Chapter 0269

โ€œItโ€™s not that simple. But sheโ€™s handling it.โ€

He leans on the counter, and my thoughts instantly drift somewhere inappropriate. I didnโ€™t mean toโ€”I blame Sebastian for leaving me so deprived.

A low growl rumbles behind me. That warning again. Sebastianโ€™s hand presses firmly against my stomach, reminding me who I belong to. Lucas ignores it completely, hoisting himself up to sit on the counter.

โ€œPacks always complicate things. Lifeโ€™s easier when you only have to worry about yourself.โ€

โ€œThis is pointless,โ€ Sebastian mutters. โ€œHe wonโ€™t help us, and we canโ€™t give him what he wants. Letโ€™s go.โ€ He turns me toward the door.

โ€œYou sure about that, Blondie?โ€

I glance back. Lucas is grinning. โ€œPlenty of people are willing to deal if thereโ€™s something in it for them. Me included. I can help you track your Lycans. Iโ€™ll point out which ones are still Rogueโ€”and I get to kill those. You get your intel. I get my fun.โ€

โ€œWhat if we donโ€™t need to hunt?โ€ I say softly. If he can really tell the difference, we might not need the Wolfsbane Toxin.

โ€œWhereโ€™s the fucking fun in that?โ€ He looks genuinely disappointed.

โ€œCome back to the pack with us. Iโ€™ll explain everything on the way.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m nobodyโ€™s pack dog.โ€

โ€œI thought you wanted to kill Rogues?โ€ Sometimes itโ€™s better to keep a madman close rather than let him roam free with information about us.

Surprisingly, he agrees faster than I expected. That might be a bad sign. Or maybe the chance to slaughter Rogues was too tempting to refuse.

Theodore and I wait in the kitchen while Sebastian follows Lucas around the house as he gathers weapons.

โ€œDid you link Alexander?โ€ I ask Theodore as another duffel bag hits the floor. Seven bags already. This guy is packing serious firepower.

โ€œDone.โ€ Lucas drops a fifteenth bag. Heโ€™s changed into jeans and a clean white tee. โ€œLetโ€™s roll. But the girl rides with me. Just in case.โ€

โ€œIf you touch herโ€”โ€ Sebastian starts.

โ€œWhatโ€™re you gonna do, Blondie? Sheโ€™ll be dead before you even step out of your car. Simple. Donโ€™t cross me, she lives.โ€

Despite Sebastianโ€™s clear frustration, I agree.

We help Lucas load his truck. Before I climb in, Sebastian pulls me close. His lips meet mine. โ€œDonโ€™t do anything reckless. I donโ€™t trust him.โ€

I nod and slip into the passenger seat. Sebastian shoots Lucas one last glare.

Lucas doesnโ€™t ask me anything during the drive. He adjusts the music a few times but mostly stews in silence.

Shit. He hates Seraphina.

โ€œThereโ€™s something you should know,โ€ I blurt out.

โ€œKnew it.โ€ He pulls a handgun from his belt and aims it at me.

โ€œItโ€™s not what you think. You were rightโ€”we didnโ€™t tell you everything. But not to hide it.โ€ The words rush out. โ€œThe female Alpha looks exactly like Seraphina. The only difference is Athena has blue eyes.โ€

โ€œIs this a joke? Did Seraphina feed you this crap?โ€

โ€œI swear, Iโ€™ve seen them together.โ€ I have maybe one second to convince him. And no proof. Think!

โ€œDo you have a phone?โ€

I memorized the pack office number. Alexander made me do it when I first joined Obsidian Howlโ€”in case of emergencies.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œSo you can hear her voice. She sounds nothing like Seraphina.โ€

For a moment, he lowers the gun and pulls out his phone. I dial the number. Alexander answers.

I put it on speaker. โ€œAlexander, is Athena awake?โ€

โ€œBrianna, is everything alright?โ€

โ€œI need to speak to Athena. Itโ€™s urgent. Weโ€™re almost at the pack.โ€ All hell will break loose if Lucas thinks theyโ€™re the same person. He has enough weapons to take down half the pack. Maybe more.

โ€œHello? Brianna, is that you? Why didnโ€™t you just link me?โ€ Athenaโ€™s voice comes through the phone.

The car ahead with Sebastian and Theodore slows. Alexander must be linking them. Sebastian will know my heart is racing again.

โ€œAsk her something,โ€ I whisper to Lucas.

He reaches over and ends the call.

โ€œWhy did you do that? I was trying to prove who she is.โ€

โ€œI heard exactly who she is.โ€

โ€œYou can tell, just like that?โ€

โ€œJust like that,โ€ he repeats.

โ€œBut how?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a gift.โ€

โ€œShe only said ten words.โ€

โ€œIt was enough.โ€

Why do I feel like all my organs just dropped through the floor?
