Chapter 0158

Athena

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ I demand, glaring at the Rogue chained to the dungeon wall.

It responds with a low, guttural growl. Iโ€™ve been asking the same question for days. It still refuses to speak.

This is a terrible idea. We should have waited for Alexander. Nyx whispers nervously. She hates me being down here alone. Especially while pregnant.

Theyโ€™re locked up. They canโ€™t hurt us. I reply silently. Both Ethan and the Rogue are securely restrained. Thereโ€™s nothing they can do.

โ€œHe wonโ€™t answer you.โ€ Ethan calls out from his cell. โ€œShouldnโ€™t you be protecting those precious twins instead of bothering us?โ€

The Rogueโ€™s eyes drop to my stomach at the word โ€˜twinsโ€™. Its snout wrinkles tightly, baring its teeth. Every time Ethan says it, the creature focuses intensely on my belly. Heโ€™s clearly trying to provoke it.

โ€œGrowl all you want.โ€ I snap at the Rogue. โ€œYouโ€™re chained. Youโ€™ve only got one and a half legs. Iโ€™ll kill you before you even touch me.โ€

It tugs violently against its restraints.

I made sure the Rogue paid for what it did to Isabella. Nyx made certain of that.

Ethan chuckles behind me. I ignore him for now. Heโ€™ll be dead tomorrow. Finally.

The Rogueโ€™s growling deepens. Ethan laughs louder.

I spin around to face the bastard in the cell. He always interferes. Always says things he shouldnโ€™t. โ€œShut up.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t you worried about being down here alone?โ€ Ethan asks.

โ€œYour trial is tomorrow.โ€ I spit back.

โ€œOh, sweet Athena.โ€ His dark grey eyes lock onto mine.

โ€œDonโ€™t call me that.โ€ I snap, cutting him off. โ€œYou donโ€™t get to speak to me like that. Not after what you did to Sophia. Not after what you planned to do to my unborn pups.โ€

He grins, revealing missing teeth. โ€œYou think these chains can hold me?โ€ He pulls against them, moving closer to the bars. โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m the only one who wants those pups?โ€

The Rogue begins chuckling too. My confidence falters. Iโ€™m missing something. Theyโ€™re both chained. Thereโ€™s no way out.

My hands instinctively move to my small bump.

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ I growl again, directing the question at both of them.

Alexander shouldnโ€™t have put them so close together. They can talk. They can plan. They can plot. Two different enemies working together.

The Rogueโ€™s beady eyes leave my stomach and meet mine. Another deep growl rumbles in its throat. For a moment, I donโ€™t feel safe.

I know it canโ€™t go anywhere. I know they canโ€™t break free. But the unease doesnโ€™t fade. It feels like Iโ€™m back in front of Victoriaโ€™s fist. Unable to understand whatโ€™s wrong. Unable to defend myself when it comes.

Shaking my head, I turn and leave the dungeon.

I press my back against the dungeon door and look up. The midday sun warms my skin.

It only lasts two seconds before I feel his crimson eyes on me.

โ€œAgain?โ€ He mutters. โ€œI told you not to go down there. Especially alone. Youโ€™re supposed to be resting. Especially while Isabella canโ€™t check on you.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t alone.โ€ I protest, ignoring his comment about resting.

โ€œNyx doesnโ€™t count. If something happens to you, it happens to her too.โ€

He holds out his hand and pulls me against his chest. His arms lock tightly around me. He whispers in my ear. โ€œI donโ€™t like you going down there.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œReally? Because I see that frown. I feel your frustration. What did Ethan say this time?โ€
