Chapter 0351

โ€œA Lycan might be aware of us now.โ€

โ€œAnd you didnโ€™t eliminate him?โ€ Her tone is sharp with disbelief.

โ€œHannah refused. She believes she can persuade him to stay silent.โ€

โ€œThen act first. I already know. Athena knows. Alexander likely knows tooโ€”Athena tells him everything, or he reads her mind, just like Sebastian reads mine. Neither has spoken up because theyโ€™re both mated to someone unexpected. And from what I understand about Hannah, she doesnโ€™t judge what you do. You did kill the man who marked her and held her captive.โ€

I nod, turning her words over in my mind.

โ€œDid you know back then?โ€ she asks. โ€œWhen I brought her to the house, did you know she was your mate?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œAnd you waited all this time?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œBecause sheโ€™s a Lycan?โ€

โ€œYes. And because it would mean replacing my deceased mate.โ€

โ€œSo you believe thatโ€™s it? That youโ€™re never allowed to be loved again?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s more complicated than that.โ€

โ€œIt really isnโ€™t,โ€ she mutters.

โ€œItโ€™s not simple.โ€

She laughs softly, then curls in as a wave of pain hits. โ€œI told you not to make me laugh!โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t trying to.โ€

โ€œYou think this is complicated?! This is the easiest problem you could have. At least she isnโ€™t human. Can you imagine explaining everything to a human?โ€

Maybe she was the right person to talk to. Athena would have left me with more questions than answers. Or I wouldโ€™ve gotten lost watching her soul.

โ€œThereโ€™s only so much I can say,โ€ Brianna smiles weakly. โ€œUltimately, you have to make the decision, not me. But if you canโ€™t handle it, let her go. It isnโ€™t fairโ€”not after everything sheโ€™s been through.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s part of the problem.โ€

She raises an eyebrow.

โ€œI canโ€™t let her go either.โ€

โ€œOr maybe you donโ€™t truly want to,โ€ she shrugs.

โ€œAnnoyingly, I think youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œI usually am.โ€ She gives me a knowing look.

I glance around. The hospital is eerily quiet. No one else is here. โ€œWhere is everyone?โ€

โ€œSebastian went with Theodore to get supplies.โ€

โ€œHe left you alone.โ€

She nods, her smile fading. โ€œI told him to. Every time I look at him, I want to cry.โ€

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t blameโ€”โ€

โ€œI know he doesnโ€™t. Itโ€™s like your situationโ€”itโ€™s complicated. I know he feels what Iโ€™m feeling, and somehow that makes it worse, when it should help. Does that make sense?โ€

โ€œIf I couldnโ€™t see your soul, Iโ€™d say no. But thereโ€™s a hole in you where something was once whole. A hole Sebastian doesnโ€™t have. He feels the loss too, just differently. Donโ€™t shut him out. He lost it too.โ€

โ€œAt least you didnโ€™t tell me Iโ€™d get over it.โ€

I frown. โ€œWho would say something like that?โ€

โ€œWhen I was human, my father said it to my mother right after he beat her brutally. She lost a baby because of what he did.โ€

โ€œThen itโ€™s a good thing you killed him.โ€

She nods, her gaze drifting past me. I catch Sebastianโ€™s scent approaching and prepare to leave.

โ€œThanks for coming,โ€ she says softly.

โ€œIโ€™ll see you later. I need to find my mate.โ€

I head back into the forest where I left Hannah. Her jasmine scent still lingers in the air. I follow it to the ruins of Briannaโ€™s burned house.

But strangely, her scent shifts direction, heading south deeper into the woods. Another scent accompanies hersโ€”a Lycanโ€™s. The same arrogant one who was questioning her.

I track the scents and footprints deeper and deeper until they abruptly stop. Her scent vanishes completely.

โ€œHANNAH!โ€

No answer. One of Alexanderโ€™s wolves appears. โ€œIs there a problem?โ€

โ€œHow far south am I?โ€

โ€œAlmost at the border.โ€

โ€œHas anyone passed through here?โ€

โ€œI wouldโ€™ve seen them. Is someone missing?โ€

โ€œStill determining.โ€

I crouch, tracing the last set of tracks. My eyes scan the trees above. Nothing. Wolves canโ€™t scent Lycans in Lycan form, but I can. Someone shifted here.

That bastard took Hannah!
