Chapter 0224

โ€œI assume you wished to speak with me.โ€ His tone was icy.

โ€œI believe Gabriel is dead.โ€

He froze. His crimson eyes lifted from the documents to meet mine. That shade still unsettled me, though it no longer shocked me each time I saw him. Isabella had mentioned that Alexander always attributed it to his Alpha status. Iโ€™d encountered enough Alphas to know crimson eyes were rare. In fact, Iโ€™d never seen another Wolf with them.

โ€œI was in the training hall. A terrible pain spiraled through my heart. As if my life was being drained away.โ€

He leaned back in his chair, giving me a knowing look. โ€œThatโ€™s the pain of losing a sibling. Itโ€™s what Isabella and I felt when Julian severed our bond. But youโ€™re here, so you didnโ€™t kill him?โ€

โ€œNo. Like I said, I was training.โ€

โ€œI hope he suffered for what he did to Sebastianโ€™s children and Isabella.โ€

โ€œYou mean Julianโ€™s children?โ€

โ€œSebastian raised them. You should have told him. Perhaps it would have helpedโ€ฆ though I doubt it now. I think heโ€™s beyond reason.โ€

โ€œWords wonโ€™t help him, Alexander. We both know that. Be grateful he isnโ€™t a Lycan.โ€

He didnโ€™t need to ask for clarification. He understood perfectly.

โ€œAre you making Theodore your Beta?โ€ I pressed.

His lips pressed into a thin line, jaw tightening. โ€œI should. But no.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t wait for that drunk to get his act together!โ€

โ€œAthena wants you to be my Beta.โ€

โ€œWhat? I canโ€™t do that. Iโ€™m not a Wolf.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I told her. But she pointed out that Obsidian Howl is hardly just a Wolf pack anymore. She is a Lycan. A female Alpha who now serves as my Luna. My sons, heirs to the Wolf pack, are also Lycans. Plus, we have two additional Lycans living among us.โ€ He snorted. โ€œSheโ€™s right. Things are changing.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m her guard.โ€

โ€œExactly what a Beta is meant to do. I know we donโ€™t always see eye to eye, Zachary. Perhaps thatโ€™s a good thing.โ€

I raised a brow at him.

โ€œJust consider it.โ€

He asked if I had spoken to Isabella.

โ€œAt first, I thought the pain was connected to her. I feared something had happened. But sheโ€™s in the kitchen, eating ice cream.โ€

โ€œAh, no need to say more.โ€ He nodded knowingly. Isabella had told me Alexander essentially raised her and her twin brother through their teenage years. He took them in as his own when he became Alpha. No doubt she gave him a hard time during puberty. Both probably did. I was glad I missed that.

Becoming Alpha young had mostly worked in Alexanderโ€™s favor. He definitely knew how to pressure people into helping him. I wondered if he had managed to get someone on the outside to kill my brother. I didnโ€™t care if he had. I just wanted to know who so I could thank them.

โ€œWho do you think killed him?โ€ Gabriel had evaded capture for years. He always stayed one step ahead of us. Now, suddenly, he was dead. I didnโ€™t buy it. It sounded like someone else was hunting him.

He shrugged. โ€œDoes it matter if heโ€™s dead?โ€

โ€œIt shouldnโ€™t. But I prefer to know who.โ€
