Chapter 0236

Brianna

โ€œWhat a complete bitch!โ€ I mutter under my breath, seething with frustration. How could two people share the same father yet be so entirely different?

Zachary swings the front door open forcefully. He had waited until Athena was safely back with Alexander before coming to find me.

โ€œWhat the hell were you thinking?โ€ he demands sharply. โ€œI had to tell Athena it was my idea for you to be hiding in the damn trees.โ€

โ€œWhy would you say that?โ€

โ€œBecause she questions everything you do. Youโ€™re lucky she bought it. Are you trying to get yourself killed?โ€

โ€œNo, I justโ€ฆ I thought I could help by keeping watch. Nobody lets me join guard duty, so I took matters into my own hands. We all know Rogues and Lycans favor tree cover.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you just tell me your plan?โ€

โ€œBecause you wouldโ€™ve said no. You seem to forget I used to watch over the Rogues before you. I kept an eye on anyone passing through town. And itโ€™s a good thing I was in those trees. Neither of you spotted the gun tucked into the back of her ridiculous leather leggings!โ€

โ€œA gun?โ€ His surprise mirrors my own when I first saw it.

โ€œYes! Not exactly a Lycanโ€™s weapon of choice, right? But I know what I saw!โ€

I lift the coffee pot and gesture if he wants a cup. He nods, slowly sinking into a chair as he processes my words.

โ€œYou think she was going to kill Athena?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. All I know is the moment she asked to speak to Athena alone, I had to act. Athena might still hate me, but if I can prevent her death, I will.โ€ I shrug wearily. Iโ€™m tired of constantly proving myself, but Iโ€™ll keep trying as long as Iโ€™m here and breathing.

โ€œI appreciate what you did.โ€

โ€œBut she doesnโ€™t, does she?โ€ I sigh deeply. โ€œI donโ€™t know what else to do, Zachary. If I just sit around, I feel like Iโ€™m waiting for the day Athena decides sheโ€™s had enough and orders my execution. If I act, itโ€™s wrong. If I donโ€™t act, itโ€™s wrong. Iโ€™ve told you many times - maybe now is the time I leave for good.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ His response is blunt and final. No explanation. Just that single word.

โ€œZachary, you know as well as I do that everyone whoโ€™s hurt her is dead. She keeps very few people in her inner circle because of it. You, Isabella, Theodore, Sebastian and Alexander. Thatโ€™s it. Iโ€™m literally waiting for her to say โ€˜enoughโ€™ and have me hanged in front of everyone.โ€

โ€œShe wonโ€™t hang you.โ€

โ€œYou wonโ€™t be able to stop her. Sheโ€™ll just order you to stand down.โ€

โ€œNo, I mean she wonโ€™t hang you. Sheโ€™ll have you torn apart or rip your heart from your chest.โ€

โ€œThanks for the vote of confidence!โ€ I snap sarcastically.

He groans. โ€œForgiveness doesnโ€™t come easily for some people.โ€

My shoulders slump. โ€œI know, but youโ€™re the only one here who tolerates me. Everyone else only sees what I did years ago. Nobody lets me train with them. Nobody wants to be my friend except you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve seen you talking to Isabella and Theodore.โ€

โ€œOkay, maybe Isabella. But I think Theodore only talks to me because heโ€™s an oddball.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not like you to sound so whiny.โ€ Zachary raises an eyebrow at me.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t whining. This is me reaching the end of my patience. Unlike other situations, I canโ€™t just take her forgiveness. Itโ€™s not a physical object! I have to earn it, and I genuinely donโ€™t know how.โ€ I slam his mug down harder than intended, coffee sloshing onto the table.

I angrily wipe up the spill, feeling his dark eyes burning into the side of my face.

โ€œHave you considered this might not actually be about you?โ€ His tone holds no frustration, unlike mine.

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œThe whole time weโ€™ve been here, what have we learned?โ€

โ€œThat Iโ€™m the bitch?!โ€

He snorts and shakes his head. โ€œShe comes from trauma. Not once has she had it easy. And I still believe we donโ€™t know everything. Darkness clings to every part of her being, feeding on that trauma, manipulating her thoughts and feelings in ways she probably doesnโ€™t even recognize. You know this.โ€

โ€œThen thereโ€™s also the possibility she doesnโ€™t know how to handle genuine apologies. Or maybe sheโ€™s never heard one from someone who truly means it. We both know sometimes itโ€™s easier to stay angry at the world than to forgive. And itโ€™s ten times harder for her because sheโ€™s fighting battles only she can fight.โ€
