Chapter 0053
I flinched back.
He raised his hands in a placating gesture.
โSorry. I invaded your space. You clearly donโt like that. My bad. Personal boundaries arenโt exactly my forte.โ
Theodore moved to sit on the faded sofa beneath the window.
His intense green eyes flicked to the glass I was clutching.
โPlanning to use that as a weapon?โ
โNo... I wasnโt...โ The thought hadn't occurred to me until now. Maybe it wasn't a terrible idea.
โRelax, itโs not poison. Iโm not an idiot. I have no desire to have Alexander disembowel me. Itโs just water. From the dispenser.โ He gestured toward what I assumed was a kitchen.
I still didnโt take a sip.
โWhen were you unbound?โ Theodore asked out of the blue.
โWhat?โ
He pointed to his own ears. โThose are a dead giveaway.โ
โNot long ago,โ I mumbled.
โItโs a nightmare, right? The hearing is the worst part. Feels like your skull might split open. Do those help?โ He nodded at my earplugs.
โA little. Itโs... still overwhelmingly loud.โ
โTook me a solid year to adjust.โ
โYou were bound?โ I couldnโt hide the shock in my voice.
He nodded.
โAlpha Alexander did that?โ I knew his feelings about my binding. I couldnโt picture him doing it to someone else.
โGod, no. I was born into a different pack. I wasn't what they wanted. โToo clever for your own good.โ Thatโs what they always told me. When school started, Alexander and Sebastian were the only ones who didnโt torment me. They stood up for me. Brought me back here. Alexander let me stay.โ
Alpha Alexander had saved him. Given him a new life.
โThey bound you for being smart?โ
โRidiculous, isnโt it? Why were you bound?โ
โI...โ I wasnโt sure if Alpha Alexander wanted me sharing this. โI was framed for my parentsโ murder.โ I stuck to that story, avoiding the whole firstborn monster mess.
โDamn. People are seriously messed up.โ
โYou... you donโt have a mark.โ His neck was completely bare.
โNot every binding is broken the same way. For me, Alexander found someone who could undo it. The hearing... it does get better, eventually.โ He offered me a grin. โNow, come on. You need to practice.โ
I settled into the chair while he remained on the old sofa, respecting the space between us.
When Alexander returned, he entered without knocking.
He asked how I was progressing.
โSheโs getting there,โ Theodore answered.
I saw him wink. โBut like I said, she wonโt be a master reader by morning. Itโll take time. Daily practice.โ
โThatโs enough for today. Sheโll return tomorrow. Same time?โ
โSure. Maybe just bring your own water bottle next time. Iโd prefer Athena not suspect me of attempted poisoning.โ
Alexander raised an eyebrow at me as Theodore laughed.
I was utterly mortified.
We walked back across the grounds.
Alexanderโs hand was wrapped tightly around mine.
โDid... did you take me to him because... he was bound once?โ I whispered as his pace quickened.
โDid it help?โ
โNo... I...โ I pulled my hand free and stopped walking. My feelings were a jumbled mess.
His rough fingers gently lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.
โI thought it might help, knowing you arenโt alone in this. And Theodore is a good man. Iโd prefer you didnโt accuse him of poisoning you.โ
โI didnโt accuse him.โ
โYou considered it.โ
โI... You were reading my mind and you still left me there.โ Annoyance began to simmer inside me.
โI was right outside. If Theodore had tried anything, I would have known.โ
My scowl deepened. โYou were testing me?โ
