Chapter 0322
Athenaโs fingers tighten around mine. Her eyes are wide, almost startled. โI can handle this, canโt I?โ
So far, the number of Lycans arriving had been manageable. Some came alone. Others in small clusters. Except for Silverwood, but even their group wasnโt large.
โAbsolutely. You were born for this, Alpha Athena.โ
She offers a faint smile before descending toward the gathered Lycans. She delivers the same speech she gave the others. Well-practiced. Effective. Itโs what she needs right now.
Zachary watches the crowd carefully as he approaches me. โI thought Isabella might have come down with you. I hoped sheโd want to see how Athena is managing everything.โ
โHave you two talked?โ
โOf course we have. Sheโs my mate.โ
โYou know thatโs not what I meant. Have you discussed what sheโs feeling?โ
โSheโs completely closed off.โ
โI walked in on her arguing with Athena.โ His eyes widen at my words. โAthena told her sheโs rewriting what really happened with Julian. Isabella didnโt take it well.โ
โWhere is she now?โ He frowns.
โShe stormed off. Zachary, I know she lost her brother. But Alexander did too. Sheโs so fixated on how Seraphina betrayed him that sheโs forgotten Julian sought her out. Does she not remember he went to Seraphina willingly? Or is she still in denial? She shouldnโt be, right?โ
โIโll talk to her.โ
โDo you think she started the fire?โ
โNo. She knows the pack would turn on her if she did.โ He sighs. โWhat did Athena say about my mate?โ
โShe thinks Isabella is heading down a path where no one can help her.โ
I flinch as Lucas fires his gun.
Itโs a sound I doubt Iโll ever get used to.
But it silences the arguing Lycans instantly.
They all stare at the woman bleeding out on the ground.
One by one, they drop to their knees in submission.
All except two.
Theyโre dead before they even realize theyโve been caught.
Iโve been surrounded by death for years.
Iโve killed. Iโve watched others kill.
But when Lucas does it, itโs effortless. Like choosing a drink from the fridge.
It means nothing to him.
Caleb and a few other long-term Lycans move through the crowd.
They collect the bodies.
Theyโll take them to the far edge of the territory and burn them.
Just like all the others.
Itโs an exhausting process.
My idea, originally.
But I hadnโt expected so many Lycans to lose their lives.
Whatโs strange is that no other bitten Lycans have shown up.
Every single one here, except me and Zachary, is a pureblood.
โDoesnโt this seem weird to you?โ
โUsually I follow your train of thought, but youโll have to give me more than that.โ Zachary smirks.
โWe havenโt seen any bitten Lycans. None like us. Not even among the dead.โ
โAthena didnโt issue an order. It was just a request. Theyโre probably staying away because they fear being killed for not being purebloods. If theyโre even still alive. We donโt know if heโs taken any out.โ He nods toward Lucas. โHe doesnโt mention them. Iโm sure if Athena makes it an order, theyโll come. Why? Feeling left out?โ He muses.
โNo. Just curious, I guess.โ I sigh inwardly. Something always feels off. โWhere are we going to house all of them? Weโre out of cabins. What about the pack run tonight?โ
โItโs handled.โ
The gun fires again.
A sharp, burning pain tears through my stomach.
I see horror flash across Zacharyโs face.
Sebastian rushes toward me.
The sky spins above until Iโm staring straight up.
The men hover over me.
Sebastian presses his hands hard against my stomach.
Panic is written all over his face.
I hear Athena ordering the Lycans to drop flat.
What about Lucas?
Heโs the one who shot me.
