Chapter 0284
โAre you going to explain what just happened?โ Isabellaโs voice is low as I shut the door hard. She doesnโt turn toward me. Her focus remains entirely on her brother.
โThat jerk says heโs a Hunter.โ
โI thought he was a Wolf.โ
โA Hunter who targets Rogues and Lycans.โ
She blows out a breath and finally tears her dark gaze from Julian to look at me. โWhy would my brother bring someone like that here? With you and Athena hereโฆ Brianna and the boysโฆโ
โHe also has history with Seraphina.โ I let out a frustrated sound. โAnd Brianna convinced him to help Athena.โ
โHeโs Charlotteโs father?โ Her eyes lock on mine as I deliver the news. Itโs the most attention sheโs given me since Julian was brought in. A small victory, distracting her exhausted mind even for a moment.
โSo it seems.โ
โYouโre certain?โ
โI saw his expression when he looked at her. It mirrored the way Alexander and Athena look at their sons.โ
โHow is Charlotte handling it?โ
โBetter than expected. She almost seemed to recognize him.โ I frown, remembering how she hugged me. I mistook her fear for overwhelm. โShe ran straight into his arms.โ
โShe wonโt stop loving you.โ Isabella offers a faint, tired smile.
โBut Iโm not her actual father, am I?โ The thought felt like a physical tear in my chest.
โDonโt assume the worst yet. Charlotte adores you. Youโre the only one she lets call her Lottie. She wonโt just disappear from your life.โ
โShe will if he takes her. This is her home, Isabella. She loves her pack. Sheโs a pack Wolf.โ
โIf heโs helping Athena, heโll be staying awhile. Seraphina hasnโt been seen since your last encounter. Charlotte isnโt leaving you that easily.โ She glares at me. โAnd you canโt kill him. That would destroy her.โ
Her gaze drops back to her brother. Iโd lost her attention again. In the silence, I replayed the Hunterโs words. โTwins in essence and spirit.โ He claimed the machines werenโt sustaining Julian.
Isabella had said their Wolves were twins too. Could he possibly mean Midnight was keeping Julian alive?
I hated the bastard, but I needed answers.
Alexander and the Hunter were still outside the hospital.
โWhat did you mean about the machines not keeping him alive?โ I demanded.
He smirked. My fingers itched to wrap around his throat.
โHe was suggesting itโs Isabella,โ Alexander stated calmly.
โAlright, enlighten me with your brilliant theory.โ
โDo you genuinely want to know, or are you just being difficult?โ
Alexanderโs crimson eyes held mine. A silent warning to tread carefully.
โI want to hear it,โ I gritted out.
โHe lives because of her. Twin Wolves shared by twins are as rare as Athena. You know that, right?โ
โIโm aware.โ
โTheir souls are linked.โ He laced his fingers together. โIntertwined.โ
โHow does that work? He left the pack.โ
โThey leave a piece of themselves behind. When I say sheโs keeping him alive, itโs becauseโฆโ
โPart of her soul resides in him,โ Alexander finished. โShe isnโt dead, so he canโt move on.โ
โExactly!โ The Hunter clapped his hands together, winking at Alexander. โAnd thatโs why you, Alexander, felt his death and continued. She canโt. Sheโs trapped.โ
โDoes he still possess a soul?โ Alexander asked, his brow furrowed.
โI believe you already know the answer to that.โ
โOkay, oh wise one,โ I muttered, sarcasm dripping from my tone. โWhat do we do if my mate is the one sustaining him?โ
โThereโs nothing you can do. Itโs in the hands of a higher power. The machines aid his healing. But no one survives long without a soul. Perhaps if itโs deemed he deserves it, heโll be granted a new one. You should pray for that outcome.โ
โTotal lunatic,โ I muttered, turning away. Iโd never heard such nonsense.
โYou love my little girl,โ he shouted after me. โSheโll grow up to be just like me. If I somehow decide to let you live, will you make her think sheโs losing her mind?โ
โYou canโt guarantee sheโll be like you.โ
โItโs in her genetics. Iโve already seen the signs.โ
I was ready to retort when Athenaโs voice echoed in my mind. โThis is your Alpha. Your presence is required in Obsidian Howl.โ
I looked up, confused. I was already in Obsidian Howl. I turned to ask Alexander what was happening just as Brianna sprinted toward us, a huge grin on her face.
โShe did it! She linked everyone.โ
