Chapter 0173

Zachary

Her fingers stay locked with mine as I place her gently on the mattress. Isabella doesnโ€™t utter a word. Tears still stream down her cheeks in heavy, silent waves.

The agony sheโ€™s feeling is brutal. Until now, I hadnโ€™t realized that losing a twin could cut as deep as losing a mate.

It didnโ€™t matter that he was still breathing. He had turned his back on the pack. That meant turning his back on her, too.

And it shattered her completely.

Did he feel this same emptiness? Or was he too lost in his own grief over an unclaimed mate? Either way, I donโ€™t think I can ever forgive him for what heโ€™s done to Isabella.

She cries until exhaustion pulls her under. Dried blood from helping Brianna still marks her skin. Even in sleep, she whimpers softly before finally going still.

I clean her carefully. She doesnโ€™t stir. I hope my touch offers some comfort. Sheโ€™s been through hell these past few days. She didnโ€™t need this on top of everything.

I slip out of her room and head for the stairs. I pause outside the Alphaโ€™s door when I catch her scent. I can hear her pacing softly inside.

โ€œI know youโ€™re out there,โ€ she says. โ€œCome in.โ€

She doesnโ€™t stop moving when I enter. Her hands are on her hips. A deep frown marks her face.

โ€œAthena, you should be resting. Especially after tonight,โ€ I say quietly, my gaze drifting to her rounded stomach. Those twins had to survive. They were vital to our future.

โ€œZachary, stop calling me Alpha. Iโ€™m fine. How is Isabella?โ€

โ€œAsleep.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve marked her. Tell me how she really feels.โ€

โ€œLike her heartโ€™s been torn out. Sheโ€™s in deep pain.โ€

She nods, still pacing. โ€œIโ€™m going to kill him, Zachary.โ€

โ€œJulian?โ€

โ€œYou know Iโ€™m not talking about Julian.โ€ She stops and pins me with a look. โ€œAre you going to try and stop me?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ There was a time I might have. When packs and Alphas meant nothing to me.

โ€œGood.โ€ She grabs a jacket from the closet. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œRight now? Even I know thatโ€™s reckless.โ€

โ€œYou said you wouldnโ€™t stop me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not stopping you. Iโ€™m suggesting we pick a better time. When emotions arenโ€™t running the show. Iโ€™ve seen people make huge mistakes when they let feelings take over.โ€

She rolls her eyes and drops onto the bed.

โ€œHeโ€™s causing chaos. You almost lost your friend. Your mate. How are you so calm?โ€

โ€œPractice. You wouldnโ€™t believe what I was like before I became Lycan.โ€

She smirks lightly. โ€œWhat, some kind of mass murderer?โ€

โ€œFor those who deserved it.โ€

Color drains from her face, but her blue eyes gleam with curiosity. โ€œThatโ€™s why she turned you.โ€

I nod. โ€œShe thought Iโ€™d be a good asset to her little club.โ€

โ€œHumans, I assume? Before you were turned?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œHow many?โ€

โ€œI lost count.โ€ I shrug. The number of monsters I ended meant nothing compared to the lives I saved.

โ€œFifty?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œA hundred?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s when I stopped counting.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, โ€˜those who deserved itโ€™?โ€

โ€œThose who hurt children. Young women. If I had known what Victoria and Dominic were doing to you, I would have torn them apart myself.โ€

โ€œIs that why youโ€™re loyal to me now? Because you feel you owe me?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œHave you told Isabella about your past?โ€

โ€œNo. Nobody wants to hear that.โ€

โ€œYou should tell her. Youโ€™ve claimed her. How do you think sheโ€™ll feel if she finds out you kept a secret like that? Trust me, I know what itโ€™s like to have your whole life built on lies.โ€
