Chapter 395

Lucas Evans stood at the hospital room door.

He watched the two figures standing side by side inside.

His footsteps halted.

In the end, he did not push the door open.

He was too late once again.

A self-mocking smile tugged at Lucas's lips.

He turned and walked away without a word.

His assistant hurried after him.

"Mr. Evans," the assistant called out anxiously. "What should we do with these specially prepared meals?"

"Throw them away," Lucas replied coldly without looking back.

The assistant looked down at the exquisite food containers.

He couldn't help but feel it was a shame.

These were custom-ordered from a top-tier restaurant.

It seemed such a waste to discard them.

Perhaps he could ask if he could keep them for himself.

......

After two days of rest at the hospital, Anna Ross was finally discharged.

The fresh outdoor air lifted her spirits.

At least she was no longer confined to that stifling hospital room.

She raised her hand to hail a taxi.

A crisp car horn sounded beside her.

Looking up, she recognized the familiar black Maybach.

Adrian Sinclair sat inside.

He wore gold-rimmed glasses today.

His entire demeanor seemed different from usual.

Less sharp and intimidating.

More refined and gentle.

"Get in," he said flatly.

Anna didn't hesitate.

She opened the door and slid into the passenger seat.

She knew very well.

Even if she refused, he would force her into the car.

But why had he specifically come to pick her up?

Just recently he had been ice-cold toward her.

Acting as if he wanted her completely out of his sight.

Adrian glanced at her.

He started the engine. "Don't misunderstand. I'm just taking you back to work."

Anna nearly bit her tongue.

Of course she had thought too much.

There was no way he had good intentions.

"Don't worry. I wasn't thinking anything," she replied evenly.

She turned to look out the window.

A faint smile flickered in Adrian's eyes.

Her reaction was rather amusing.

The car drove smoothly.

But Anna's thoughts wandered far away.

After the engagement turmoil, she wondered what tasks Howard Lowell would assign her back at the company.

Since her transfer to the HR Department, things had been unusually quiet from Howard's side.

But this silence made her uneasy.

She felt undercurrents brewing beneath the surface.

Adrian glanced at her occasionally.

He spoke suddenly. "Where do you want to go now?"

"Aren't we going to the company?" Anna asked, confused.

He had just said he was taking her to work.

Why change his mind now?

Adrian tapped his fingers on the steering wheel.

His tone was calm. "Take the day off."

"Tomorrow, we're going abroad together."

"What!?" Anna was completely stunned.

What did he mean by suddenly going abroad?

The man took a moment to look at her.

His gaze was probing. "Are you surprised, Executive Assistant Ross?"

Did she think he was going to do something to her?

Anna gripped the seatbelt tightly.

She tried to calm her racing heart.

She needed answers first. "What's the purpose of going abroad? I'm perfectly fine here in New York. I have no plans to leave right now."

This decision was too sudden.

Everything about it felt suspicious.

Adrian studied her for a moment longer.

The corner of his mouth twitched.

He finally couldn't hold back a low chuckle.

It was as if he had heard something incredibly amusing.

Anna looked at him, puzzled.

She didn't understand what was so funny.

Was what she said really that humorous?
