Chapter 0091

Alexander

The bastard had slaughtered eight of my men.

Each one had a family.

Some were older, with children waiting at home.

Some were young, fresh from training, eager to prove their worth as warriors.

It should have been a simple mission: protect my mate.

None of us saw it coming.

Thatโ€™s the danger of shifting under a full moon.

We are at our peak strength, yet consumed by the hunt.

Everything else fadesโ€”everything but the prey.

I watch her now.

She turns her hand over slowly.

Her wide blue eyes trace the faint marks, puzzling over where the claws emerged and vanished.

I feel a surge of frustration.

Yes, she defended herself.

Thatโ€™s what I wanted from the start.

But this nagging feeling wonโ€™t leave me.

And sheโ€ฆ she doesnโ€™t seem disturbed.

Isabella confirmed the men had been dead for hours.

Athenaโ€™s blue-tinged toes showed sheโ€™d been out in the cold too long.

Maybe sheโ€™s made peace with it.

Maybe Nyx guided her through it.

But her calm is unusual for a first kill.

'The bodies are handled,' Theodore links me. 'Sebastian checked on all the children and elders. No one was harmed. Only the guards at the house were targeted.โ€™

'My office. Both of you. Ten minutes,โ€™ I command.

Athena rubs her feet with the blanket, seeking warmth.

โ€œWhat triggered Nyxโ€™s emergence?โ€ I ask.

โ€œMy period,โ€ she answers instantly, without a hint of hesitation. โ€œShe said it was necessary. She should have appeared when I turned thirteen, but my body was too weak. I never fully matured.โ€

She pushes tangled hair from her face.

I grab her brush from the cabinet and hand it to her.

She works through the knots, smoothing her dark hair.

She sighs, dropping the brush beside her.

She adjusts the blanket, wrapping it tightly around herself.

โ€œI know youโ€™re angry, Alpha Alexander.โ€

โ€œNot at you.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ she murmurs.

She opens her mouth to speak again, but hesitates and closes it.

'Sheโ€™s talking to Nyx,โ€™ Titan murmurs. 'Look at her eyes.โ€™

'I noticed,โ€™ I reply.

But as I focus, I see something newโ€”a dark ring circling the blue of her irises.

โ€œAthena?โ€

Her eyes snap up to mine.

The ring vanishes.

โ€œCome with me.โ€

โ€œWhere? Am I in trouble?โ€

โ€œJust to the office. Iโ€™d leave you here, but I donโ€™t want you alone right now.โ€

She follows me through the house, blanket clutched tightly.

She settles into her usual chair, pulling her knees to her chest, hiding beneath the fabric.

Theodore and Sebastian enter, mid-argument.

โ€œWe all fell for it,โ€ Theodore snaps. โ€œAnd from what I heard, you were meeting him nightly.โ€

They stop when they see Athena.

Sebastian crosses his arms.

Theodore studies her curiously.

โ€œEnough,โ€ I growl. โ€œHe fooled us all. Maintained this charade for months.โ€

โ€œThen why help me kill Lycans if it was a setup?โ€ Sebastian scowls.

โ€œTo maintain his cover. He had to make us believe he was loyalโ€”that he was on Athenaโ€™s side. Otherwise, he wouldโ€™ve been caught sooner.โ€

โ€œHe said he was calling Dominic,โ€ Athena whispers. โ€œThat he needed to tell them I was ready for collection. The devoted brotherโ€ฆ it was all lies.โ€

Her voice is flat, devoid of emotion.

โ€œHe deserved it,โ€ she murmurs, not meeting our eyes.

That subtle darkness surfaces again.

โ€œYou killed him?โ€ Theodore asks, surprised.

โ€œI did. I tore pieces of his heart out. Then I pushed him over the edge,โ€ she states, unapologetic.

โ€œYou?โ€ Sebastian is stunned.

I understand why.

She seems small. Fragile.

You wouldnโ€™t expect it from her.

But they donโ€™t see the darkness simmering beneath the surface like I do.

โ€œI donโ€™t get it,โ€ Theodore mutters. โ€œHe looked just like you. Same dark hair. Same blue eyes. Even your smiles were similar.โ€

That last comment strikes me as odd.

Is he interested in my mate?

โ€œIt was all a setup!โ€ I snap, drawing their attention back. โ€œAnd we fell for something this obvious.โ€

Like Athena said, Iโ€™m not angry with her.

Iโ€™m furious with myself.

Iโ€™ve seen every trick.

Heard every scheme.

Yet I still fell for it.

'You shouldโ€™ve trusted my instincts,โ€™ Titan grumbles.

Heโ€™s right.

I should have.

I messed up.

I lost good men tonight.

But she is still here.

She is still alive.

My fist slams onto the desk.

The men jump.

But Athena just watches me.

Itโ€™s the longest sheโ€™s held eye contact with anyone.

โ€œIโ€™m recalling Julian.โ€

Both men raise their eyebrows.

Neither speaks.

Athenaโ€™s gaze remains fixed on me.

โ€œI know what youโ€™re thinking. I exiled him. But you both know heโ€™s a master strategist. He wouldโ€™ve seen this coming. This is his expertise. And we need it.โ€

I have ultimate control.

My pack trusts me.

But we all have our strengths.

And right now, we need his.

I look at Athena. โ€œHe wonโ€™t come near you.โ€

I meant to be reassuring.

It came out as an order.

She nods.

โ€œNyx said sheโ€™ll kill him if he tries anything,โ€ she says flatly.

Both men stare at her, eyebrows raised.

โ€œWho the hell is Nyx?โ€ Sebastian demands.

โ€œNyx,โ€ I mutter, โ€œis Athenaโ€™s Lycan.โ€

โ€œNo. Caleb said that wasnโ€™t possible,โ€ he sputters.

โ€œCaleb also fed us a lot of lies. All that crap about Athena not remembering himโ€”it makes sense now. There was nothing to remember. He didnโ€™t exist!โ€ I shout.

Whatever issue Sebastian had with that guy, he needs to let it go.

Caleb screwed us.

Thatโ€™s the end of it.
