Chapter 0440

Zachary

Her gaze remains fixed on me from inside the cell.

Evelyn had been watching both of us for some time.

But once her grey eyes locked onto mine, I became her sole focus.

โ€˜Rogue?โ€™ Alexander links through our mind connection.

โ€˜No. Luc would have detected it instantly, and so would I.โ€™

I study the cell.

The deep claw marks at the top made sense now.

She must have been over eight feet tall in her shifted form.

It was difficult to tell while she remained seated.

The rest of us typically reached around seven feet when fully shifted.

โ€œCan you speak?โ€ Alexander asks her.

Her eyes briefly flicker toward him before returning to me.

โ€œPerhaps we need Athena,โ€ I murmur.

โ€œIโ€™ll ask her to come down,โ€ Alexander says, frowning.

Evelyn gives a sharp nod, as if she knew exactly who we meant.

She doesnโ€™t move while we wait, but her eyes never leave me.

Itโ€™s starting to unsettle me.

Athenaโ€™s footsteps are soft as she descends the stairs.

โ€œWhat did you needโ€”โ€ She cuts herself off when she sees Evelynโ€™s Lycan form. โ€œShe shifted again?โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t appear to have control over it,โ€ Alexander explains.

โ€œBut sheโ€™s aware enough to remove her clothes first?โ€ Athena gestures toward the discarded clothing in the corner.

Alexander sighs. โ€œYes, it seems so.โ€

Athena suddenly raises a hand toward Evelyn. โ€œI am speaking to my mate.โ€

I glance into the cell and see Evelyn bow her head in submission.

This was new.

She had shown anger, frustration, even tears before.

But accepting dominance was different.

Maybe it was the Lycan in her.

Maybe she couldnโ€™t refuse.

Or maybe she was finally realizing she couldnโ€™t win.

It had taken long enough.

โ€œShe just shifted?โ€ Athena asks Alexander.

โ€œShe screamed and demanded we leave. Then this happened,โ€ Alexander says, gesturing toward Evelyn.

โ€œWe all knew she was a Lycan,โ€ I murmur.

Evelynโ€™s grey eyes flicker toward me.

โ€œBut sheโ€™s significantly larger than the rest of us. Could she be something more?โ€

Athena moves closer to the cell.

Evelyn continues watching me until Athena addresses her directly.

โ€œWho are you?โ€

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€

Athena falls silent for a moment.

Then she instructs Alexander and me to turn around.

โ€œNo one wants an audience if shifting causes pain.โ€

We turn and face the opposite cells.

A low growl escalates into a piercing howl.

Itโ€™s quickly replaced by a human scream, followed by sobbing.

โ€œGet dressed,โ€ Athena says firmly. โ€œYou need to provide clear answers.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ a whispered reply echoes through the dungeon.

โ€œYou mean you wonโ€™t,โ€ Athena presses.

โ€œNo, I canโ€™t. I didnโ€™t lie. I came here for help. That is the truth.โ€

โ€œFirst you said you came for help, then you claimed your brother sent you. Now youโ€™re back to saying it was for help. Which is it?โ€ Athena demands.

โ€œHelp. I need help.โ€ Her voice cracks with emotion.

โ€œThen why threaten us with your brother?โ€

โ€œYou were going to kill me. He always promised to protect me. But thisโ€ฆ the monsterโ€ฆ It hurts so much. Is this what he was shielding me from?โ€

I turn to see Evelyn sitting on the floor.

One leg is folded awkwardly beneath her while she hugs the other.

Tears well in her grey eyes.

โ€œLevi followed you here?โ€ I ask.

She points to her neck. โ€œI think he implanted something in me. I believe he does it to many people, to monitor them.โ€

โ€˜A tracker?โ€™ I link Alexander.

โ€˜Possibly,โ€™ he replies, though he seems deep in thought about something else. โ€œThe farm? You or Levi?โ€

โ€œLevi at first, to prevent anyone from escaping. Seraphina wasnโ€™t the first, but she was the first I liked. Thatโ€™s why I helped her. She reminded me of myself. I thought maybe he wouldnโ€™t notice if I helped just one. The othersโ€ฆ they were different. Dangerous, even without Wolves and Lycans. My job was to keep them occupied until Levi came for them. That was my role. And I got to stay on my little farm.โ€

Her eyes settle on Athena. โ€œSeraphina told me who you were. I thoughtโ€ฆ I thought this would be my salvation. But I knew I had to lie. To her, to him, to everyone.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the problem with too many lies,โ€ I tell her. โ€œYou unravel, and you end up in deeper trouble. The kind that gets you killed.โ€

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ Athena demands.

โ€œI just wanted to reach you. It took so long to persuade Seraphina to come here. I truly believed she would walk away after we traveled so far. I knew there was a chance you would kill her. I took that risk because I thought if I could just get her to show me where you were, then maybe I could convince everyone sheโ€™s not who she used to be. I didnโ€™t consider my own death a possibility. I thoughtโ€ฆ it doesnโ€™t matter now. I know you wonโ€™t help me.โ€
