Chapter 0061
A dark thought flickered in her mind. It was a hidden part of her, buried deep beneath the persona she'd built over the years. Most would find it disturbing. I found it electrifying. It called to me. I needed to draw it out.
A sharp knock interrupted us. Isabellaโs familiar scent drifted through the door. The conversation halted. From Athenaโs thoughts, I sensed her relief.
โEnter,โ I called.
My sister stepped inside. Her eyes darted between Athena and me, assessing. โCan I take Athena shopping?โ
โShopping?โ
โA few of us are heading into the city. I thought she might like to come. Unless Iโm interrupting something important again?โ
โThatโs her decision.โ I watched my mate, listening to her silent worries.
She shook her head. โIโm notโฆ Iโm not ready.โ Her gaze shifted to me. โIt might not be safe.โ
โNothing will happen,โ Isabella insisted. โThe city is neutral territory. Fighting is forbidden there. Iโll be with her. Weโll keep her safe.โ
โWho is โweโ?โ I asked.
โMe, Theodoreโฆโ She listed a few others.
โTheodore is going?โ Shopping was hardly his style.
โHe wants more books. You know how he is. Wonโt have them delivered in case the pages get bent.โ She rolled her eyes. โI figured youโd want a chaperone.โ
โSo you recruited him?โ
โExactly.โ
I turned back to Athena. โSheโs right. The city is safe. I trust Theodore.โ
โWhat about Dominic?โ she whispered.
โI doubt heโd go there.โ I locked eyes with Isabella. โIf thereโs any troubleโโ
โWeโll get her out immediately.โ
I moved closer to Athena, turning her to face me. โIsabella has gone to the city weekly since childhood. She knows it better than anyone. If you donโt want to go, thatโs fine too.โ
โYou donโtโฆ you donโt want me to go.โ She kept her eyes down. โI can feel it.โ
โIโd prefer you where I can reach you instantly. But hiding wonโt help you conquer your fears. I trust my sister. I trust Theodore. They wonโt let anything happen to you. Anyone who tries would be incredibly stupid.โ
โEvery Wolf knows who my brother is,โ Isabella added. โGabriel made sure of that.โ
She claimed she didnโt blame me for Gabrielโs rejection. But her words sometimes suggested otherwise. I ignored the comment, focusing on my mate. โItโs your choice, Athena.โ
โWhat if Iโฆโ
โWeโll have to trust that you wonโt.โ
I felt Isabellaโs stare burning into me. I still hadnโt told her about Athena being Lycan.
โWait, what?โ Isabellaโs eyes shot to Athena when I finally revealed it. โYouโre telling me she looks like that thing you killed?โ
โYes.โ
โSo sheโs not a Wolf?โ She glared, demanding answers.
โTechnically, from what I understand, they are part Wolf.โ
โTechnically?โ she sputtered.
โYes.โ
โThis is going great,โ Titan groaned.
โOkay, so the guy in the dungeon, claiming to be her brother. Heโs one too?โ Isabella asked.
โYes.โ
โAnd youโre letting him live?โ
โFor now. Are you questioning my decision?โ My tone was a clear warning.
She turned to Athena, her expression softening. She likely realized her words applied to my mate too. โAre you okay?โ
Athena shook her head.
โThen you definitely need to come. Escape this madness for a few hours. Clear your head. Spend a fortune on my brotherโs credit.โ
Athenaโs blue eyes found mine.
โYour choice,โ I repeated.
Reluctantly, she agreed. She spent the next hour seeking reassurance.
She asked me one last time before getting in the car.
โJust try to enjoy yourself,โ I told her.
Isabella pulled her into the vehicle. โIโll watch her. If itโs too much, weโll return immediately.โ
โYou donโt usually like the clingy ones,โ Sebastian remarked as the car drove away.
โThis is different.โ
โBecause sheโs your mate? Because you marked her?โ He raised a brow.
โSheโs clingy out of fear, not possession. She needs time.โ
โHow did Isabella take the news?โ
โShe focused more on me sparing Caleb. It took her a moment to realize wanting him dead would make her a hypocrite regarding Athena.โ
โIsabella doesnโt usually make friends easily. She must like Athena. Especially to invite her shopping. Sheโs never done that with anyone else.โ
I nodded. My sister preferred the hospital to social events.
โI need you to do something for me,โ I said as the car disappeared.
โYou want me to watch her?โ
โJust as a precaution.โ
