Chapter 0229
โIs that so?โ Julianโs eyebrow arched sharply. He brought his fingers to his lips, tasting the lingering evidence of my arousal.
โYouโve made your intentions perfectly clear. You want me as your mate.โ I muttered, yanking on a pair of training leggings. โIโm not prepared.โ
Damn. Poor word choice.
โEvery day you delay my claim, we gamble with fate. We risk encountering our true destined mates. Then itโs over. When will you be ready, Seraphina? Six months? A year? Five? You know we are good together.โ
โBack off!โ I snarled, my teeth clenched. โAnd Iโve searched the entire world! My true mate doesnโt exist!โ
โAre you frightened? Is that it?โ
I froze mid-motion, pulling my workout top over my head. โFrightened? You think Iโm scared?โ
โSomething is holding you back!โ His voice snapped like a whip. โEvery time I believe this is real. That Iโve finally found someone I can be with. You throw it all back in my face.โ
โAlright, letโs say you mark me. What happens when I die? My work doesnโt guarantee my survival, Julian. You could mark me tonight, and I could be dead tomorrow. Do you truly want to lose another mate?โ
I knew I was deflecting. But he wasnโt ready for the raw truth. I snatched my yoga mat and strode purposefully toward the door.
โWhere are you going?โ he demanded.
โTo fucking work out. Is that acceptable to you?!โ My anger was a live wire. Why did he always push? Why did I constantly let him cross every line?
Any other man would be in a grave if he tried half the things Julian did.
I unfurled the mat with a sharp flick. He appeared instantly. Leaning naked against the doorframe, his muscular arms crossed over his broad chest.
โI make you feel something youโve never felt before. Donโt I?โ
I jabbed my headphones toward him and yanked them over my head, cutting him off. But he didnโt leave.
Ten minutes into my yoga flow, I ripped the headphones off. โYou think you know everything, Julian.โ
โI never said I did.โ He frowned deeply. โI donโt understand your resistance. We want the same things. We are good together. I know the mere thought of me with someone else puts you in a dark mood. Thatโs why you walk away.โ
โNo, itโs not.โ
โThen what arenโt you telling me? I can handle it. Iโm sure I can. Is it related to Athena and your father?โ
โNo.โ
His brow furrowed as he searched for another logical explanation. The tragic part was, heโd missed every clue. Clues I hadnโt deliberately shared, but ones that had slipped out during other conversations.
He stepped closer, taking my hands in his. โI can handle it. Whatever it is. We can solve it together, if it means you are finally mine and I am yours.โ
I stepped back, my stomach twisting into familiar, painful knotsโa feeling I hadnโt known since childhood. He was the only one who could evoke this in me. The only person who saw past my hardened shell.
โYou should probably put some clothes on,โ I sighed. Someone would find out eventually. It might as well be him.
โIโm fine.โ He moved to sit his bare ass on my sofa.
โYouโll probably want to leave after this. So you might as well be prepared.โ
He started to speak, then stopped himself. He retreated to the bedroom. He returned wearing a white tee and grey sweatpants. He settled onto the sofa with an eager smile, like a child waiting for Santa.
โJulian, havenโt you ever wondered how I know itโs so easy to kill Rogues?โ
โI assumed it was from years of intense training and practice.โ
I tried a different approach. โYou asked me why I never shift.โ
โYou mentioned control.โ
Could he truly be this blind to what I was implying?
โJulian, I was a Rogue.โ
