Chapter 0390
Athena
โThat sounds like pure fantasy to me.โ I shake my head, struggling to process Theodoreโs words.
โThere was a time none of us believed in Lycans either.โ He gestures toward the window where Lycans are training. Zachary ordered them to intensify their drillsโall to protect me. โWeโve learned a great deal since then.โ
โHeโs right,โ Alexander says. โRemember what happened when that first Lycan emerged from the forest, right over there? You hid. We tore it apart because we had no idea what it was.โ
'Heโs right,' Nyx murmurs.
'How would you know? You werenโt even here!'
'I have access to all your memories,' she huffs.
โSo youโre saying heโs a Witchโฆ but heโs not working with one?โ I ask. Madame Zora is the only Witch Iโve ever met, and sheโs gone now. Nothing like this.
Alexander nods. โWitches vary. They arenโt uniform like Lycans or Wolvesโor so Iโve heard. Different strengths. Different abilities. And theyโre damn near impossible to find. Some, like Madame Zora, work for Wolvesโfor a price. Others act like theyโre above everyone. No idea why, given how few remain.โ
โSeraphina said they donโt work with Lycans, but Evelyn is one.โ Iโm trying hard to connect the dots, but it feels like a giant piece is still missing. Something none of us can see.
โDid Luc piss off any Witches? Is that why Levi is doing this?โ I ask.
โI already asked,โ Alexander tells me. โHe said he doesnโt deal with Witches. They never interested himโฆ until now.โ
โBecause of Hannah?โ
He nods.
โHeโs with her at the hospital right now,โ Theodore adds. โSheโs slowly becoming more lucid. When sheโs ready, we might get more answers.โ
I nod, rocking gently. Evrin clings to me like he has all morning. Almost as if he senses somethingโs wrong. Alexander offers to take him, but Evrin just holds me tighter.
โSo heโs a Witch who faked being a Lycanโฆ and heโs strong enough to form a link with me?โ
โI know it sounds far-fetched,โ Theodore agrees. โBut it fits.โ
'No,' Nyx mutters. 'No, it fucking doesnโt.'
โWhatโs our next move?โ I ask, keeping myโand Nyxโsโthoughts private.
โWe need Evelyn to break,โ Alexander says, leaning over the cot to check on a sleeping Logan.
โShe didnโt even realize I could scent her,โ I reply. โShe kept going, spinning her story about what Levi did to her, even as her scent gave her away. I expected her to shift, but she just played the victimโlike we were wrong for tying her up.โ
โSeraphina will try to get information out of her,โ Alexander tells me.
'Why?' Nyx mutters in my head.
โWhy would she do that?โ I ask.
โI asked her. She feels just as betrayed learning the truth about Evelyn. I donโt think sheโs doing it to help usโmore to satisfy her own anger at being deceived. She knows she could die either way, and she still agreed.โ Alexanderโs crimson eyes linger on me.
โI thought you mightโve killed her.โ
โI considered it. But with everything happening, I figured we could use her. To do that, weโll need to feed her. Bring her out once a day so she can report whatever Evelyn is plotting.โ
โIf we bring her out, we have to bring Evelyn out too. Otherwise, sheโll suspect something,โ Theodore adds. โIt seems like Levi has some attachment to Evelyn, right?โ
โMaybe,โ I sigh. โOr it could be the other way around. Luc thinks thereโs a good chance Evelyn is running the show.โ
I notice how Alexander is looking at me. Heโs been wary of Theodore since the car accident, but now, I hope he feels better knowing Theodore shared this intel. He couldโve kept it to himselfโjust like he couldโve hidden the fact he was born a Hunter. But he didnโt.
