Chapter 220
Anna Ross took a long moment to catch her breath.
The coughing fit had left her dizzy and disoriented.
She leaned back against the sofa, resting until she felt better.
"Sophia, I really want to help you."
"But it wouldn't be appropriate for me, an outsider, to join your meeting with your mother." Her voice was hoarse from coughing.
Sophia Roscente waved her hands urgently.
"No, it's fine!"
"My mother is very easygoing with people."
"You don't need to feel any pressure at all."
"She's only strict with me."
"This time I made a mistake."
"I'm truly too scared to face her alone."
"That's why I wanted you to come with me."
Her eyelashes fluttered slightly.
Casting faint shadows beneath her eyes.
Anna felt conflicted.
She had never met Sophia's mother before.
Showing up so suddenly would be rude.
Besides, when a mother and daughter talked.
Her presence would undoubtedly feel intrusive.
With that thought, she took the other's hand.
"Sophia, I have work tomorrow."
"I probably can't go."
Seeing her refusal.
Sophia pulled her hand back and wiped nonexistent tears.
She sighed pitifully.
"Sister, if you don't go with me."
"You might never see me again."
"Would you really let such a cute sister like me disappear?"
"Is it really that serious?" Anna frowned.
Though reluctant.
She began to waver.
If she were the one feeling nervous.
She would also want someone by her side.
Sophia cried even louder.
Rolling back and forth on the sofa.
"If it weren't serious, why would I beg you?"
"I think of you as my own sister."
"But you won't save me."
"My heart is breaking..."
Anna sighed helplessly.
She reached out and patted her.
"Alright, I'll go with you."
"Stop crying."
Those words worked like magic.
The person on the sofa instantly sat up.
Happily throwing herself into a hug.
"Sister, you're the best!"
"You're the greatest sister in the whole world!" She hugged her excitedly.
Almost planting a kiss on her.
Anna's eye twitched slightly.
She had a feeling she'd been tricked again.
Sophia held onto her tightly.
The two sat together watching TV for a while.
Anna suddenly remembered she hadn't asked for time off.
She returned to her room and picked up her phone.
She hesitated about calling.
Finally deciding to send a text instead.
Her fingers tapped out a few words.
She had just put down the phone to wash up.
When a message notification sounded immediately.
She opened it to look.
The other party had agreed without asking any questions.
Staring at the simple "Okay" on the chat screen.
She remained motionless for a long time.
Just gazing blankly at that word.
Earlier in the car.
The expectation in his eyes when he asked that question.
Later replaced by dim disappointment.
And loss.
She gripped her phone tightly.
Her nails making faint scratching sounds on the back.
It was like overturning a bottle filled with sorrow.
Her heart flooded with aching bitterness.
She had failed him.
But what good would telling the truth do?
The two of them.
Had long passed the point of no return.
