Chapter 0356
Athena
โWeโre leaving.โ Lucโs hand closes around my arm, pulling me away like Iโm nothing but dead weight slowing him down.
I wrench my arm back, prying his fingers off my skin. โLet go of me. Iโm not done here.โ
His voice drops, cold and sharp. โIf we donโt move now, Iโll put a bullet in that blondeโs skull.โ
'It was bound to happen sooner or later.' Nyx murmurs inside my head.
โBecause you didnโt like what she was saying?โ I hiss as he shoves me toward the passenger side.
โNo.โ His whisper is barely audible. โI want whoeverโs watching to hear me say it.โ
I almost turn my head. Right before we knocked, Iโd felt eyes on usโbut there were no foreign scents, no movement in the shadows.
โEyes on me, Athena. They canโt know we see them. Look around, and youโll give us away.โ
โI donโt smell anything,โ I mutter. Nyx echoes the thought.
โWeโre not meant to. Theyโre masking. Thatโs why I canโt pinpoint them. Could be more than one.โ His voice is low, urgent. โWeโre heading back to Obsidian Howl. If they follow, thatโs on them. I made a vow to keep you safe. Now buckle up.โ
He slams the door, nearly catching my fingers. I curse under my breath as I yank the seatbelt across my chest.
โYou think itโs that Levi guy?โ I ask as he speeds away from Seraphinaโs house.
โNot sure. Even if he masks his scent, I shouldโve caught Hannahโs. She wasnโt there.โ
โMaybe they were watching them, not us.โ
โUs.โ His tone leaves no room for doubt. The car accelerates. My knuckles turn white where I grip the belt.
โHow can you be so sure?โ
โThereโs a car on our tail. Has been since we left.โ
I glance back. A silver sedan falls behind, then slows to a crawl before pulling onto the grass as we round the bend. 'They know we made them.' Nyx growls.
โLycans or Wolves?โ I ask.
โLycans, I think.โ
โYou think?โ
โMasked scent makes it hard. Could be Wolves. Not sticking around to find out.โ
โIs masking scents easy?โ
โNo. Itโs difficult. Deliberate.โ
I study his profile. Thereโs so much I donโt know about him. He only shares fragments, and only when he wants to. You canโt force anything out of a Wolf like him.
I check behind us again. The road is empty. โTheyโre gone.โ
Luc nods but doesnโt slow down. We nearly sideswipe an oncoming car. Finally, he eases off the gas, and we roll to a stop. I release a shaky breath. Cars still make me nervous.
โYouโre worried about Hannah. Weโll find her,โ I say, hoping it comforts him.
He glances at me, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, a smile forms. โYouโre right. We will.โ
Just as the car starts moving again, something slams into us from behind.
The seatbelt locks, crushing the air from my lungs. My organs lurch forward. I taste bile.
Sharp, burning pain tears through my chest and stomach where the belt digs in.
I look toward Luc.
He isnโt in his seat.
His body is half through the shattered windshield. Shards of glass pierce his skin. Blood sprays from multiple wounds.
'Athena, donโt move.' Nyxโs voice is dazed, disoriented.
โI have to help him,โ I whisper, fumbling for the belt clasp.
