Chapter 0458
Zachary stepped outside, a scarf masking the lower half of his face.
Soot and ash smudged his skin.
โI assumed youโd be with Charlotte.โ
He tugged the scarf down, revealing a grim expression.
โAthena collected her. Her biological father walked away.โ
His irritation was palpable. I understood completely. I could never abandon my sons like that.
Zachary glanced back at the damaged pack house. โIโm sorry,โ he muttered.
โEveryone survived. Thatโs what matters.โ
โDo you know whoโs responsible?โ
โYes. And itโs still hard to believe.โ
He raised an eyebrow, waiting.
โLiam.โ
โThe boy who attacked Lottie? That little brat?โ
โYes. Iโm on my way to inform his father now.โ
โI rarely agree with Luc, but that kid needed serious discipline long ago.โ
โThe issue is, heโs run off.โ
Caleb opened the door, his eyes scanning behind me. Clearly expecting his son. โYouโre alone?โ
โWe need to discuss Liam.โ
โWas he caught in the explosion? Iโd know, right?โ
โItโs more serious. Perhaps I should come inside.โ
He stepped back, allowing me entry. Seraphina sat at the table playing a game with Calebโs youngest son, Noah. Her dark eyes flicked to me briefly before returning to the game.
โNoah, Seraphina, please go to your rooms,โ Caleb requested.
โActually, Seraphina should stay. She might provide useful insight.โ
A flash of fear crossed her features. She tried to hide it, poorly.
โIs Zoe here?โ I asked. Liamโs mother needed to know her sonโs actions.
โShe went into the city with others. Took the baby,โ Caleb informed me.
I waited until Noahโs footsteps faded upstairs. โThereโs no easy way to say this. Liam caused the explosion you heard.โ
Caleb stared, speechless. His mouth opened and closed several times. Disbelief or shock, I couldnโt tell. No parent wants to hear their child is a terrorist.
โYou locked him in the dungeon? Heโs just a child.โ
โNo. He blew up the pack house and fled. Zachary and others are searching for him.โ
โHe blew up the pack house?โ Seraphina interjected. โIs everyone alright?โ
I was slightly surprised she showed concern for others. โYes, no one was injured. Levi gave him the means to do it.โ
โLevi reached him?โ
โHe told Athena that Levi promised him a better life. Made him an offer.โ
โNo.โ Caleb muttered. โNo, youโre wrong. He wouldnโt do this. He wouldnโt fall for that.โ
โCaleb, you found me outside his room because I feared heโd harm someone. You know somethingโs been troubling him,โ Seraphina said softly.
โHeโs a child,โ Caleb frowned.
โSo was I. But what heโs doingโฆ itโs far worse than anything I ever did. I never destroyed a home.โ
Caleb sank onto a wooden chair at the table. His hands clenched into fists. One fist slammed down on the table, making Seraphina jump.
โWhere would he go?โ I asked.
โHeโs eight,โ Caleb protested.
โHe doesnโt have friends,โ Seraphina murmured, staring at her hands. โHe only goes to school or out with Zoe and Caleb. He must have met Levi somewhere.โ
โI have to find him,โ Caleb frowned. โI have to bring him back and make him understand.โ He stood. โZoe will be devastated if another child goes rogue.โ His gaze briefly touched Seraphina.
โYou wonโt find him,โ Seraphina whispered, still focused on her hands. โIf Levi promised to help Liam, heโd be waiting. Levi never breaks promises. He drilled that into me repeatedly.โ
โYou think Levi was waiting for him?โ
Seraphina nodded. โLiam did Leviโs dirty work. Levi will reward him. A prize, something Liam wants. Itโll make Liam feel justified, even though he knew it was wrong.โ
Her eyes lifted to meet mine. โThink about it. Contracts provide satisfaction, Alexander. You offer something in return. Protection. Alliance. Whatever suits your needs. Itโs probably the same for Liam. A sort of contract, but it doesnโt truly benefit my brother. It benefits Levi.โ
