Chapter 155
Anna Ross suppressed the shame churning inside her.
Her voice was cold and clear. "I want to help Howard Lowell. Please stop the investigation."
Her fingers clenched tightly.
Her nails dug deep into her palms.
The pain came, but she was already numb.
Adrian Sinclair let out a derisive laugh.
He shot her an incredulous glance. "For him? You'd go this far?" He turned his head away, his jawline tense.
Anna remained silent, her gaze unwavering.
"He's never been good to you," Adrian's voice was laced with suppressed anger. "Is it worth it?" He found it bitterly ironic. He had used every means to tempt her, and she never yielded. Yet now she was lowering her head for the man who hurt her.
How laughable.
Why was she doing this?
Seeing his slightly raised brow, Anna's heart trembled.
She just wanted to hide herself away, wrapped up tightly like a cocoon.
But she couldn't.
Once dignity is discarded, it can never be reclaimed.
"Does what you said still count?" Her eyes were dim, losing their luster in the night. "Or do you want to go back on your word?"
Adrian's voice rose. "Tell me, why?" Helping that kind of person was simply not worth it.
Why?
Anna was stunned. She didn't want to either, but she had no choice. "He's my stepfather. It's only right that I help him. I agree to be your mistress, as long as you let him go."
Adrian laughed at himself mockingly. "But I don't want that anymore." He fought back his anger, watching her degrade herself for that man. It made his chest feel tight and uncomfortable.
If it were someone else, would she do the same?
The surroundings were silent, with only the faint chirping of insects in the grass.
The two stood in a stalemate.
Anna loosened her clenched hands and stepped forward lightly.
She reached out and wrapped her arms around him.
"Please," her voice choked with sobs. "I'll do anything you want. Just please let him go."
Adrian frowned deeply, looking down at the pleading figure in his arms, his face dark.
He didn't react.
Anna closed her eyes, stood on her toes, and kissed his lips.
A tear slid down from the corner of her eye.
His lips were still cold.
These were things he had once forced upon her.
Now she was doing themไธปๅจly. Would he agree?
Adrian's pupils constricted sharply.
He pushed her away forcefully.
Looking at the stranger before him, his heart ached with a sharp pain.
If it was only for Howard Lowell, she didn't need to go this far.
"Enough," he said coldly, and turned to leave.
Anna staggered from the push.
She couldn't let him leave.
This was her only chance.
