Chapter 0173
Zachary
Her fingers stay locked with mine as I place her gently on the mattress. Isabella doesnโt utter a word. Tears still stream down her cheeks in heavy, silent waves.
The agony sheโs feeling is brutal. Until now, I hadnโt realized that losing a twin could cut as deep as losing a mate.
It didnโt matter that he was still breathing. He had turned his back on the pack. That meant turning his back on her, too.
And it shattered her completely.
Did he feel this same emptiness? Or was he too lost in his own grief over an unclaimed mate? Either way, I donโt think I can ever forgive him for what heโs done to Isabella.
She cries until exhaustion pulls her under. Dried blood from helping Brianna still marks her skin. Even in sleep, she whimpers softly before finally going still.
I clean her carefully. She doesnโt stir. I hope my touch offers some comfort. Sheโs been through hell these past few days. She didnโt need this on top of everything.
I slip out of her room and head for the stairs. I pause outside the Alphaโs door when I catch her scent. I can hear her pacing softly inside.
โI know youโre out there,โ she says. โCome in.โ
She doesnโt stop moving when I enter. Her hands are on her hips. A deep frown marks her face.
โAthena, you should be resting. Especially after tonight,โ I say quietly, my gaze drifting to her rounded stomach. Those twins had to survive. They were vital to our future.
โZachary, stop calling me Alpha. Iโm fine. How is Isabella?โ
โAsleep.โ
โYouโve marked her. Tell me how she really feels.โ
โLike her heartโs been torn out. Sheโs in deep pain.โ
She nods, still pacing. โIโm going to kill him, Zachary.โ
โJulian?โ
โYou know Iโm not talking about Julian.โ She stops and pins me with a look. โAre you going to try and stop me?โ
โNo.โ There was a time I might have. When packs and Alphas meant nothing to me.
โGood.โ She grabs a jacket from the closet. โLetโs go.โ
โRight now? Even I know thatโs reckless.โ
โYou said you wouldnโt stop me.โ
โIโm not stopping you. Iโm suggesting we pick a better time. When emotions arenโt running the show. Iโve seen people make huge mistakes when they let feelings take over.โ
She rolls her eyes and drops onto the bed.
โHeโs causing chaos. You almost lost your friend. Your mate. How are you so calm?โ
โPractice. You wouldnโt believe what I was like before I became Lycan.โ
She smirks lightly. โWhat, some kind of mass murderer?โ
โFor those who deserved it.โ
Color drains from her face, but her blue eyes gleam with curiosity. โThatโs why she turned you.โ
I nod. โShe thought Iโd be a good asset to her little club.โ
โHumans, I assume? Before you were turned?โ
โYes.โ
โHow many?โ
โI lost count.โ I shrug. The number of monsters I ended meant nothing compared to the lives I saved.
โFifty?โ
โNo.โ
โA hundred?โ
โThatโs when I stopped counting.โ
โWhat do you mean, โthose who deserved itโ?โ
โThose who hurt children. Young women. If I had known what Victoria and Dominic were doing to you, I would have torn them apart myself.โ
โIs that why youโre loyal to me now? Because you feel you owe me?โ
โYes.โ
โHave you told Isabella about your past?โ
โNo. Nobody wants to hear that.โ
โYou should tell her. Youโve claimed her. How do you think sheโll feel if she finds out you kept a secret like that? Trust me, I know what itโs like to have your whole life built on lies.โ
