Chapter 59
Mia's words made Anna freeze.
She instinctively denied it. "That's impossible."
"How is it impossible? You reunited after three years apart. That's fate." Mia rested her chin in her hands, her eyes sparkling. "If Adrian didn't always give you such a hard time, you two might actually get back together."
Anna lowered her gaze.
Fate?
This was a toxic relationship.
Adrian only had hatred in his eyes. There was no trace of their past feelings left.
She smiled bitterly. "What's over is over. There's no rekindling old flames. I was the one who broke up with him back then. He hates me too much now."
His disgusted looks and sarcastic tone always managed to hurt her.
If anyone still thought they had a chance, they must be insane.
Mia held her hand. "Anna, why did you really break up with him back then?"
She could tell Anna still had feelings for Adrian.
But Anna never spoke about it. She never offered a single explanation.
Back then, they were both busy with graduation and job hunting. They rarely talked.
Mia only remembered Anna hastily telling her they had broken up. She never said anything more.
Anna held her water glass. Her fingertips felt cold.
That year, she was the one who suggested breaking up. Adrian refused.
They had a huge fight.
His eyes were red. He gripped her wrist tightly and warned her: if she dared to break up, he would never let her go.
But...
Life never goes according to plan.
She was the one who broke his heart first. She had no right to hope for anything.
Anna forced a smile. "We just weren't right for each other. He's so outstanding. He shouldn't waste his time on someone like me."
"Nonsense!" Mia glared at her, furious. "You're beautiful and talented. You were the top student at Stanford. I always thought he wasn't good enough for you!"
Anna quickly tried to soothe her. "Okay, okay. I won't say that anymore. Don't be angry."
Mia knew these weren't her true feelings.
But if Anna didn't want to talk, no amount of questioning would help.
She ruffled Anna's hair. "Don't keep everything bottled up inside. If there's a misunderstanding, explain it. If you still love him, don't be stubborn. Follow your heart."
Anna smiled and nodded. "I know."
She leaned against Mia's shoulder. Her smile slowly faded.
A beautiful love?
She didn't deserve that anymore.
Noticing the time on her phone, Anna gasped. "It's almost eleven. I need to go wash up."
Mia hummed in response, curled up on the couch playing with her phone.
The sound of running water filled the room.
Anna closed her eyes. Her mind was filled with thoughts of Adrian.
Her reflection in the mirror looked pale.
She smiled bitterly. "Anna, wake up. There's no chance for you two. He already has a fiancรฉe."
Ice-cold water splashed onto her face.
It was bone-chillingly cold.
Only this could keep her sober.
