Chapter 0142

Shit, shit, shit, shit.

My feet pace relentlessly along the sterile hospital corridor. The usual silence amplifies my frantic thoughts.

โ€˜Would you just calm down?โ€™ My Wolf, Midnight, rolls her eyes internally.

Iโ€™m mated to a Lycan! How am I supposed to stay calm about that?โ€™

Athena is a Lycan.โ€™

Sheโ€™s different. I actually like her. This guyโ€ฆ heโ€™s friends with Brianna. Thatโ€™s a major red flag. And look at the others in his groupโ€”theyโ€™re all complete jerks! Weโ€™re stuck right in the middle of some twisted Moon Goddess scheme!โ€

Midnight laughs at my panic. I rarely let my inner turmoil show. Thankfully, Midnightโ€™s composure always masks my anxiety.

โ€˜We could talk to her?โ€™ Midnight suggests.

Brianna? We canโ€™t do that. It would seem like weโ€™re betraying Athena. I made it very clear to Brianna that she isnโ€™t welcome here.โ€™

It might be the only way to meet our second chance mate.โ€™

What if heโ€™s nothing like Gabriel? What if heโ€™s horrible? What if he despises us?โ€

Weโ€™ll face that when it happens. The hospital is quiet as always. Go find her!โ€™

Stepping outside, I spot Athena and my brother engaged in a heated argument. Alexander should know better. Athena is supposed to be resting.

Sheโ€™s definitely grown more confident since the pregnancy.โ€™ Midnight observes.

Hormones and past trauma.โ€™ I mutter in response. โ€˜I just hope Alexander is ready for it to get worse.โ€

Hey?โ€

Sebastian startles me. I really need to stop zoning out during internal conversations with Midnight.

โ€œHey Sebastian, whatโ€™s up?โ€

โ€œHave you seen Theodore?โ€

โ€œNo. He was tutoring Athena, soโ€ฆโ€ I gesture toward the arguing couple, โ€œI assume he went home.โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

โ€œHave you seen Brianna?โ€

He raises an eyebrow. โ€œShe was near her house earlier.โ€

โ€œHer house?โ€

He nods. โ€œAlexander arranged it for her.โ€

That surprises me. Bringing her here after what she did to Athena was unlike him.

Sebastian walks with me to show me the house. He leaves me standing a few meters away as he goes to find Theodore.

Three times I approach the door to knock.

Three times I turn around and nearly walk away.

Just as I prepare for a fourth attempt, she yanks the door open forcefully and glares at me.

โ€œWhat?โ€ She scowls. โ€œIโ€™ve been watching you through the window since you arrived. You made it perfectly clear you donโ€™t want me here. So what do you want? Did you come to insult me? Call me every name imaginable?โ€

I could no longer smell his scent on her. She had clearly showered, washing his scent away.

โ€œThe guy. The scent that was on you. Have you heard from him?โ€

โ€œNow it makes sense.โ€ She smirks. โ€œThe questions about him. Youโ€™re mated to him. You smelled him on me, and thatโ€™s why youโ€™re here.โ€

โ€œApparently!โ€ I huff.

โ€œLast I heard, yes. Heโ€™s still alive.โ€

โ€œHe was killing the Lycans?โ€

Brianna nods. โ€œThe Rogues. Do you want to come in? Iโ€™m cooking and donโ€™t want it to burn.โ€

My dark eyes scan the area for observers. I didnโ€™t want Athena to think Iโ€™m betraying her. I just needed information about my mate.

โ€œSure.โ€

I follow her inside, and she gestures toward the small kitchen table.

โ€œZachary is my best friend.โ€ Brianna tells me. โ€œWe found each other a few months after he was turned. By then, Iโ€™d been a Lycan for almost a year. A very lonely year.โ€

โ€œHe was bitten too?โ€

โ€œBy the same bitch that bit me!โ€ Brianna pours me a coffee and slides it across the table.
