Chapter 0350

Lucas Adler

I stand up just before his face reappears.

Hannah stays behind me, quickly buttoning her shirt.

The guy stares directly at me.

Iโ€™m not an idiotโ€”I know he can smell her arousal all over the air.

But he doesnโ€™t speak.

He just turns and walks away, fists clenched tightly at his sides.

My hand instinctively reaches for my gun.

Hannah stops me.

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ she says quietly. โ€œItโ€™ll draw more attention. Iโ€™ll talk to him myself.โ€

I grab her wrist as she tries to move past me.

โ€œYouโ€™re staying away from him.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t get to decide that for me, Luc.โ€ She pulls her hand free and rushes after him.

I hear her calling his nameโ€”Ash, Owen Carterโ€”until her voice fades into the distance.

Damn it.

If that idiot doesnโ€™t keep his mouth shut, theyโ€™ll all think Iโ€™ve gone soft.

The Lycans will believe they have leverage over me.

Iโ€™ll become a laughingstock among other Hunters.

I need to speak with Athena or Brianna. Theyโ€™re the only ones who know the truth.

I make my way out of the forest.

Thereโ€™s no sign of Hannah or that bastard anywhere.

I canโ€™t even catch her scent.

Maybe she took a different path when I wasnโ€™t paying attention.

The hospital is closest.

I head there, hoping Brianna is alone.

Luckily, she is.

She quickly wipes her tears when she sees me and forces a smile.

โ€œShould I get Theodore or Sebastian for you?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I say. โ€œItโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œCome in, then.โ€ She gestures me inside.

โ€œI want to apologize,โ€ I murmur.

Brianna didnโ€™t deserve any of this.

Sheโ€™s different from the other Lycans.

I knew sheโ€™d gone Rogue, but it wasnโ€™t the same.

Her soul is fractured, much like Athenaโ€™s.

I just never told anyone.

And now thereโ€™s another crack working its way through her spirit.

I feel responsible.

I may not have pulled the trigger, but it was my weapon that caused the damage.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t shoot me,โ€ she says softly. โ€œZachary told me. Though for a second, I really thought it was you.โ€

I nod.

โ€œBut thatโ€™s not why youโ€™re here, is it?โ€

I run a hand over my stubble and press my lips together.

I can still taste Hannah.

โ€œIโ€™m not the kind of person who asks for help. Or advice.โ€ The words feel foreign. Almost shameful. โ€œBut you and Athena are the only Lycans I can stand.โ€

โ€œAh,โ€ she says. โ€œThis is about Hannah.โ€

โ€œHow did you know?โ€

โ€œIt was either that or something to do with Charlotte and Zacharyโ€™s bond.โ€ She shifts on the bed, wincing in pain.

โ€œHannah and I have been meeting up.โ€ I leave it there and wait.

She smiles, then clutches her stomach with a grimace. โ€œI wish you wouldnโ€™t make me laugh. It hurts.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t meant to be funny,โ€ I grumble.

โ€œOkay, so youโ€™re meeting up. And?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s a Lycan.โ€

โ€œYeah, we established that already,โ€ she mutters sarcastically.

โ€œThis was a mistake.โ€ I stand to leave.

โ€œDonโ€™t go. Please. This takes my mind offโ€ฆ other things.โ€ Her sigh is heavy with the same sadness I felt when I entered.

I stare at her for a moment before dropping back into the chair.

โ€œSo?โ€ she prompts.

โ€œI canโ€™t get her out of my head. But I also canโ€™t get past what she is. Or the problems itโ€™ll cause.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a Lycan,โ€ she points out.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to fuck you,โ€ I snap.

She rolls her eyes. A far cry from how she looked at me that night she showed up at my place.

If I remember right, her mate had to keep reminding her he existed too.

โ€œFair enough,โ€ she says, frowning. โ€œBut youโ€™re a Hunter of Rogues, right?โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter. If theyโ€™re a problem, I deal with it. Youโ€™ve seen that.โ€

โ€œIs Hannah a problem?โ€ She puffs out her cheeks as I shake my head.

โ€œThen why not just claim her? Sheโ€™s your mate. And from the sound of it, sheโ€™s not being forced. Yes, sheโ€™s a Lycanโ€”but she canโ€™t shift. What are the odds she goes Rogue?โ€

โ€œWhat if I kill her?โ€

โ€œWhat if you donโ€™t? Look, Sebastian wasnโ€™t my biggest fan either. When he marked me, it was an accident. He struggled with what I am, just like youโ€™re struggling with Hannah. But he couldnโ€™t stay away. In the end, youโ€™re the only one who needs to care who your mate is. Screw everyone else.โ€
