Chapter 144
Adrian Sinclair agreed without hesitation.
Lydia and Harold Valentine exchanged a satisfied glance.
Lydia softened her voice further. "Since this is a meeting between families, why didn't you invite your grandpa?"
She calculated silently. If the Sinclair elder was present, they could finalize the engagement tonight.
Adrian's lips curved into a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Grandpa hasn't been feeling well lately. He's resting at home."
He saw through her intention immediately. If his grandfather were here, this dinner would turn into an engagement party.
Harold sighed with regret, then smiled again. "No matter. We'll have plenty of opportunities to meet him later. Tonight is about getting to know you. Chloe talks about you constantly."
He looked at his daughter with affection.
Chloe's cheeks flushed pink. "Dad!"
Adrian gave a faint smile but didn't respond. He swirled the wine in his glass slowly.
Harold quickly urged everyone to start eating.
Meanwhile, the bar was bathed in dim, hazy light.
Anna Ross took the stage right on time.
The crowd below surged forward. The owner said most customers came specifically for her.
Many chanted her name. "Anna Ross! Anna Ross!"
She usually interacted with the audience. Tonight, an inexplicable restlessness gripped her.
The cheers felt like needles piercing her ears.
During her break, she retreated backstage alone to drink water.
The owner entered and studied her for a moment. "Anna, you seem off tonight. Is something bothering you?"
Anna set down her water bottle and shook her head. "I'm fine."
The owner frowned slightly. Anna was her star performer. Countless customers came just to see her.
Competitors were eyeing her greedily. She couldn't afford any problems.
She patted Anna's shoulder. "If you need help, just ask. I'll do what I can."
She added, "You've been performing exceptionally well lately. I'm giving you a raise."
Anna was surprised but thanked her softly. "Thank you. I'll get myself together."
The owner left, reassured.
Anna rubbed her temples. She didn't understand her own feelings.
Her mind was filled with images of Adrian meeting Chloe's parents.
How was it going for them right now?
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to stop overthinking.
After a few more sips of water, she returned to the stage.
A few more songs, and her shift would be over.
