Isabella

“Maybe I can get through to him.” I whisper to Midnight.

‘It won’t work. Julian is completely shutting me out.’

“You can link him?” I ask, surprised. She hadn’t mentioned anything.

‘Only since he arrived at the pack. It temporarily unlocked our connection. But he’s giving me nothing.’ She lets out a frustrated sigh. ‘Though facing him directly might force a response.’

Two days had passed since they brought him here. Alexander and Zachary took turns interrogating him, but neither got any answers. Alexander said it was like trying to squeeze water from a stone. The only reason they hadn’t resorted to torture was because I begged them not to.

A part of me still believed the kind brother I loved was trapped inside, buried under his grief for Sophia. I wondered if he had ever truly moved on.

I had been pleading to speak with him, just for a few minutes. But both my brother and my mate refused.

“They won’t allow it.” I tell Midnight. “There’s no way Alexander or Zachary will let me go down there.”

‘They aren’t the only ones in charge.’

“Midnight?!” Her response shocks me. She usually insists on following rules and obeying our Alpha. But her desperation to see her twin was consuming her.

“Talking to your Wolf again?” Zachary’s voice makes me jump as he enters our bedroom.

I need to be more careful when communicating with Midnight.

“Yes. She’s my Wolf.”

He moves behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pressing his face against my neck. His warm breath fans over my skin, igniting a fire within me. “You do realize I know you’re trying to find a way to see Julian.”

My cheeks flush with heat.

“We’re already avoiding torture because you asked. I know you think your brother is still in there, but…”

“But what?”

“He made his choice, Isabella. He chose to pair with someone instead of dealing with his grief.”

“You think he made a mistake? Claiming Seraphina.”

“I think he was in over his head. Seraphina offered him something he couldn’t refuse. And I know you think that too.”

“Maybe I can uncover the truth. Maybe seeing me will help. We’re twins, we have twin Wolves. He can’t ignore me.”

“I’ll speak with Alexander.”

“Thank you, that’s all I’m asking.”

“If he approves, you don’t go alone. I mean it Isabella.”

“I won’t be alone. I have Midnight.”

“What is it with you two?”

I raise an eyebrow, confused.

“Athena used the same phrase. But mentioned her Lycan.”

“Because it’s true.” I step out of his embrace and turn to face him. “Have you spoken to Brianna?”

Anger immediately flashes across his face.

“I know you’re angry, Zachary. But she followed Athena’s orders. You can’t stay mad at her for that.”

“She could have been killed.”

They hadn’t spoken since their argument. But he wasn’t truly angry about her following orders. It was the mate secret. He wanted to verify the details. Though it didn’t matter anymore – from what I heard, the guy had already claimed her. And since he was from our pack, it couldn’t be that bad.

“Should I be jealous that you’re so upset about her having a mate?” I wasn’t jealous. I knew he was just worried about his best friend.
