Chapter 0075

He gives me a gentle smile. โ€œBut look at you now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m still small,โ€ I whisper. Compared to the other women in the pack, I felt tiny.

โ€œWhat Iโ€™m saying, Athena, is that you shouldnโ€™t have survived the journey here. Yet somehow, you did.โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m a Lycan?โ€

โ€œMaybe. Maybe itโ€™s because you were traveling with your true mate. Maybe itโ€™s because you have a stronger will to live than you realize. Maybe you survived because the world still needs you.โ€

โ€œCaleb got in your head!โ€ I mutter.

โ€œMaybe he just opened my eyes a little.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ what does that mean?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s no secret there are more than just humans and Wolves in this world. Looking at it that way, we shouldnโ€™t be surprised when something new appears.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

He nods. โ€œWe messed up. We entered this agreement blindly. We shouldโ€™ve done more research. We shouldโ€™ve questioned Dominic more. Alexander probably would have, if he hadnโ€™t been so drawn to you.โ€

โ€œYou blame me?โ€

โ€œNot at all. I enjoy a good war, no matter how it starts.โ€

A war was the last thing I wanted.

โ€œWould you like to speak to Caleb? I can take you to him if you want.โ€

โ€œAlpha Alexander wonโ€™t like that.โ€

โ€œThen why did he suggest it?โ€

Beta Sebastian makes me eat a sandwich first. He says he wonโ€™t let me pass out from hunger.

Alpha Alexander still hadnโ€™t returned by the time we walked across the snow-covered grass. It made me nervous. After forcing our closeness earlier, he was now keeping his distance.

โ€œYou came.โ€ Caleb smiles as I step in front of his cell. โ€œI didnโ€™t think youโ€™d come back after last time.โ€ His blue eyes shift to Beta Sebastian. โ€œGood to see you, too.โ€ He glances toward the steps. โ€œNo Alpha Alexander?โ€

โ€œNot right now,โ€ Beta Sebastian tells him.

I just stare at Caleb. I didnโ€™t know what to say or ask. I didnโ€™t even fully understand why I had agreed to come with Beta Sebastian.

He smiles at me. โ€œI know youโ€™re not just here to stare. You have questions.โ€

โ€œI wasโ€ฆ bound four times.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not really a question.โ€

โ€œShouldโ€ฆโ€ I glance at Beta Sebastian. โ€œShould I be dead?โ€

I see him swallow. He shifts his gaze to Beta Sebastian and sighs. โ€œIn theory, yes.โ€ He sits back on his small bed. โ€œYou were last bound when you were eighteen, right?โ€

I nod.

โ€œDominic, Victoria, whoever did it probably hoped it would kill you. And yet, you survived.โ€

โ€œIf they wanted her dead, why not just kill her?โ€ Beta Sebastian asks.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. Iโ€™ve been trying to figure that out for years. If it were anyone else, they wouldโ€™ve just killed their problem, right? Thatโ€™s what Alpha Alexander would do here, right? And other packs, too. So there must have been some benefit to keeping you alive.โ€

โ€œIt canโ€™t be because Athena is an Alpha,โ€ Beta Sebastian murmurs.

Beta Sebastianโ€™s eyes flicker up behind me just as Alpha Alexanderโ€™s strong, woody scent washes over me.

โ€œYouโ€™re right.โ€ His crimson eyes lock onto mine. โ€œItโ€™s because you are able to carry the next Alpha.โ€
