Chapter 0281

โ€˜Silverwood.โ€™ Titan murmurs. โ€˜That name rings a bell.โ€™

โ€˜There was a pack named Silverwood decades ago. Far south. Long before my time. They were completely destroyed.โ€™ My Alpha training included studying fallen packs.

Silverwood wasnโ€™t eliminated by war. It was a natural catastrophe. Massive floods triggered a devastating landslide. My father said they were either drowned or buried alive. Our healing abilities mean nothing against such raw, destructive force.

โ€œSilverwood was a Wolf pack.โ€ I mutter to Lucas with a frown.

He smirks and shakes his head.

โ€œLycans?โ€

He takes another drink of beer and nods. โ€œMany packs pretended to be Wolves. Easier to hide their true nature. Wolves canโ€™t tell the difference, as you well know.โ€

Silver Creek had done exactly that. They made Athena believe she was a Wolf her entire life.

โ€œYouโ€™ve eliminated packs?โ€ I press.

โ€œI eliminate Rogues. My ancestors wiped out packs. I chose to focus on the real threats.โ€

โ€œAre you claiming Seraphina is from this Silverwood pack? Thatโ€™s impossible.โ€

He grins. โ€œMy grandparents blew up a dam near their territory. Made it look like a structural failure. Thenโ€ฆ everything was just gone.โ€

It was brutally efficient. One act erasing an entire pack. It made me wonder how many Lycan packs Iโ€™d unknowingly encountered.

โ€œYou think Seraphinaโ€™s mother escaped?โ€

โ€œPerhaps. Or she wasnโ€™t there when it happened.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why Seraphina came for your family when she was old enough. Revenge.โ€

โ€œIn my line of work, every action has consequences. My grandparents should have ensured no survivors. Their mistake became my problem to solve.โ€

โ€œBut why take Charlotte from you? What was the point?โ€

โ€œYou can mourn a death. You never recover from knowing your child is alive somewhere out there. You always wonder if they remember you. If they ever think of you.โ€

I couldnโ€™t imagine that pain. If someone tried taking one of my boys, nowhere would be safe for them. I would hunt them to the ends of the earth.

โ€œBrianna had an encounter with Seraphina.โ€

โ€œI heard.โ€

โ€œSeraphina mentioned a pack. Said she was trained before going Rogue. She caught herself and reacted violently. If Silverwood was destroyed, which pack was she referring to?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I havenโ€™t figured out. Several Lycan packs remain in this country. Others moved overseas when Wolf numbers increased. Iโ€™ve watched them. Never seen her with any. I considered she might be deceiving Wolves into believing sheโ€™s one of them.โ€

It wasnโ€™t a far-fetched idea.

โ€œDid you know about Silver Creek?โ€ I challenge.

He looks directly at me. โ€œNo. Not at the time youโ€™re referring to. They were recorded as wiped out.โ€ He sees my annoyed expression. โ€œBeing a Hunter doesnโ€™t grant omniscience. I can tell the difference. I can smell their distinct scent. Training and knowledge are passed down. We record pack information. I assure you, thereโ€™s only one record for a Silver Creek pack. It says deceased.โ€

He taps his empty bottle on the table. โ€œWhy did you accept her? Even after learning what she was, you let her stay. Let her thrive.โ€

โ€œI searched for my mate for years. When I found her, I knew I could never let her go.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s a Lycan.โ€ He stares intently with his hazel eyes.

โ€œSometimes the heart doesnโ€™t care about origins.โ€

โ€œDid you pity her? You did save her from a horrific situation.โ€

โ€œShe told you about that?โ€ I ask, surprised. She rarely volunteers that information. Details slip out occasionally, but she mostly keeps it buried.

โ€œShe didnโ€™t need to tell me. I see it in her soul.โ€
