Chapter 384
Anna Ross caught a glimpse of a figure moving outside the door.
The silhouette felt strangely familiar.
Her chest tightened. Her jaw clenched instinctively.
Adrian Sinclair let out a low hum.
His fingers pressed gently against her cheeks, applying slight pressure.
Her lips parted involuntarily.
His breath swept in, overwhelming and all-encompassing.
Tears welled in the corners of her eyes.
The hand that should have pushed him away instead slowly rose to his shoulder.
This kiss had been too long in coming.
She found herself craving it.
When she saw the video during the day, shock was not her only reaction.
More than that, there was an irrepressible joy.
She knew she shouldn't feel this way.
But her heart had already stopped listening to reason.
Her fingers lightly wrapped around his neck.
Adrian carefully avoided her injury, bending down to meet her.
Outside the door.
Lucas Evans leaned against the cold wall.
The scene he witnessed when he pushed the door open had frozen him in place.
She almost noticed him.
He lowered his head with a bitter smile.
Had he arrived too late after all?
His fist clenched, then relaxed.
Self-mockery filled his eyes.
He had just sent people to deal with the thugs harassing her.
He rushed over, only to walk in on this.
The hospital room door suddenly opened.
Adrian stepped out, a faint smile touching his eyes.
His brow lifted slightly when he saw Lucas. "Aren't you going in, Mr. Evans?"
Lucas's jaw tightened. He forced composure and entered the room.
Adrian moved aside, the curve of his lips deepening.
It was time to make his exit.
Anna was not surprised to see who entered.
She softly invited him to sit.
"Anna, does it still hurt?" Lucas's fingers tightened. "I was delayed by an accident on the road. I'm late."
If he hadn't been tied up with that dispute.
He would never have given Adrian this opportunity.
Anna shook her head. "It's fine. Thank you."
Lucas's back stiffened. "Why are you thanking me?"
He had failed to prevent anything.
This gratitude cut like a knife.
Her smile faded. "Lucas, you're a good man."
"But don't waste your time on me."
He was silent for a moment, then suddenly laughed. "You're overthinking it."
"Right now, I'm just caring for you as a friend."
"You won't even let me be your friend, will you?"
Seeing her hesitant look, he shrugged and added, "My family has set up quite a few blind dates for me."
"I might be off the market soon."
"You really don't need to feel pressured."
