Chapter 0140
Athena
โWhat do you mean, Isabella?โ I mumble as she pulls me inside.
She shakes her head, avoiding my eyes. โItโs not her scent. Itโs on her. Someone sheโs been close to.โ
โAnother Lycan?โ
โI canโt tell. Thereโs no way to know for sure. When you first arrived, you smelled like a wolf too. But you had that strange scent from the binding. She mentioned Rogues? What if itโs one of them?โ
I just shrug. I have no idea what a Rogue even is.
โI never thoughtโฆ not after Gabriel.โ Her eyes hold a trace of sadness.
โYou loved him.โ
โPart of me still does.โ She lets out a soft sigh. โHe was everything to me. And he threw it all away because of my brother. Because of my pack.โ
โAre you worried this new mate wonโt measure up?โ Iโm grateful for the change of subject, even if itโs brief.
โI donโt know. All I know is heโll have to be pretty incredible for me to even think about accepting him.โ
โIโd trade problems with you.โ I offer a weak smile.
โYour problems are mine.โ She nudges my shoulder gently. โAnd one of them is coming right now.โ
Through the open door, we see Brianna walking toward us. Her hands are stuffed in her jeans pockets. A deep frown marks her face.
Who does she think she is, being angry? Sheโs lucky we let her live.
She stops just outside. Her eyes lock on me. โCan we talk?โ
The nerve! Nyx snarls inwardly.
โI have nothing to say to you.โ My tone leaves no room for discussion.
She nods, a faint smile touching her lips. โYou donโt stutter anymore.โ
I narrow my eyes. โWhy are you here? Why did my brother bring you?โ
โHe was asked to.โ
โBy who?โ Isabella demands.
โMy best friend. Look, I didnโt want to come. I wanted to stay in my town. But the Rogues are getting out of hand. Zachary says theyโre turning feral. Impossible to control.โ
Isabellaโs dark gaze flicks to me before returning to Brianna. โAnd where is this Zachary?โ
โHe stayed behind. Heโs trying to eliminate the Rogues. He said if he succeeds, heโll meet me here.โ
โThis mate of yoursโฆ is he Lycan too?โ
โHeโs not my mate. But yes, he was bitten like the rest of us.โ She shows us the mark on her skin. โWell, almost like all of us.โ Her brown eyes settle on me, and she takes a step closer. โI think you might be the only purebred left.โ
โThatโs close enough.โ Isabella holds up a hand, stepping between us.
โI still canโt believe youโre alive.โ Brianna shakes her blonde hair loose. โYou should be dead. I thought I killed you.โ
โIs that why you came? To finish what you started?โ Isabella snaps.
โNo. Of course not.โ
โThen why didnโt you lead with an apology?โ Isabellaโs voice is sharp.
โCan anyone even apologize for something like that?โ Brianna frowns. โItโs unforgivable. Words wouldnโt mean anything. I know if our roles were reversed, Athena wouldnโt be apologizing to me.โ
No, Nyx murmurs. We wouldโve made sure the job was done.
โYou need to leave!โ Isabella orders.
โI havenโt killed anyone since that day.โ Brianna mumbles, ignoring Isabella. โI couldnโt. I only shift to scare people. To make them back off. I make threats, but I rarely follow through. That day changed me.โ
โAnd thatโs supposed to make me feel sorry for you?โ I snap.
โNo, thatโs not what Iโm saying. They used me too. Victoria did. She fed me lies about you. Lies I believed because I thought she was amazing. I wanted to make her happy. I wanted her to think I was worthy.โ
โBy hurting someone defenseless? What the hell is wrong with you?โ Isabella growls.
She shrugs. โEverything.โ
Briannaโs eyes shift between us. โI helped him find Sophia.โ
โI canโt listen to this.โ I whisper to Isabella.
She nods and tells me to go rest.
I leave them talking and head upstairs. Dominic and Victoria are dead. I thought I was done with people from my past.
I was drifting in and out of sleep when Alexander appeared. He carried the stench of blood.
โIs Ethan dead?โ I murmur drowsily.
โNot yet.โ He leans over and presses his lips to mine. โWeโre having some fun first.โ
He pulls away, and moments later the shower starts. I wait until heโs inside before sitting up. โWhy did you bring her here?โ
He pauses, looking at me through the glass door. โI was asked to bring her.โ
