Chapter 0137

Athena

โ€œAre you absolutely certain I canโ€™t assist with anything?โ€ I ask Isabella, my voice tight with frustration. โ€œSitting here idle is driving me insane.โ€

โ€œNo. You need to remain exactly where you are. Sebastian has everything under control.โ€ She hands me a glass of orange juice and settles onto the bed beside me. โ€œAny word from Alexander?โ€

I shake my head slowly. This was the longest stretch of time we had gone without speaking. It felt profoundly strange. I knew he was safe now. I could sense it through our bond, but that knowledge did nothing to quiet my restless thoughts.

โ€˜Iโ€™m positive everything is fine. Who knows? He might even make it back for the celebration.โ€ Isabella offers the words with a hopeful tone.

โ€œSebastian already said thatโ€™s highly improbable. And we still have no strategy for dealing with Ethan.โ€

โ€œStop worrying about that. Sebastian and Theodore will handle it.โ€

I groan softly, taking a sip of the juice just as a sharp knock echoes from the door.

โ€œEnter!โ€ Isabella calls out.

Sebastian steps into the room, his gaze lowered. โ€œAlexander is on his way back.โ€

โ€œHe found Sophia?โ€ I blurt out, thrusting the glass toward Isabella.

โ€œYes. She is unharmed. She is secure.โ€

โ€œWhy does it feel like youโ€™re withholding information, Sebastian?โ€ Isabella fixes him with an intense stare. โ€œIโ€™ve known you my whole life. I can always tell when thereโ€™s more you arenโ€™t saying. Julian is fine, Alexander is fine, and you just confirmed Sophia is safe. So what is it?โ€

His eyes shift to me. โ€œYou must remain calm.โ€

Isabella scrambles off the bed and shoves him hard in the arm. โ€œAre you serious? You should know by now that telling a woman to stay calm has the exact opposite effect!โ€

He releases a heavy sigh. โ€œAlexander is bringing Brianna here.โ€

My heart seemed to freeze solid in my chest. โ€œWhyโ€ฆ Why would he do that? You told him. You told him what she did to me. You said he verified it was the same woman. That she bore the same scar.โ€

โ€œAthena, breathe!โ€ Isabella urges as I slide from the bed and begin to pace the room.

โ€œHeโ€™s bringing her here?!โ€ My voice cracks, threatening tears.

Let me think! Nyx snaps, her agitation mirroring my own. โ€˜Perhapsโ€ฆ perhaps he is bringing her here so we can end her.โ€™

โ€œAthena, talk to me.โ€ Isabella pleads.

Maybe he wants you to have closure.โ€™ Nyx suggests.

A wave of nausea washed over me. Since hearing that name, the memory of what she had done had unlocked completely. Now, just like the bloody images of my parents, it replayed on a relentless loop in my mind. The searing pain, the sickening crack of my skull, my desperate pleas fading into nothingness before the darkness consumed me.

โ€œAthena!โ€ Isabella calls my name again, more forcefully.

โ€œShe cannot come here.โ€ I whisper, my voice trembling.

โ€œOkay. But please, get back into bed.โ€ She turns her furious glare back to Sebastian. โ€œWhy in the goddessโ€™s name would he bring her here?โ€

โ€œHe said he would explain everything upon his arrival.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€ I mutter, moving numbly as Isabella guides me. โ€œHe always swore he would kill anyone who ever hurt me. And nowโ€ฆ heโ€™s bringing her here. To my home. Iโ€™m pregnant!โ€

โ€œAnd that is precisely why you need to rest. We will handle this.โ€ She grinds her teeth, her eyes burning into Sebastian. โ€œWonโ€™t we!โ€

โ€œWithout question, you and the heirs are our top priority.โ€ Sebastian states firmly.

I feel my stomach lurch violently. I knew what was coming and barely managed to stumble into the adjoining bathroom.

โ€œJust go and keep watch on Ethan.โ€ Isabella snaps at Sebastian as she follows to rub my back.

โ€œThis is a joke, right?โ€ I gasp out when she helps me back to the bed.

โ€œAlexander always has his reasons. Iโ€™m certain he wouldnโ€™t do anything that would intentionally endanger you. Focus on the positives. Sophia is safe. Alexander and Julian are bringing her home. No matter what has been thrown at you, you have always found a way to rise above it. If you have to kill her, then kill her.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right. I need to keep my pups safe.โ€

She nods and turns on the television. โ€œNow, can we please watch this film Iโ€™ve been telling you about?โ€

โ€œWhy are we still proceeding with this?โ€ I mutter as Isabella carefully walks with me toward the training grounds.

Music had been blaring for most of the afternoon. The entire pack already seemed to be in a festive mood, even though the celebration wasn't scheduled to start until sunset.

โ€œAs Iโ€™ve said, the pack needs this. It was Alexanderโ€™s idea. It kept Ethan here a little longer and it gave my brothers the chance to locate Sophia.โ€

And bring that bitch here.โ€™ Nyx growls low in my mind.

โ€œLadies!โ€ Ethanโ€™s voice comes from behind us. Did he hear Isabella? โ€œHow are you feeling, Athena?โ€

โ€œExhausted.โ€ I reply flatly. He was still playing the charming guest.

โ€œIt must be difficult carrying twin Lycans.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t yet know if they are Lycans!โ€ Isabella tells him sharply.

โ€œRight. Yes, Athena did mention that. Out of curiosity, when will you find out?โ€

โ€œNot for several months.โ€ Isabella declares.

His dark grey eyes linger on me. โ€œSeveral months is a considerable amount of time.โ€

โ€œThere is nothing I can do to change that!โ€ I snap at him. Knowing what he had planned for Sophia made my blood boil. But his excessive interest was solely focused on the twins. More specifically, my unborn children.

โ€œHey, there you are!โ€ Theodore jogs toward us. โ€œHappy Birthday.โ€

โ€œI was under the impression this was a celebration for winning the war.โ€ Ethan states.

โ€œIt is, but we also celebrate our pack leaderโ€™s birthday. Itโ€™s a joint celebration.โ€ Theodore informs him.

โ€œNo one mentioned it was your birthday.โ€ Ethan grins at me. โ€œHappy birthday, Athena.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not an occasion I typically celebrate.โ€ I mutter.

He watches me intently as Isabella and Theodore converse. He doesnโ€™t utter another word, and a cold shiver traces its way down my spine. Sophia was a distraction. It was the twins he truly wanted. I could feel it deep in my bones. That was the real reason he was still here.

โ€œCome on, Ethan.โ€ Theodore calls out. โ€œCome tell me about Crestwood city. Iโ€™ve always been curious what it was like for your kind. Do you still conduct pack runs?โ€

I release a breath I didnโ€™t realize I was holding as Ethan follows Theodore, answering his rapid-fire questions.

โ€œHis brother is dead, correct?โ€ I ask Isabella quietly.

โ€œThatโ€™s what Alexander told Sebastian.โ€

โ€œHe hasnโ€™t said a word about it. Not a single word. He would feel it, right? He would know his brother was killed.โ€

โ€œPossibly. The bond is different when they belong to separate packs. Thereโ€™s a chance he felt something. But thereโ€™s an equally strong chance he felt nothing at all. Why?โ€

โ€œI believe it was a setup.โ€ My eyes dart around to ensure we are alone. โ€œHe hasnโ€™t mentioned his brother once. And his questionsโ€ฆ He is utterly desperate to know if the twins are Lycans.โ€
