Chapter 0073

Athena

โ€œDead?โ€ I whisper.

Theodore rubs his chin thoughtfully. โ€œFrom my understanding, that side of you shouldnโ€™t survive the bindings.โ€ He glances at Alpha Alexander. โ€œWe all know bindings are the worst fate for a Wolf. It traps their other half. Itโ€™s the most severe punishmentโ€”I would know. Iโ€™m living proof. But according to these ancient texts, she shouldnโ€™t have lived through it.โ€

โ€œWell, sheโ€™s clearly standing right here,โ€ Beta Sebastian snaps. โ€œAnd sheโ€™s stronger now than the day we brought her home.โ€

โ€œMaybe the bindings werenโ€™t done correctly?โ€ Theodore suggests with a shrug.

โ€œYou really believe the Witches messed it upโ€”four separate times?โ€ Sebastian questions sharply.

โ€œItโ€™s a possibility.โ€

Alpha Alexander frowns but doesnโ€™t look at me. Maybe he canโ€™t bear to see the panic written all over my face. I want him to say somethingโ€”to acknowledge what Theodore is implying. Or maybe heโ€™s finally realizing Iโ€™m not worthy of being his mate.

โ€œOr maybe marking her saved her,โ€ Sebastian mumbles under his breath.

โ€œPerhaps,โ€ Theodore replies.

I look up at Alpha Alexander. Heโ€™s reading the book Theodore handed him, his fingers tracing the words as his eyes move rapidly across the page. Absorbing every detail.

โ€œAlpha Alexander?โ€ I whisper.

He doesnโ€™t respond. Instead, he slams the book shut.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t helpful right now.โ€ He shoves it back toward Theodore. โ€œShe canโ€™t be the only one. And why didnโ€™t you tell me you had information on Lycansโ€”or whatever theyโ€™re called?โ€

โ€œThese books are ancient, Alexander. I thought they were mythsโ€”just stories. I never expected to meet a living one. Iโ€™ve been here twelve years, and nothing like this has ever crossed our path. How was I supposed to know it would become relevant?โ€

โ€œYou werenโ€™t,โ€ Sebastian cuts in before Alpha Alexander can speak.

โ€œAm Iโ€ฆ am I going to die?โ€

All three of them turn to look at me. Yet no one answers. Tears prick at my eyes, and I force them back.

For years, I believed death would be better than living as a slave. But that was before Alpha Alexander came into my life.

โ€œPreferably not,โ€ Alpha Alexander says, offering a tight-lipped smile that doesnโ€™t reach his eyes. Is he already expecting the worst?

โ€œI needโ€ฆ I need some air.โ€ I turn away from them and hurry outside.

None of them try to stop me. Itโ€™s as if all three are already waiting for my impending death.

I lean against the wall, focusing on my racing heart. I will it to slow down, just for a moment.

I hurry across the grounds. People ignore me, and Iโ€™m grateful. No one tries to speak to meโ€”not until I reach the back door of the house.

โ€œFinally. Just you and me.โ€

My eyes lock with strange gray ones.

โ€œI assume you know who I am?โ€ she spits.

โ€œG-Genevieve.โ€

She laughs mockingly at my stutter. โ€œDo you always do that? You sound like a child.โ€

I keep my mouth shut. I canโ€™t help the stutterโ€”it happens when Iโ€™m nervous. She reminds me so much of Victoria.

โ€œHow the hell are you his mate?โ€ She plants her hands on her hips. I decide itโ€™s better not to speak.

โ€œCat got your tongue?โ€ she taunts. โ€œSo tell me, what is a Lycan? The others say you become part Wolf. Is that true?โ€

โ€œI d-donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know? What, have you never shifted?โ€

When I donโ€™t answer, she laughs coldly.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t last long here. Alexander will see what a mistake you are. Heโ€™ll reject you, just like he did with the others. Only I get to survive. Only I deserve to be by his side.โ€
