Chapter 0262

He shook his head. โ€œHonestly, I despised the idea of Brianna being my mate. I fought it every step of the way. Yet I could never bring myself to reject her. She kept showing up, making sure I wasnโ€™t drinking. Even when I told her to get lost, she came back. Eventually, I found myself watching her. I can see her front door from my kitchen window. Every evening, she does the same thing. Sits outside with a mug of tea. Just watches.โ€

Now I understood what Brianna meant when she said she liked to watch.

โ€œA few nights ago, she broke her routine. I followed her scent into the forest. I overheard her mind-linkโ€”it wasnโ€™t meant for me. My heart dropped when I realized she was in danger.โ€

โ€œThe mate bond does that to you. You knocked Julian out?โ€

โ€œYes. But he wasnโ€™t himself. He didnโ€™t wake up like I expected.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s in the hospital. Fighting for his life,โ€ I muttered.

โ€œItโ€™s that serious?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œBrianna filled me in. I know Iโ€™m not your Beta anymore, but she kept me updated. I want to help if I can.โ€

โ€œWhere is she now?โ€

โ€œI think Athena is letting her see the twins.โ€

That surprised me more than anything. Athena had outright refused to let Brianna near them until now.

โ€œHave you really quit drinking?โ€

I couldnโ€™t smell a drop on him. โ€œA couple of weeks.โ€ That matched what Brianna had told me. โ€œIโ€™m in a much better place now.โ€

I imagined Brianna had a lot to do with that.

โ€œGood. I need a second Beta.โ€ He raised an eyebrow. โ€œZachary is a great Beta, but he hasnโ€™t taken the blood oath yet. It makes sharing information with the pack difficult. You could do that, just like before. But youโ€™ll be working alongside Zachary.โ€

โ€œOf course. Where do you need me?โ€

I filled him in on the little Julian had said before he collapsed.

Sebastian smiled slightly. โ€œBrianna is smart.โ€

โ€œMuch wiser than any of us gave her credit for.โ€

He nodded. โ€œIโ€™ll speak to the guards. Set up a new rotation. Upgrade training again, I suppose.โ€

โ€œInclude weapons training. From what Iโ€™ve heard, Seraphina is well-trained. It might throw her off.โ€

He left, and I headed upstairs to the nursery. Logan and Evrin were staring at Brianna in amazement as she played peekaboo with them. They giggled every time she โ€˜reappearedโ€™.

Charlotte was sitting on Athenaโ€™s lap, whispering something almost directly into her ear.

โ€œYou know where the snack box is,โ€ Athena murmured back with a smile.

Charlotte had been with us for a while, but she still asked permission for almost everything. Still afraid of being told โ€˜noโ€™ or going hungry. It tugged at Athenaโ€™s heart because of her own past. She always kept the snack box stocked with Charlotteโ€™s favorites and never said no.

She skipped past me toward the stairs, but Athenaโ€™s eyes were on me. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œJulian is in the hospital.โ€

โ€œWait,โ€ Brianna muttered. โ€œYou were going to give me forty-eight hours.โ€

โ€œTurns out he didnโ€™t have that left,โ€ I sighed. โ€œThe forced shift killed his wolf. Julian died with him. We restarted his heart, but it doesnโ€™t look good.โ€

โ€œCan he survive that? I thought only Alpha blood carries an extra spirit?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. But you were right, Brianna. He said he messed up. His stubbornness to ask for help means we might be too late. Isabella is doing what she can.โ€

The twins were oblivious to our conversation, tugging on Briannaโ€™s sleeves to keep playing. She forced a smile and continued playing as she asked what we were going to do.

I repeated the same plan I had told Sebastian.

โ€œIs she really coming?โ€ Athena asked quietly.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. But it felt like a warning.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t let the darkness in now, Athena,โ€ Brianna warned. โ€œThat might be exactly what sheโ€™s looking for.โ€ She turned to me. โ€œWe need to find more Lycans.โ€
