Chapter 339
Anna Ross walked quickly out of the office.
Adrian Sinclair stared at the figure moving outside the door.
He watched for a long time.
So long that Chloe Valentine had already opened the cake and placed it before him.
She called his name several times.
He didn't respond.
Chloe felt a surge of irritation.
She raised her voice. "Adrian, what are you thinking about?"
Adrian snapped back to attention.
He glanced down at the gaudy cake on the desk.
His eyes were cold.
After a long pause.
He turned away.
He said flatly, "I don't like sweets. You have it."
Chloe wanted to say more.
But the man's attention had already returned to his computer.
He was busy working.
He didn't speak to her again.
"Alright, I'll let you work then."
She added unwillingly.
"I'll come find you later."
Adrian didn't respond.
Maybe he didn't hear.
Or maybe he was ignoring her on purpose.
He just stared at the screen.
His fingers tapped across the keyboard.
Chloe suppressed her impatience.
She didn't want to anger him.
She had no choice but to take the cake and leave.
Just outside the office door.
She saw Anna packing her things.
Chloe was in a bad mood.
She needed an outlet for her frustration.
She walked to the trash can.
She threw the cake inside.
Then she approached Anna.
She sneered, "Where are you going, Executive Assistant Ross?"
"Didn't Adrian say he wouldn't let you leave?"
Anna ignored her.
She kept her head down, packing her things.
Finally.
She glanced at the employee ID card in the drawer.
She gently closed the drawer.
Chloe felt like she had punched cotton.
It made her even more upset.
Her eyes shifted.
She leaned against the desk and lowered her voice.
"Executive Assistant Ross, don't go too far."
"Remember to come to our engagement party."
Anna finally looked up.
She stared at Chloe in a daze.
Chloe flashed a victorious smile.
She turned and walked away quickly.
Anna looked toward the closed office door.
A wave of sadness washed over her.
So he was getting married.
No wonder he said those things earlier.
It made sense.
He was always going to marry someone else.
It was just a matter of time.
Hadn't she always known this?
So why did her heart hurt so much?
Anna carried her meager belongings to the HR Department.
Howard Lowell excitedly pulled her into his office.
He looked around the spacious room.
His face beamed with delight.
"Anna, see this?"
"This is where I'll achieve my ambitions step by step."
"I'll turn the entire Lowell Group into mine."
Anna wasn't interested.
She simply said, "Oh."
Howard finally noticed the things in her hands.
A bad feeling rose within him.
He lowered his voice and asked, "Did you get fired?"
Anna shook her head.
She said softly, "Is there anything else you need to say?"
"If not, I'm going to put my things away."
"Wait." Howard stopped her.
He studied her for a moment.
Then he asked, "You're going to work under me now?"
Anna nodded.
Howard took a deep breath.
He walked around her toward the floor-to-ceiling window.
He stared outside for a long time.
Finally, he asked, "Was this Adrian's idea?"
"Does he already know something?"
He seemed to be asking Anna.
But it also sounded like he was talking to himself.
