Chapter 0350
Lucas Adler
I stand up just before his face reappears.
Hannah stays behind me, quickly buttoning her shirt.
The guy stares directly at me.
Iโm not an idiotโI know he can smell her arousal all over the air.
But he doesnโt speak.
He just turns and walks away, fists clenched tightly at his sides.
My hand instinctively reaches for my gun.
Hannah stops me.
โDonโt,โ she says quietly. โItโll draw more attention. Iโll talk to him myself.โ
I grab her wrist as she tries to move past me.
โYouโre staying away from him.โ
โYou donโt get to decide that for me, Luc.โ She pulls her hand free and rushes after him.
I hear her calling his nameโAsh, Owen Carterโuntil her voice fades into the distance.
Damn it.
If that idiot doesnโt keep his mouth shut, theyโll all think Iโve gone soft.
The Lycans will believe they have leverage over me.
Iโll become a laughingstock among other Hunters.
I need to speak with Athena or Brianna. Theyโre the only ones who know the truth.
I make my way out of the forest.
Thereโs no sign of Hannah or that bastard anywhere.
I canโt even catch her scent.
Maybe she took a different path when I wasnโt paying attention.
The hospital is closest.
I head there, hoping Brianna is alone.
Luckily, she is.
She quickly wipes her tears when she sees me and forces a smile.
โShould I get Theodore or Sebastian for you?โ
โNo,โ I say. โItโs fine.โ
โCome in, then.โ She gestures me inside.
โI want to apologize,โ I murmur.
Brianna didnโt deserve any of this.
Sheโs different from the other Lycans.
I knew sheโd gone Rogue, but it wasnโt the same.
Her soul is fractured, much like Athenaโs.
I just never told anyone.
And now thereโs another crack working its way through her spirit.
I feel responsible.
I may not have pulled the trigger, but it was my weapon that caused the damage.
โYou didnโt shoot me,โ she says softly. โZachary told me. Though for a second, I really thought it was you.โ
I nod.
โBut thatโs not why youโre here, is it?โ
I run a hand over my stubble and press my lips together.
I can still taste Hannah.
โIโm not the kind of person who asks for help. Or advice.โ The words feel foreign. Almost shameful. โBut you and Athena are the only Lycans I can stand.โ
โAh,โ she says. โThis is about Hannah.โ
โHow did you know?โ
โIt was either that or something to do with Charlotte and Zacharyโs bond.โ She shifts on the bed, wincing in pain.
โHannah and I have been meeting up.โ I leave it there and wait.
She smiles, then clutches her stomach with a grimace. โI wish you wouldnโt make me laugh. It hurts.โ
โIt wasnโt meant to be funny,โ I grumble.
โOkay, so youโre meeting up. And?โ
โSheโs a Lycan.โ
โYeah, we established that already,โ she mutters sarcastically.
โThis was a mistake.โ I stand to leave.
โDonโt go. Please. This takes my mind offโฆ other things.โ Her sigh is heavy with the same sadness I felt when I entered.
I stare at her for a moment before dropping back into the chair.
โSo?โ she prompts.
โI canโt get her out of my head. But I also canโt get past what she is. Or the problems itโll cause.โ
โIโm a Lycan,โ she points out.
โI donโt want to fuck you,โ I snap.
She rolls her eyes. A far cry from how she looked at me that night she showed up at my place.
If I remember right, her mate had to keep reminding her he existed too.
โFair enough,โ she says, frowning. โBut youโre a Hunter of Rogues, right?โ
โDoesnโt matter. If theyโre a problem, I deal with it. Youโve seen that.โ
โIs Hannah a problem?โ She puffs out her cheeks as I shake my head.
โThen why not just claim her? Sheโs your mate. And from the sound of it, sheโs not being forced. Yes, sheโs a Lycanโbut she canโt shift. What are the odds she goes Rogue?โ
โWhat if I kill her?โ
โWhat if you donโt? Look, Sebastian wasnโt my biggest fan either. When he marked me, it was an accident. He struggled with what I am, just like youโre struggling with Hannah. But he couldnโt stay away. In the end, youโre the only one who needs to care who your mate is. Screw everyone else.โ
