Chapter 0053

I flinched back.

He raised his hands in a placating gesture.

โ€œSorry. I invaded your space. You clearly donโ€™t like that. My bad. Personal boundaries arenโ€™t exactly my forte.โ€

Theodore moved to sit on the faded sofa beneath the window.

His intense green eyes flicked to the glass I was clutching.

โ€œPlanning to use that as a weapon?โ€

โ€œNo... I wasnโ€™t...โ€ The thought hadn't occurred to me until now. Maybe it wasn't a terrible idea.

โ€œRelax, itโ€™s not poison. Iโ€™m not an idiot. I have no desire to have Alexander disembowel me. Itโ€™s just water. From the dispenser.โ€ He gestured toward what I assumed was a kitchen.

I still didnโ€™t take a sip.

โ€œWhen were you unbound?โ€ Theodore asked out of the blue.

โ€œWhat?โ€

He pointed to his own ears. โ€œThose are a dead giveaway.โ€

โ€œNot long ago,โ€ I mumbled.

โ€œItโ€™s a nightmare, right? The hearing is the worst part. Feels like your skull might split open. Do those help?โ€ He nodded at my earplugs.

โ€œA little. Itโ€™s... still overwhelmingly loud.โ€

โ€œTook me a solid year to adjust.โ€

โ€œYou were bound?โ€ I couldnโ€™t hide the shock in my voice.

He nodded.

โ€œAlpha Alexander did that?โ€ I knew his feelings about my binding. I couldnโ€™t picture him doing it to someone else.

โ€œGod, no. I was born into a different pack. I wasn't what they wanted. โ€˜Too clever for your own good.โ€™ Thatโ€™s what they always told me. When school started, Alexander and Sebastian were the only ones who didnโ€™t torment me. They stood up for me. Brought me back here. Alexander let me stay.โ€

Alpha Alexander had saved him. Given him a new life.

โ€œThey bound you for being smart?โ€

โ€œRidiculous, isnโ€™t it? Why were you bound?โ€

โ€œI...โ€ I wasnโ€™t sure if Alpha Alexander wanted me sharing this. โ€œI was framed for my parentsโ€™ murder.โ€ I stuck to that story, avoiding the whole firstborn monster mess.

โ€œDamn. People are seriously messed up.โ€

โ€œYou... you donโ€™t have a mark.โ€ His neck was completely bare.

โ€œNot every binding is broken the same way. For me, Alexander found someone who could undo it. The hearing... it does get better, eventually.โ€ He offered me a grin. โ€œNow, come on. You need to practice.โ€

I settled into the chair while he remained on the old sofa, respecting the space between us.

When Alexander returned, he entered without knocking.

He asked how I was progressing.

โ€œSheโ€™s getting there,โ€ Theodore answered.

I saw him wink. โ€œBut like I said, she wonโ€™t be a master reader by morning. Itโ€™ll take time. Daily practice.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough for today. Sheโ€™ll return tomorrow. Same time?โ€

โ€œSure. Maybe just bring your own water bottle next time. Iโ€™d prefer Athena not suspect me of attempted poisoning.โ€

Alexander raised an eyebrow at me as Theodore laughed.

I was utterly mortified.

We walked back across the grounds.

Alexanderโ€™s hand was wrapped tightly around mine.

โ€œDid... did you take me to him because... he was bound once?โ€ I whispered as his pace quickened.

โ€œDid it help?โ€

โ€œNo... I...โ€ I pulled my hand free and stopped walking. My feelings were a jumbled mess.

His rough fingers gently lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.

โ€œI thought it might help, knowing you arenโ€™t alone in this. And Theodore is a good man. Iโ€™d prefer you didnโ€™t accuse him of poisoning you.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t accuse him.โ€

โ€œYou considered it.โ€

โ€œI... You were reading my mind and you still left me there.โ€ Annoyance began to simmer inside me.

โ€œI was right outside. If Theodore had tried anything, I would have known.โ€

My scowl deepened. โ€œYou were testing me?โ€
