Chapter 0075
He gives me a gentle smile. โBut look at you now.โ
โIโm still small,โ I whisper. Compared to the other women in the pack, I felt tiny.
โWhat Iโm saying, Athena, is that you shouldnโt have survived the journey here. Yet somehow, you did.โ
โBecause Iโm a Lycan?โ
โMaybe. Maybe itโs because you were traveling with your true mate. Maybe itโs because you have a stronger will to live than you realize. Maybe you survived because the world still needs you.โ
โCaleb got in your head!โ I mutter.
โMaybe he just opened my eyes a little.โ
โWhatโฆ what does that mean?โ
โItโs no secret there are more than just humans and Wolves in this world. Looking at it that way, we shouldnโt be surprised when something new appears.โ
โMe?โ
He nods. โWe messed up. We entered this agreement blindly. We shouldโve done more research. We shouldโve questioned Dominic more. Alexander probably would have, if he hadnโt been so drawn to you.โ
โYou blame me?โ
โNot at all. I enjoy a good war, no matter how it starts.โ
A war was the last thing I wanted.
โWould you like to speak to Caleb? I can take you to him if you want.โ
โAlpha Alexander wonโt like that.โ
โThen why did he suggest it?โ
Beta Sebastian makes me eat a sandwich first. He says he wonโt let me pass out from hunger.
Alpha Alexander still hadnโt returned by the time we walked across the snow-covered grass. It made me nervous. After forcing our closeness earlier, he was now keeping his distance.
โYou came.โ Caleb smiles as I step in front of his cell. โI didnโt think youโd come back after last time.โ His blue eyes shift to Beta Sebastian. โGood to see you, too.โ He glances toward the steps. โNo Alpha Alexander?โ
โNot right now,โ Beta Sebastian tells him.
I just stare at Caleb. I didnโt know what to say or ask. I didnโt even fully understand why I had agreed to come with Beta Sebastian.
He smiles at me. โI know youโre not just here to stare. You have questions.โ
โI wasโฆ bound four times.โ
โThatโs not really a question.โ
โShouldโฆโ I glance at Beta Sebastian. โShould I be dead?โ
I see him swallow. He shifts his gaze to Beta Sebastian and sighs. โIn theory, yes.โ He sits back on his small bed. โYou were last bound when you were eighteen, right?โ
I nod.
โDominic, Victoria, whoever did it probably hoped it would kill you. And yet, you survived.โ
โIf they wanted her dead, why not just kill her?โ Beta Sebastian asks.
โI donโt know. Iโve been trying to figure that out for years. If it were anyone else, they wouldโve just killed their problem, right? Thatโs what Alpha Alexander would do here, right? And other packs, too. So there must have been some benefit to keeping you alive.โ
โIt canโt be because Athena is an Alpha,โ Beta Sebastian murmurs.
Beta Sebastianโs eyes flicker up behind me just as Alpha Alexanderโs strong, woody scent washes over me.
โYouโre right.โ His crimson eyes lock onto mine. โItโs because you are able to carry the next Alpha.โ
