Chapter 0390

Athena

โ€œThat sounds like pure fantasy to me.โ€ I shake my head, struggling to process Theodoreโ€™s words.

โ€œThere was a time none of us believed in Lycans either.โ€ He gestures toward the window where Lycans are training. Zachary ordered them to intensify their drillsโ€”all to protect me. โ€œWeโ€™ve learned a great deal since then.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s right,โ€ Alexander says. โ€œRemember what happened when that first Lycan emerged from the forest, right over there? You hid. We tore it apart because we had no idea what it was.โ€

'Heโ€™s right,' Nyx murmurs.

'How would you know? You werenโ€™t even here!'

'I have access to all your memories,' she huffs.

โ€œSo youโ€™re saying heโ€™s a Witchโ€ฆ but heโ€™s not working with one?โ€ I ask. Madame Zora is the only Witch Iโ€™ve ever met, and sheโ€™s gone now. Nothing like this.

Alexander nods. โ€œWitches vary. They arenโ€™t uniform like Lycans or Wolvesโ€”or so Iโ€™ve heard. Different strengths. Different abilities. And theyโ€™re damn near impossible to find. Some, like Madame Zora, work for Wolvesโ€”for a price. Others act like theyโ€™re above everyone. No idea why, given how few remain.โ€

โ€œSeraphina said they donโ€™t work with Lycans, but Evelyn is one.โ€ Iโ€™m trying hard to connect the dots, but it feels like a giant piece is still missing. Something none of us can see.

โ€œDid Luc piss off any Witches? Is that why Levi is doing this?โ€ I ask.

โ€œI already asked,โ€ Alexander tells me. โ€œHe said he doesnโ€™t deal with Witches. They never interested himโ€ฆ until now.โ€

โ€œBecause of Hannah?โ€

He nods.

โ€œHeโ€™s with her at the hospital right now,โ€ Theodore adds. โ€œSheโ€™s slowly becoming more lucid. When sheโ€™s ready, we might get more answers.โ€

I nod, rocking gently. Evrin clings to me like he has all morning. Almost as if he senses somethingโ€™s wrong. Alexander offers to take him, but Evrin just holds me tighter.

โ€œSo heโ€™s a Witch who faked being a Lycanโ€ฆ and heโ€™s strong enough to form a link with me?โ€

โ€œI know it sounds far-fetched,โ€ Theodore agrees. โ€œBut it fits.โ€

'No,' Nyx mutters. 'No, it fucking doesnโ€™t.'

โ€œWhatโ€™s our next move?โ€ I ask, keeping myโ€”and Nyxโ€™sโ€”thoughts private.

โ€œWe need Evelyn to break,โ€ Alexander says, leaning over the cot to check on a sleeping Logan.

โ€œShe didnโ€™t even realize I could scent her,โ€ I reply. โ€œShe kept going, spinning her story about what Levi did to her, even as her scent gave her away. I expected her to shift, but she just played the victimโ€”like we were wrong for tying her up.โ€

โ€œSeraphina will try to get information out of her,โ€ Alexander tells me.

'Why?' Nyx mutters in my head.

โ€œWhy would she do that?โ€ I ask.

โ€œI asked her. She feels just as betrayed learning the truth about Evelyn. I donโ€™t think sheโ€™s doing it to help usโ€”more to satisfy her own anger at being deceived. She knows she could die either way, and she still agreed.โ€ Alexanderโ€™s crimson eyes linger on me.

โ€œI thought you mightโ€™ve killed her.โ€

โ€œI considered it. But with everything happening, I figured we could use her. To do that, weโ€™ll need to feed her. Bring her out once a day so she can report whatever Evelyn is plotting.โ€

โ€œIf we bring her out, we have to bring Evelyn out too. Otherwise, sheโ€™ll suspect something,โ€ Theodore adds. โ€œIt seems like Levi has some attachment to Evelyn, right?โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ I sigh. โ€œOr it could be the other way around. Luc thinks thereโ€™s a good chance Evelyn is running the show.โ€

I notice how Alexander is looking at me. Heโ€™s been wary of Theodore since the car accident, but now, I hope he feels better knowing Theodore shared this intel. He couldโ€™ve kept it to himselfโ€”just like he couldโ€™ve hidden the fact he was born a Hunter. But he didnโ€™t.
