Chapter 0356

Athena

โ€œWeโ€™re leaving.โ€ Lucโ€™s hand closes around my arm, pulling me away like Iโ€™m nothing but dead weight slowing him down.

I wrench my arm back, prying his fingers off my skin. โ€œLet go of me. Iโ€™m not done here.โ€

His voice drops, cold and sharp. โ€œIf we donโ€™t move now, Iโ€™ll put a bullet in that blondeโ€™s skull.โ€

'It was bound to happen sooner or later.' Nyx murmurs inside my head.

โ€œBecause you didnโ€™t like what she was saying?โ€ I hiss as he shoves me toward the passenger side.

โ€œNo.โ€ His whisper is barely audible. โ€œI want whoeverโ€™s watching to hear me say it.โ€

I almost turn my head. Right before we knocked, Iโ€™d felt eyes on usโ€”but there were no foreign scents, no movement in the shadows.

โ€œEyes on me, Athena. They canโ€™t know we see them. Look around, and youโ€™ll give us away.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t smell anything,โ€ I mutter. Nyx echoes the thought.

โ€œWeโ€™re not meant to. Theyโ€™re masking. Thatโ€™s why I canโ€™t pinpoint them. Could be more than one.โ€ His voice is low, urgent. โ€œWeโ€™re heading back to Obsidian Howl. If they follow, thatโ€™s on them. I made a vow to keep you safe. Now buckle up.โ€

He slams the door, nearly catching my fingers. I curse under my breath as I yank the seatbelt across my chest.

โ€œYou think itโ€™s that Levi guy?โ€ I ask as he speeds away from Seraphinaโ€™s house.

โ€œNot sure. Even if he masks his scent, I shouldโ€™ve caught Hannahโ€™s. She wasnโ€™t there.โ€

โ€œMaybe they were watching them, not us.โ€

โ€œUs.โ€ His tone leaves no room for doubt. The car accelerates. My knuckles turn white where I grip the belt.

โ€œHow can you be so sure?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a car on our tail. Has been since we left.โ€

I glance back. A silver sedan falls behind, then slows to a crawl before pulling onto the grass as we round the bend. 'They know we made them.' Nyx growls.

โ€œLycans or Wolves?โ€ I ask.

โ€œLycans, I think.โ€

โ€œYou think?โ€

โ€œMasked scent makes it hard. Could be Wolves. Not sticking around to find out.โ€

โ€œIs masking scents easy?โ€

โ€œNo. Itโ€™s difficult. Deliberate.โ€

I study his profile. Thereโ€™s so much I donโ€™t know about him. He only shares fragments, and only when he wants to. You canโ€™t force anything out of a Wolf like him.

I check behind us again. The road is empty. โ€œTheyโ€™re gone.โ€

Luc nods but doesnโ€™t slow down. We nearly sideswipe an oncoming car. Finally, he eases off the gas, and we roll to a stop. I release a shaky breath. Cars still make me nervous.

โ€œYouโ€™re worried about Hannah. Weโ€™ll find her,โ€ I say, hoping it comforts him.

He glances at me, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, a smile forms. โ€œYouโ€™re right. We will.โ€

Just as the car starts moving again, something slams into us from behind.

The seatbelt locks, crushing the air from my lungs. My organs lurch forward. I taste bile.

Sharp, burning pain tears through my chest and stomach where the belt digs in.

I look toward Luc.

He isnโ€™t in his seat.

His body is half through the shattered windshield. Shards of glass pierce his skin. Blood sprays from multiple wounds.

'Athena, donโ€™t move.' Nyxโ€™s voice is dazed, disoriented.

โ€œI have to help him,โ€ I whisper, fumbling for the belt clasp.
