“You can read my thoughts?” I whisper, the concept still unsettling.

“I simply pay close attention.” He moves closer, his lips almost meeting mine when the door violently bursts open.

“What the hell, Isabella?!” Alpha Alexander snarls.

Isabella stands breathless, her dark hair disheveled. “We have a major situation!”

Alpha Alexander turns from me with an eye roll. “What now?”

“She’s here!”

I glance between them. “Who?”

“Are you absolutely sure?” Alpha Alexander questions Isabella.

“One hundred percent. She’s at the hospital right now. And she’s absolutely furious.”

“Who?” I repeat, noticing Isabella’s concern while Alpha Alexander’s face darkens with pure rage. His crimson eyes seem deeper than usual. Perhaps Titan was communicating with him?

They continue talking as if I’m invisible.

“I told her you were hunting to buy time.”

“Did you mention Athena?”

“I enjoy testing your brides, but I’d rather walk into fire than deal with that one.”

Another bride?

Alpha Alexander spins toward me. “Former bride. I absorbed her parents’ pack years ago.”

“The only one who survived.” Isabella mutters. “Genevieve.”

“Stay with Athena. I’ll send Sebastian too.” He gives my cheek a quick kiss and exits, leaving the door wide open.

“Who is she?” I ask.

“He told you, ex-bride.” Isabella smiles weakly, trying to downplay the urgency despite her dramatic entrance.

“I know but… you seemed…”

“It’s nothing. Alexander will handle it. She’s shown up before.”

“What does she want?”

“Uh… she probably heard about you.” She tidies Alpha Alexander’s desk, straightening papers.

“Me?” Why would she come because of me?

“If I tell you, please stay calm.”

I snort. Everything makes me panic lately.

“Genevieve was around the third or fourth bride, I can’t recall exactly. She was obsessively in love with my brother to the point of betraying her own family. Not that he asked her to. But when the contract ended, Alexander chose not to mark her. He didn’t believe she was the one.”

“So he let her live?”

“The only one besides you.” She smiles as if that’s a good thing.

“Why is she here?” My instincts scream to hate her. I’ve never met her, but I despise the thought of Alpha Alexander alone with her.

“She appears shortly after a new bride arrives. Reminding Alexander why he pursued her years ago. She desperately wants him back. She killed her own true mate to be with him.”

“Killed her true mate?” I need confirmation.

Isabella reties her dark hair and nods. “She brought him here. Then, to prove her love, she stabbed her mate through the heart. Believing it would please Alexander.”

“It didn’t?”

“He admired her courage, but no.”

“And he allows her to come here?”

“Technically, since he absorbed her parents’ pack, she belongs to Obsidian Howl.”

“What should I do?”

“We wait.” Beta Sebastian enters, handing me a juice bottle. “And hope she’s just passing through.”

“What if she demands to meet her?” Isabella asks.

Beta Sebastian smirks at me. “It’s different now. Alexander has claimed Athena. We do everything to prevent Genevieve from touching her.”

Touching me??

“You mean… she’s here to kill me?”
