Chapter 0282

โ€˜There he goes with that soul nonsense again.โ€™ Titan grumbles. โ€˜I still donโ€™t get how anyone can actually see a soul.โ€™

โ€œAre you telling me her soul is corrupted?โ€ I question Lucas Adler.

I didnโ€™t know what to make of his claim.

Once, I wouldnโ€™t have believed someone could survive four bondings either.

Iโ€™ve seen too much these past few years to dismiss anything outright.

โ€œNot corrupted. Cracked.โ€

โ€œCracked?โ€ Titan and I say at the same time.

โ€œEvery soul begins as a tiny sphere of light. It expands as the person grows, slowly forming their shape. Some souls stop growing when the person becomes trapped in a cycle. Others, those who endure trauma, develop fractures. When these cracks connect, the soul shatters. And so does the person.โ€

โ€œHow severe are hers?โ€

โ€œShe should have broken apart already.โ€

โ€œIs that how the darkness entered?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œHow can you be certain?โ€

โ€œIt was always there. Waiting.โ€ He lets out a low chuckle. โ€œYou know, Iโ€™ve never actually spoken to Lycans or Rogues before. Only hunted them. Listened to them beg. I must admit, Athena is nothing like I expected.โ€

โ€œIf her soul is fractured, whatโ€™s holding her together?โ€

โ€œStill working that out. Got another beer?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re limited.โ€

โ€œBecause of the blondeโ€™s problems. Understood.โ€ He smirks, one eyebrow raised. โ€œYou donโ€™t believe me, do you Alexander?โ€

He stands and tosses the empty bottle into the trash. โ€œBut you believe in Witch magic, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œAssuming youโ€™re being truthfulโ€ฆ You said her darkness was waiting. Youโ€™re talking about her Lycan, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œExactly. But youโ€™ve suspected that for a while.โ€ He sits back down across from me. โ€œAthena has astonishing control over her Lycan. I watched her force the darkness back. Something Iโ€™ve never witnessed.โ€

โ€œNever?โ€

โ€œNot once.โ€

His fascination with her was obvious.

I couldnโ€™t tell if it was good or bad.

Given his hatred for Lycans and Rogues, it likely wasnโ€™t positive.

I needed to ensure he stayed on her side.

โ€œHow do I help her control her Lycan if Nyx is the problem?โ€

โ€œWho knows.โ€ He shrugs. โ€œHer cracks indicate she shouldnโ€™t be alive. Sheโ€™s constantly battling her Lycan. Survived four bondings.โ€ He keeps muttering to himself. Listing facts I already knew.

He looks directly at me. โ€œMaybe binding her is what saved her.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re insane if you think Iโ€™d bind her.โ€ How dare he suggest that.

โ€œYouโ€™re not hearing me, Alexander. You asked whatโ€™s holding her together.โ€ He drums his fingers on the table, thinking. โ€œHumans are full of cracks. Tiny ones that weave through their souls. Rarely connecting.โ€

He grabs Charlotteโ€™s coloring book from the table and flips to a blank page. Quickly sketching a human form.

โ€œHumans crack under pressure, stress, financial worry. But their cracks become part of them. They learn. Like applying a bandage. Some end up in psych wards when their fractures collapse.โ€

โ€œAthena isnโ€™t human.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m aware. But she nearly was. Her body learned to defend itself. To survive. A cracked soul isnโ€™t something we heal from, Alexander. Yet sheโ€™s managed to stop the cracks from spreading.โ€

His lips curl into a smile. โ€œFascinating.โ€

โ€œFascinating?โ€

โ€œJust when I thought I knew everything about Rogues and Lycans, something new appears.โ€ His hazel eyes gleam with delight, giving him a sinister look. One I disliked intensely.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t touch her.โ€ I warn.

โ€œI wonโ€™t touch her. Canโ€™t promise the same for the other two.โ€ He winks. I assume he means Zachary and Brianna, not the twins. But I have no intention of letting him harm any of them.
