Chapter 0019

Athena

I dropped to the floor instantly.

What in the world was that thing?

My body refused to look again.

A sudden knock on the door made me jump.

โ€œAthena. Itโ€™s me. You can open up.โ€ Alpha Alexanderโ€™s voice came from the hallway.

I stayed silent, staring at the door as the handle jiggled.

I didn't want to move.

I didn't want to leave my corner.

Thank goddess for the bolt lock.

โ€œAthena, I know you saw. The creature has been handled. It's dead. There's no reason to be afraid.โ€

Pushing up from the floor, I glanced out the window.

All the Wolves were gone.

So was the monster.

I began moving chairs out of the way.

Slowly, I slid the lock back.

Alexander pushed through the gap.

He forced the remaining chairs aside effortlessly.

His crimson eyes scanned the office.

He didnโ€™t mention the barricade.

I was starting to understandโ€”those chairs were like pillows to him.

Heโ€™d pulled on a pair of grey shorts after shifting back.

They hung low on his hips, accentuating every muscle.

I looked away, heat rushing to my cheeks.

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ what was that?โ€ I muttered, desperate to change the subject.

โ€œWe donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œYโ€”you donโ€™t?โ€ It shocked me that Alpha Alexander didnโ€™t have an answer.

He shook his head. โ€œIโ€™ve seen many things. Nothing like that.โ€

โ€œYou killed it?โ€

โ€œIt attacked pack members. We had no choice.โ€

โ€œIt had a headโ€ฆ like a Wolf,โ€ I mumbled.

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œBut the bodyโ€ฆ it looked almost human. Except for the hair. The size.โ€

โ€œI know. But itโ€™s over. You donโ€™t need to worry.โ€

Not worry? That thing would haunt my thoughts until it had a name.

But I could tell he was done discussing it.

โ€œMoonshine will have to wait,โ€ he said, repositioning the chairs.

โ€œDid you really think these would stop someone?โ€

I shrugged. At that moment, yes, I really did.

โ€œIt might be time to enroll you in training.โ€

โ€œTraining?โ€

โ€œMost kids learn combat in school. You didnโ€™t. Iโ€™d feel better if you could defend yourself.โ€

โ€œYou want me to train with the pack?โ€

He turned to face me. โ€œNot with the pack. Not yet. Their senses are sharper. Theyโ€™re faster. It wouldnโ€™t be fair. Youโ€™ll train with me.โ€

โ€œWith you?โ€ I stammered. He was a powerful Alpha. I stood no chance.

โ€œI have better control than anyone here. If you land a hit, I wonโ€™t retaliate.โ€

My stomach twisted.

Iโ€™d spent years flinching at raised hands.

How did he expect to train me?

โ€œNow?โ€ I asked.

โ€œIn a few days. I want that scar fully healed first. I wonโ€™t send you back to the hospital.โ€

My hand drifted to my stomach, feeling the raised line beneath the fabric.

โ€œDoes it hurt?โ€ He was watching me closely.
