Chapter 0079

โ€œWe said no.โ€

โ€œNo, theโ€ฆ the witches?โ€

โ€œMadame Zora claimed you were powerful. She said sheโ€™d never encountered anything like it. She bound you twice and refused to do it again. That deceitful witch!โ€ My fist slammed against the desk, making Athena flinch.

Athena hugged her knees tighter, her wide blue eyes fixed on me.

โ€œShe knew the risks. She wouldnโ€™t bind you a third time. Thatโ€™s what she meant when she refused.โ€ Rage simmered inside me.

โ€œI thoughtโ€ฆโ€ Athena whispered, โ€œI thought she told you everything.โ€

โ€œShe usually does. Sooner or later.โ€

โ€˜Too many are testing us.โ€™ Titan growled. โ€˜Itโ€™s time we reminded them who leads this pack!โ€™

I glanced over at Athena. Her face was resting on her knees, eyes closed.

Is she asleep? Titan asked.

โ€œAthena?โ€ I had just been speaking to her.

She didnโ€™t stir when I tried to rouse her.

Sheโ€™s been sleeping too much lately. Titan noted. โ€˜Have you seen how tired she gets?โ€™

Sheโ€™s still adjusting. She was exhausted. Her body is recovering.

โ€˜Stop lying to yourself. Youโ€™ve asked her daily if sheโ€™s feeling alright!โ€™

I pressed the back of my hand to her forehead. Heat radiated from her skin. It was new. I hadnโ€™t felt it when I held her earlier.

โ€œAthena?โ€ She didnโ€™t respond.

โ€œAthena?โ€ I shook her shoulders gently. Her legs slipped down, her head lolled back. Her heartbeat was steady. It made no sense. Why wouldnโ€™t she wake?

ISABELLA! I linked my sister, demanding her immediate presence. She arrived within minutes and rushed to Athenaโ€™s side.

After a quick examination, she found nothing wrong.

โ€œThen explain why my mate is burning up?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ She frantically rolled up Athenaโ€™s sleeves, inspecting her arms.

โ€œWhat are you looking for?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure. An injection site, a bite mark, maybe an allergic reaction?โ€

โ€œShe can heal herself.โ€

Athena coughed in her unconscious state. A trickle of bright red blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.

I forced her mouth open. I smelled the blood before I saw it. Her mouth began filling with it. If I hadnโ€™t leaned her forward, she would have choked.

โ€œShit, shit, shit. What did she eat?โ€ Isabella muttered as she continued searching Athenaโ€™s arms.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. She hasnโ€™t had anything since we entered the office.โ€

I scanned the room. I looked for anything she might have touched, anything out of place. Nothing seemed unusual.

โ€œI need her at the hospital, Alexander. I canโ€™t handle this here.โ€

I lifted Athena, keeping her on her side to prevent choking. There were many things we could heal from. Suffocation wasnโ€™t one of them.

By the time we reached the hospital, Athenaโ€™s heart was racing. The constant hum made it difficult to distinguish individual beats.

โ€œWe need to undress her.โ€ Isabella said urgently. โ€œSomething must have happened.โ€

โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t be that foolish.โ€ I muttered, helping remove Athenaโ€™s top.

โ€œWho?โ€

โ€œCaleb. Athena released him. He grabbed her wrist. Then he threatened her.โ€

โ€œWhoa. Thatโ€™s a lot to unpack at once.โ€ Isabella murmured as she tugged off Athenaโ€™s jeans.

โ€œWhere did he grab her?โ€

โ€œHer wrist.โ€

Isabella checked her wrists again. There was nothing. No marks. No signs of anything unusual.

Then I saw it. A small raised bump near her shoulder. As I looked at Athena, blood seeped from her ears. I knew instantly what sheโ€™d been injected with. This shouldnโ€™t be happening.

Isabella quickly extracted fluid from the bump. Clear liquid mixed with a small amount of blood. โ€œIs that what I think it is?โ€

โ€œWolfsbane Toxin.โ€
