Chapter 0282
โThere he goes with that soul nonsense again.โ Titan grumbles. โI still donโt get how anyone can actually see a soul.โ
โAre you telling me her soul is corrupted?โ I question Lucas Adler.
I didnโt know what to make of his claim.
Once, I wouldnโt have believed someone could survive four bondings either.
Iโve seen too much these past few years to dismiss anything outright.
โNot corrupted. Cracked.โ
โCracked?โ Titan and I say at the same time.
โEvery soul begins as a tiny sphere of light. It expands as the person grows, slowly forming their shape. Some souls stop growing when the person becomes trapped in a cycle. Others, those who endure trauma, develop fractures. When these cracks connect, the soul shatters. And so does the person.โ
โHow severe are hers?โ
โShe should have broken apart already.โ
โIs that how the darkness entered?โ
โNo.โ
โHow can you be certain?โ
โIt was always there. Waiting.โ He lets out a low chuckle. โYou know, Iโve never actually spoken to Lycans or Rogues before. Only hunted them. Listened to them beg. I must admit, Athena is nothing like I expected.โ
โIf her soul is fractured, whatโs holding her together?โ
โStill working that out. Got another beer?โ
โWeโre limited.โ
โBecause of the blondeโs problems. Understood.โ He smirks, one eyebrow raised. โYou donโt believe me, do you Alexander?โ
He stands and tosses the empty bottle into the trash. โBut you believe in Witch magic, donโt you?โ
โAssuming youโre being truthfulโฆ You said her darkness was waiting. Youโre talking about her Lycan, arenโt you?โ
โExactly. But youโve suspected that for a while.โ He sits back down across from me. โAthena has astonishing control over her Lycan. I watched her force the darkness back. Something Iโve never witnessed.โ
โNever?โ
โNot once.โ
His fascination with her was obvious.
I couldnโt tell if it was good or bad.
Given his hatred for Lycans and Rogues, it likely wasnโt positive.
I needed to ensure he stayed on her side.
โHow do I help her control her Lycan if Nyx is the problem?โ
โWho knows.โ He shrugs. โHer cracks indicate she shouldnโt be alive. Sheโs constantly battling her Lycan. Survived four bondings.โ He keeps muttering to himself. Listing facts I already knew.
He looks directly at me. โMaybe binding her is what saved her.โ
โYouโre insane if you think Iโd bind her.โ How dare he suggest that.
โYouโre not hearing me, Alexander. You asked whatโs holding her together.โ He drums his fingers on the table, thinking. โHumans are full of cracks. Tiny ones that weave through their souls. Rarely connecting.โ
He grabs Charlotteโs coloring book from the table and flips to a blank page. Quickly sketching a human form.
โHumans crack under pressure, stress, financial worry. But their cracks become part of them. They learn. Like applying a bandage. Some end up in psych wards when their fractures collapse.โ
โAthena isnโt human.โ
โIโm aware. But she nearly was. Her body learned to defend itself. To survive. A cracked soul isnโt something we heal from, Alexander. Yet sheโs managed to stop the cracks from spreading.โ
His lips curl into a smile. โFascinating.โ
โFascinating?โ
โJust when I thought I knew everything about Rogues and Lycans, something new appears.โ His hazel eyes gleam with delight, giving him a sinister look. One I disliked intensely.
โYou wonโt touch her.โ I warn.
โI wonโt touch her. Canโt promise the same for the other two.โ He winks. I assume he means Zachary and Brianna, not the twins. But I have no intention of letting him harm any of them.
