Chapter 0231

He takes the keys from my grasp. โ€œIโ€™m driving.โ€

I donโ€™t argue. I let him have them.

While I slide into my wedges, he asks where weโ€™re headed.

โ€œJust drive,โ€ I murmur, following him outside.

He stays silent as he navigates the back roads. He gives me space. Lets my mind race.

Heโ€™s waiting for me to speak.

I donโ€™t know how far weโ€™ve gone when he pulls over beneath some trees. The sun is beginning to rise in the distance.

โ€œKeep driving.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been driving for hours. Weโ€™ll need gas soon.โ€ His voice is low.

Itโ€™s time. I have to tell him.

โ€œAll my life, Iโ€™ve been searching for my half-sister. Trying to fix what was broken. What happened to me and my mother. She was impossible to find. Until recently. All I had was a name. When our kind hides in the shadows, do you have any idea how difficult that is?โ€

He stays quiet. His eyes donโ€™t leave me.

โ€œI discovered I had a talent for killing when I was a teenager. I was damn good at it. It felt natural. People paid me to solve their problems. It was a convenient way to make money while doing what I loved. Do you know how rare that is? Of course you donโ€™t. Iโ€™m sure big brother gave you everything you ever wanted.โ€

It was a cheap shot. I knew it. The anger was talking.

โ€œDid Zachary ever seem evil to you?โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œHonestly, I didnโ€™t know him that well.โ€

โ€œShifting and killingโ€ฆ it does something to Lycans.โ€ I shake my head. โ€œIt turns us into worse monsters than we already are. Sometimes, you canโ€™t stop it.โ€ I let out a heavy breath. Iโ€™ve never told anyone that. Itโ€™s exhausting just thinking about it.

โ€œYou came back from that,โ€ he says, his dark eyes holding mine.

โ€œAnd one day, I might lose that fight all over again.โ€ He deserves the truth now that heโ€™s hearing my secrets.

โ€œHow long has it been?โ€

โ€œFour years.โ€

โ€œAnd you still think it could happen again?โ€

I nod, watching the sun climb over the hills.

โ€œWhy?โ€

My eyes snap to his. โ€œWhat do you mean, โ€˜whyโ€™?โ€

โ€œWhy would you go back? If you donโ€™t want that life, just donโ€™t go back.โ€

โ€œIf only it were that simple. The best way I can explain it isโ€ฆ it has a grip on you. Lycans werenโ€™t meant to live like humans. Or even like Wolves. We were designed to control the population.โ€

โ€œHuman numbers keep growing. Theyโ€™re slowly destroying the world. So weโ€ฆ thin them out. But some Rogues take it too far.โ€ I add.

โ€œYouโ€™re talking about that town. Where Gabriel was from.โ€

I nod. โ€œThey should have moved on. Their mistake.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve never talked about this, have you? Youโ€™ve kept it bottled up for years.โ€

โ€œIf you havenโ€™t noticed, I donโ€™t exactly have friends.โ€

He pulls the lever and slides his seat back. He reaches over and unclips my belt. In one motion, he pulls me onto his lap. His hands frame my face, drawing me close.

โ€œYou have me.โ€

His lips crash into mine. Rough. Urgent. His tongue demands entry.

I gave him the worst parts of me. And he didnโ€™t flinch. He didnโ€™t pull away. He let me pour it all out without pushing for more.

I twist my body, straddling his thighs. My arms lock around his neck. I kiss him back with the same ferocity.

He understands me more than anyone ever has. Iโ€™ve let him in deeper than anyone else.

I break the kiss. My chest heaves as I stare at him. Maybe he is my salvation.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I whisper. I tilt my head back, offering my neck. โ€œDo it.โ€
