Chapter 0073
Athena
โDead?โ I whisper.
Theodore rubs his chin thoughtfully. โFrom my understanding, that side of you shouldnโt survive the bindings.โ He glances at Alpha Alexander. โWe all know bindings are the worst fate for a Wolf. It traps their other half. Itโs the most severe punishmentโI would know. Iโm living proof. But according to these ancient texts, she shouldnโt have lived through it.โ
โWell, sheโs clearly standing right here,โ Beta Sebastian snaps. โAnd sheโs stronger now than the day we brought her home.โ
โMaybe the bindings werenโt done correctly?โ Theodore suggests with a shrug.
โYou really believe the Witches messed it upโfour separate times?โ Sebastian questions sharply.
โItโs a possibility.โ
Alpha Alexander frowns but doesnโt look at me. Maybe he canโt bear to see the panic written all over my face. I want him to say somethingโto acknowledge what Theodore is implying. Or maybe heโs finally realizing Iโm not worthy of being his mate.
โOr maybe marking her saved her,โ Sebastian mumbles under his breath.
โPerhaps,โ Theodore replies.
I look up at Alpha Alexander. Heโs reading the book Theodore handed him, his fingers tracing the words as his eyes move rapidly across the page. Absorbing every detail.
โAlpha Alexander?โ I whisper.
He doesnโt respond. Instead, he slams the book shut.
โThis isnโt helpful right now.โ He shoves it back toward Theodore. โShe canโt be the only one. And why didnโt you tell me you had information on Lycansโor whatever theyโre called?โ
โThese books are ancient, Alexander. I thought they were mythsโjust stories. I never expected to meet a living one. Iโve been here twelve years, and nothing like this has ever crossed our path. How was I supposed to know it would become relevant?โ
โYou werenโt,โ Sebastian cuts in before Alpha Alexander can speak.
โAm Iโฆ am I going to die?โ
All three of them turn to look at me. Yet no one answers. Tears prick at my eyes, and I force them back.
For years, I believed death would be better than living as a slave. But that was before Alpha Alexander came into my life.
โPreferably not,โ Alpha Alexander says, offering a tight-lipped smile that doesnโt reach his eyes. Is he already expecting the worst?
โI needโฆ I need some air.โ I turn away from them and hurry outside.
None of them try to stop me. Itโs as if all three are already waiting for my impending death.
I lean against the wall, focusing on my racing heart. I will it to slow down, just for a moment.
I hurry across the grounds. People ignore me, and Iโm grateful. No one tries to speak to meโnot until I reach the back door of the house.
โFinally. Just you and me.โ
My eyes lock with strange gray ones.
โI assume you know who I am?โ she spits.
โG-Genevieve.โ
She laughs mockingly at my stutter. โDo you always do that? You sound like a child.โ
I keep my mouth shut. I canโt help the stutterโit happens when Iโm nervous. She reminds me so much of Victoria.
โHow the hell are you his mate?โ She plants her hands on her hips. I decide itโs better not to speak.
โCat got your tongue?โ she taunts. โSo tell me, what is a Lycan? The others say you become part Wolf. Is that true?โ
โI d-donโt know.โ
โYou donโt know? What, have you never shifted?โ
When I donโt answer, she laughs coldly.
โYou wonโt last long here. Alexander will see what a mistake you are. Heโll reject you, just like he did with the others. Only I get to survive. Only I deserve to be by his side.โ
