Chapter 375
Anna Ross shook her head gently.
"It's fine. Just get me to my destination."
The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
"Young people these days never take care of themselves."
"They always tough it out when something's wrong."
"This can't go on."
Anna lowered her gaze.
There was nothing physically wrong with her.
It was her heart that ached.
Physical pain could be treated.
But how does one heal a wounded heart?
She fell silent.
Turning her head, she looked out the window.
Winter arrived abruptly in New York.
The trees had long shed their leaves.
Only barren branches reached toward the sky.
The bleak scenery was inevitably melancholic.
Fortunately, the city's dense buildings softened this desolation.
Arriving home, she collapsed on the sofa, lost in thought.
Her phone was unusually quiet.
The usual noisy notification chimes had fallen completely silent.
Anna set her phone down.
She stared blankly at the ceiling.
They should be holding the engagement ceremony right now.
Would he be smiling with particular happiness?
As she thought, tears unconsciously slid down her cheeks.
He once said he would only love her.
Only marry her.
Only be good to her.
Now those promises were like fallen leaves scattered by the wind.
Anna sat up.
She wiped away her tears.
She didn't understand why she kept thinking about these things.
Glancing at the moving clock on the wall, she finally made a decision.
She walked into the bedroom and changed her clothes.
Picking up her bag, she prepared to go out.
She didn't want to help Howard Lowell anymore.
Since that person had found happiness, she shouldn't interfere.
She put on her shoes and was about to open the door when her phone suddenly chimed.
Anna's heart skipped a beat.
She uncontrollably picked up her phone.
She didn't know what she was expecting.
Her heart sank again when she saw the messages.
One was from Lucas Evans.
Reminding her to get ready.
He was coming to pick her up soon.
The other was from Howard Lowell.
Saying he had already started his move.
She must stall Adrian Sinclair.
He couldn't attend the engagement party.
Anna bit her lip.
She tapped on Lucas's message to reply.
After finishing, she put on her shoes and pushed the door open.
Days grew shorter after winter began.
It was already dark outside.
The motion-sensor light happened to be broken.
The hallway was pitch black.
She took out her phone to use as a flashlight.
Suddenly, something fell to the ground behind her.
"Who's there?" She spun around.
She couldn't see anything in the darkness.
But the sound was unmistakable.
It was like someone rummaging through things.
Accidentally knocking other items over.
She held her breath, listening intently.
But there was no further sound around her.
Anna shook her head.
She thought she was being too sensitive.
Residents in this building returned late.
There really weren't many people around at this time.
She turned on her flashlight.
The light dispelled the darkness.
She instinctively shone it toward where the sound had come from.
It was still empty. No one was there.
