Chapter 0140

Athena

โ€œWhat do you mean, Isabella?โ€ I mumble as she pulls me inside.

She shakes her head, avoiding my eyes. โ€œItโ€™s not her scent. Itโ€™s on her. Someone sheโ€™s been close to.โ€

โ€œAnother Lycan?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t tell. Thereโ€™s no way to know for sure. When you first arrived, you smelled like a wolf too. But you had that strange scent from the binding. She mentioned Rogues? What if itโ€™s one of them?โ€

I just shrug. I have no idea what a Rogue even is.

โ€œI never thoughtโ€ฆ not after Gabriel.โ€ Her eyes hold a trace of sadness.

โ€œYou loved him.โ€

โ€œPart of me still does.โ€ She lets out a soft sigh. โ€œHe was everything to me. And he threw it all away because of my brother. Because of my pack.โ€

โ€œAre you worried this new mate wonโ€™t measure up?โ€ Iโ€™m grateful for the change of subject, even if itโ€™s brief.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. All I know is heโ€™ll have to be pretty incredible for me to even think about accepting him.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d trade problems with you.โ€ I offer a weak smile.

โ€œYour problems are mine.โ€ She nudges my shoulder gently. โ€œAnd one of them is coming right now.โ€

Through the open door, we see Brianna walking toward us. Her hands are stuffed in her jeans pockets. A deep frown marks her face.

Who does she think she is, being angry? Sheโ€™s lucky we let her live.

She stops just outside. Her eyes lock on me. โ€œCan we talk?โ€

The nerve! Nyx snarls inwardly.

โ€œI have nothing to say to you.โ€ My tone leaves no room for discussion.

She nods, a faint smile touching her lips. โ€œYou donโ€™t stutter anymore.โ€

I narrow my eyes. โ€œWhy are you here? Why did my brother bring you?โ€

โ€œHe was asked to.โ€

โ€œBy who?โ€ Isabella demands.

โ€œMy best friend. Look, I didnโ€™t want to come. I wanted to stay in my town. But the Rogues are getting out of hand. Zachary says theyโ€™re turning feral. Impossible to control.โ€

Isabellaโ€™s dark gaze flicks to me before returning to Brianna. โ€œAnd where is this Zachary?โ€

โ€œHe stayed behind. Heโ€™s trying to eliminate the Rogues. He said if he succeeds, heโ€™ll meet me here.โ€

โ€œThis mate of yoursโ€ฆ is he Lycan too?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not my mate. But yes, he was bitten like the rest of us.โ€ She shows us the mark on her skin. โ€œWell, almost like all of us.โ€ Her brown eyes settle on me, and she takes a step closer. โ€œI think you might be the only purebred left.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s close enough.โ€ Isabella holds up a hand, stepping between us.

โ€œI still canโ€™t believe youโ€™re alive.โ€ Brianna shakes her blonde hair loose. โ€œYou should be dead. I thought I killed you.โ€

โ€œIs that why you came? To finish what you started?โ€ Isabella snaps.

โ€œNo. Of course not.โ€

โ€œThen why didnโ€™t you lead with an apology?โ€ Isabellaโ€™s voice is sharp.

โ€œCan anyone even apologize for something like that?โ€ Brianna frowns. โ€œItโ€™s unforgivable. Words wouldnโ€™t mean anything. I know if our roles were reversed, Athena wouldnโ€™t be apologizing to me.โ€

No, Nyx murmurs. We wouldโ€™ve made sure the job was done.

โ€œYou need to leave!โ€ Isabella orders.

โ€œI havenโ€™t killed anyone since that day.โ€ Brianna mumbles, ignoring Isabella. โ€œI couldnโ€™t. I only shift to scare people. To make them back off. I make threats, but I rarely follow through. That day changed me.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s supposed to make me feel sorry for you?โ€ I snap.

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m saying. They used me too. Victoria did. She fed me lies about you. Lies I believed because I thought she was amazing. I wanted to make her happy. I wanted her to think I was worthy.โ€

โ€œBy hurting someone defenseless? What the hell is wrong with you?โ€ Isabella growls.

She shrugs. โ€œEverything.โ€

Briannaโ€™s eyes shift between us. โ€œI helped him find Sophia.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t listen to this.โ€ I whisper to Isabella.

She nods and tells me to go rest.

I leave them talking and head upstairs. Dominic and Victoria are dead. I thought I was done with people from my past.

I was drifting in and out of sleep when Alexander appeared. He carried the stench of blood.

โ€œIs Ethan dead?โ€ I murmur drowsily.

โ€œNot yet.โ€ He leans over and presses his lips to mine. โ€œWeโ€™re having some fun first.โ€

He pulls away, and moments later the shower starts. I wait until heโ€™s inside before sitting up. โ€œWhy did you bring her here?โ€

He pauses, looking at me through the glass door. โ€œI was asked to bring her.โ€
