Chapter 0179
Isabella
Zachary paces my room, his movements tight with tension. He checked every window twice before drawing the curtains. At least there were no more bloody handprints tonight.
He looks exhausted. Midnight whispers.
A lot is happening. I murmur back.
Asking if heโs okay would be pointless. Itโs written all over him. Iโve never been good at comfort. I tried with Athena when she first arrived, and ended up mentioning Alexanderโs past brides. That was supposed to be a warning, but it came out all wrong.
Julian once told me Iโm too honest for my own good. That it would cause trouble someday.
Youโve always been a terrible liar. Midnight snorts. Itโs the only thing she ever agreed with him about.
Zachary checks the hallway again. He even inspects the bathroom, though the window is too small for anyone to squeeze through. He acts like Gabriel might leap out and attack us any second. I half expected him to look under the bed.
Heโs just trying to regain some control.
โIf heโs in human form, weโd catch his scent. If heโs Lycan, youโd definitely smell him.โ I remind him.
โYouโre right.โ He stops in front of me and leans down to kiss me.
When he pulls back, he rests his forehead against mine.
โYou think itโs too late, donโt you?โ Iโve been desperate to ask. I kept the thought buried so he wouldnโt pick it up.
โNo.โ His voice is heavy. He doesnโt sound convinced.
โDonโt lie. I see it in your eyes. You warned Alexander, but you believe itโs too late.โ
โThereโs no way to know for sure. None of us are exactly alike. You and Julian are twins. Your wolves are twins. But youโre nothing like each other. We donโt know if we can bring her back once she crosses over. If she doesnโt want toโฆโ He shakes his head, trailing off.
โI know Athena is your friend, Isabella. But thereโs only so much we can do. Only so much anyone can do.โ
He sits beside me on the bed.
โYouโll still try?โ I ask.
โI wonโt stop trying.โ
โWhat about the pups?โ
He avoids my eyes.
โWill they survive?โ I press. Maybe if Athena knows what could happen, it might stop her from changing.
Zacharyโs jaw tightens.
โTell me. I can handle it.โ
โThere was a female in our Rogue group. She was pregnant when she turned full Lycan.โ
โThe pup died during birth?โ
โShe ate it.โ His eyes flick to my shocked expression. โItโs not black and white, Isabella. Everything is food to them. Unlessโฆโ
I cut in, putting it together. โUnless the pup is born in Lycan form. Hers was human. So she ate her own child.โ
He nods. โI warned you, Isabella. We are dark. Everything about being Rogue is food and games. Nothing else matters. The world could be ending, but if you have food, you donโt care.โ
โIt took me a long time to understand why we become obsessed with food. The simple answer is the same reason you eat so much after shifting. It makes you ravenous. But for a Rogue, the hunger never goes away. Ever.โ
โYou have to tell her.โ I whisper. โThose pups mean everything to her. To this pack. To Alexander. To me. And to you, too. Maybe it will stop her from killing anyone else. Maybe it will prevent the change.โ I hear the pleading in my own voice. Iโm terrified of losing her. And in that moment, I understand thereโs more to what Zachary is saying.
