Chapter 0268

Athena

His hazel eyes narrowed sharply.

He knew exactly who I meant.

Yet the gun remained firmly aimed.

โ€œThat treacherous snake is still breathing?โ€ He snarled, his jaw tight.

โ€œYes. Hopefully not for long.โ€ I offered a tentative smile, hoping to diffuse the situation.

He didnโ€™t return it. โ€œWe require assistance.โ€

โ€œIs she speaking the truth?โ€ He demanded, looking at Theodore and Sebastian.

โ€œSeraphina is the reason weโ€™re here,โ€ Sebastian stated coldly. โ€œNow lower the damn weapon.โ€

โ€œNo. You trespass on my land. I make the rules. If you want her to keep her pretty head intact, start talking. Now.โ€

โ€œHere?โ€ Theodore questioned. โ€œWeโ€™ll draw human attention.โ€

โ€œLook around! Itโ€™s the dead of night. No other houses for miles. Why do you think I led you here, you fool?โ€ A cruel smile finally twisted his lips. โ€œFucking pack morons.โ€ He spat on the ground.

They told him the story. Almost all of it.

I felt the gunโ€™s pressure lessen at times, only to be jammed back against my skin moments later.

I could heal, but the pain was real.

I remained perfectly still. I wouldnโ€™t give him another reason to pull the trigger.

โ€œYou expect me to believe that fairy tale?โ€ Lucas Adler growled, his gaze never leaving me.

โ€œSeems too elaborate to be a lie, donโ€™t you think?โ€ I muttered.

โ€œIโ€™ve known expert liars. That serpent is one of them.โ€

โ€œSeraphina?โ€ What had she lied to him about?

โ€œThe very one.โ€

โ€œCan we discuss this properly?โ€ Theodore asked. โ€œWolf to Wolf?โ€

โ€œYou have more to say?โ€ He sounded amused.

โ€œSo much more,โ€ Theodore muttered. โ€œIf youโ€™re willing to listen.โ€

Lucas seized my wrist, spinning me around.

He locked his arm across my chest, pulling me backward.

โ€œYou have five minutes,โ€ he told them.

Sebastianโ€™s expression was unreadable as he and Theodore followed.

Lucas dragged me into a dimly lit kitchen.

Black and white striped tiles covered the floor.

Black cabinets with black marble countertops lined the walls.

The interior was nothing like the dilapidated exterior.

I shouldnโ€™t have judged the book by its cover. Or the house by its outside.

Sebastian and Theodore entered, moving to opposite sides of the room.

โ€œSplit up or stay together. I donโ€™t care. One wrong move, and she dies. Now, convince me why I should let her live.โ€

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ Theodore asked.

โ€œSeraphina,โ€ Lucas muttered.

โ€œMany want her. Both Alphas. Another Lycan. Her.โ€ Sebastian pointed at me. โ€œShe causes problems. Youโ€™ll have to get in line.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m certain she ruined my life first,โ€ Lucas snarled. โ€œTake me to her, and this one lives.โ€

This was not why we came.

โ€œWhat did she do to you?โ€ I asked.

โ€œShe murdered my parents.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause they were Hunters. They destroyed your kind.โ€

I had walked into another hostage situation.

This one felt far more lethal.

โ€œBut you havenโ€™t told me everything. Why is a Lycan Alpha mated to a Wolf Alpha?โ€

โ€œThey are mates,โ€ Sebastian stated.

I wondered if that was the worst thing to say.

Lucas burst into laughter.

A deep, roaring laugh that echoed through the kitchen.

He shoved me away.

Sebastian caught me, pulling me close with a protective arm around me.

Lucas was truly unhinged.

โ€œYou people are completely insane!โ€

He thought we were the crazy ones.

โ€œYou pack Wolves are so predictable.โ€ He pointed between the men. โ€œI assume one of you is the Beta, since the Alpha isnโ€™t here.โ€

Neither Theodore nor Sebastian spoke.

They seemed as confused as I was.

Theodore had been quiet for a while.

โ€œAnyone want a beer?โ€ Lucas asked, opening the fridge.

โ€œWhat is happening?โ€ I was used to unpredictability, but this was extreme.

From gunpoint to a beer offer, like a casual social call.

This guy had to be on something. โ€œYou just held a gun to my head!โ€

โ€œPrecautions.โ€ He straightened, muscles tensing.

I reminded myself why we were here.

โ€œA few things you should know about me, Lycan.โ€ He popped the cap off his beer and took a swig. โ€œI know when Iโ€™m not getting the full story. I know she,โ€ he pointed at me, โ€œwas Rogue once. I know exactly what a Rogue is. Iโ€™ve hunted them for twenty years. You told me little I didnโ€™t already know. Iโ€™m certain thereโ€™s more. So, whatโ€™s the catch?โ€

โ€œWe seek Lycans. The female Lycan Alpha requires support,โ€ Sebastian told him.

โ€œThen why doesnโ€™t she link them? Sheโ€™s the last one, right? Powerful? She can call them in.โ€

"Uh..."

"Like I said. I know my shit."
