Chapter 0351
โA Lycan might be aware of us now.โ
โAnd you didnโt eliminate him?โ Her tone is sharp with disbelief.
โHannah refused. She believes she can persuade him to stay silent.โ
โThen act first. I already know. Athena knows. Alexander likely knows tooโAthena tells him everything, or he reads her mind, just like Sebastian reads mine. Neither has spoken up because theyโre both mated to someone unexpected. And from what I understand about Hannah, she doesnโt judge what you do. You did kill the man who marked her and held her captive.โ
I nod, turning her words over in my mind.
โDid you know back then?โ she asks. โWhen I brought her to the house, did you know she was your mate?โ
โYes.โ
โAnd you waited all this time?โ
โYes.โ
โBecause sheโs a Lycan?โ
โYes. And because it would mean replacing my deceased mate.โ
โSo you believe thatโs it? That youโre never allowed to be loved again?โ
โItโs more complicated than that.โ
โIt really isnโt,โ she mutters.
โItโs not simple.โ
She laughs softly, then curls in as a wave of pain hits. โI told you not to make me laugh!โ
โI wasnโt trying to.โ
โYou think this is complicated?! This is the easiest problem you could have. At least she isnโt human. Can you imagine explaining everything to a human?โ
Maybe she was the right person to talk to. Athena would have left me with more questions than answers. Or I wouldโve gotten lost watching her soul.
โThereโs only so much I can say,โ Brianna smiles weakly. โUltimately, you have to make the decision, not me. But if you canโt handle it, let her go. It isnโt fairโnot after everything sheโs been through.โ
โThatโs part of the problem.โ
She raises an eyebrow.
โI canโt let her go either.โ
โOr maybe you donโt truly want to,โ she shrugs.
โAnnoyingly, I think youโre right.โ
โI usually am.โ She gives me a knowing look.
I glance around. The hospital is eerily quiet. No one else is here. โWhere is everyone?โ
โSebastian went with Theodore to get supplies.โ
โHe left you alone.โ
She nods, her smile fading. โI told him to. Every time I look at him, I want to cry.โ
โHe doesnโt blameโโ
โI know he doesnโt. Itโs like your situationโitโs complicated. I know he feels what Iโm feeling, and somehow that makes it worse, when it should help. Does that make sense?โ
โIf I couldnโt see your soul, Iโd say no. But thereโs a hole in you where something was once whole. A hole Sebastian doesnโt have. He feels the loss too, just differently. Donโt shut him out. He lost it too.โ
โAt least you didnโt tell me Iโd get over it.โ
I frown. โWho would say something like that?โ
โWhen I was human, my father said it to my mother right after he beat her brutally. She lost a baby because of what he did.โ
โThen itโs a good thing you killed him.โ
She nods, her gaze drifting past me. I catch Sebastianโs scent approaching and prepare to leave.
โThanks for coming,โ she says softly.
โIโll see you later. I need to find my mate.โ
I head back into the forest where I left Hannah. Her jasmine scent still lingers in the air. I follow it to the ruins of Briannaโs burned house.
But strangely, her scent shifts direction, heading south deeper into the woods. Another scent accompanies hersโa Lycanโs. The same arrogant one who was questioning her.
I track the scents and footprints deeper and deeper until they abruptly stop. Her scent vanishes completely.
โHANNAH!โ
No answer. One of Alexanderโs wolves appears. โIs there a problem?โ
โHow far south am I?โ
โAlmost at the border.โ
โHas anyone passed through here?โ
โI wouldโve seen them. Is someone missing?โ
โStill determining.โ
I crouch, tracing the last set of tracks. My eyes scan the trees above. Nothing. Wolves canโt scent Lycans in Lycan form, but I can. Someone shifted here.
That bastard took Hannah!
