Chapter 0166

Alexander

โ€œYou saidโ€”โ€

โ€œI know, Alexander. I know exactly what I said.โ€ Zacharyโ€™s voice cuts through the air, sharp and impatient. His face is a mask of tension, deep lines of frustration carved into his brow. โ€œHe never wanted to shift back. I didnโ€™t even think it was possible. Do you have any idea how difficult it was for me?โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ Isabella demands, her voice tight.

โ€œI told you it wasnโ€™t easy. The process took time. I would wake up in Lycan form in the middle of a cornfield, having shifted in my sleep. Itโ€™s not something you can just undo. Not when youโ€™ve started to see yourself as a monster.โ€

โ€œJust full of secrets, arenโ€™t you!โ€ Julian mutters, shoving Zachary aside.

He drops to his knees, gathering Sophiaโ€™s lifeless body into his arms. The devastation on his face is unmistakable. This is the deepest loss heโ€™s felt since our parents. Nothing else has ever cut this deep.

โ€˜We need to watch him closely.โ€™ Titanโ€™s voice rumbles in my mind.

โ€˜Agreed,โ€™ I reply silently.

โ€˜Maybe this is what he needs,โ€™ Titan adds.

โ€˜What are you talking about?โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s spent his whole life only caring about himself.โ€™

โ€˜Thatโ€™s harsh. How would you feel if Athenaโ€”โ€™ Shit. Athena.

I quickly mindlink several guards, ordering them to secure the perimeter of the house.

โ€œLetโ€™s assume heโ€™s escaped.โ€ Though walking out shouldnโ€™t have been possible. โ€œHow did he shift?โ€ I ask Zachary.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. He hasnโ€™t been human in over a year. And like I said, he never wanted to change back. Trust me, I tried to help him. Brianna did too. He never wanted it. The only explanation is that heโ€™s been shifting for a while now. He must have kept it hidden.โ€

โ€˜Alexander.โ€™ Theodoreโ€™s voice echoes in my head. โ€˜Heโ€™s gone.โ€™

โ€˜What?โ€™

โ€˜He isnโ€™t here. According to Ethan, he did shift back to human form.โ€™

โ€˜How the hell did he get out?โ€™ I snap.

The Rogue had been chained to a wall.

If he shifted, he could have slipped the chains. That much I understand.

But the cell was still locked.

The only way out was if someone physically let him out.

Not to mention, he wouldnโ€™t have been able to just walk away. I saw what Athena did to his leg.

If we believe Ethan, heโ€™s also claiming that Sophia was the one who helped Gabriel escape.

I glance at Julian, sitting silently on the floor. Heโ€™s gently stroking Sophiaโ€™s red hair.

Why would she help Gabriel? It makes no sense. She loved Athena. She stood against the woman who changed her, all to protect Athena.

โ€œIโ€™m right, arenโ€™t I?โ€ Zachary asks. โ€œI can see it on your face. And I know what I scent. I am right.โ€

โ€œIs he?โ€ Isabella presses. โ€œHas Gabriel escaped? Has he shifted? Is he out there, moving through the pack like he belongs here?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Zachary cuts me off. โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t be that stupid. Heโ€™ll hunker down somewhere. Somewhere he can hide in plain sight. Watching. Waiting. Heโ€™ll work carefully, spreading his scent throughout the entire pack.โ€

โ€œThis is your fault!โ€ Julian snarls from the floor. โ€œYou! He came here because of you. Youโ€™d better sleep with one eye open, Lycan.โ€

Zachary doesnโ€™t respond. Heโ€™s quiet, deep in thought, completely unbothered by my brotherโ€™s threat.

โ€˜Youโ€™re hiding something.โ€™ Isabellaโ€™s voice whispers through our mindlink.

I look over at her. Her arms are crossed tightly over her chest as she stares at me. โ€˜I know you, Alexander. Thereโ€™s something youโ€™re not saying.โ€™

โ€˜According to Ethan, Sophia let him out.โ€™

โ€œWHAT?!โ€ she shouts aloud, forgetting to keep the conversation private.

Everyone turns to look at her. She quickly drops her gaze.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ Zachary asks, stepping closer to my sister.

โ€œSorry,โ€ Isabella mumbles.

โ€œLook, I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s true. All we have is Ethanโ€™s word, and heโ€™s not exactly known for his honesty.โ€

โ€œHe saw him shift?โ€ Zachary frowns.

โ€œAnd he saw who let him out. Which Iโ€™m taking with a grain of salt!โ€

โ€œLet me guess. She did.โ€ He points at Sophia. โ€œI canโ€™t scent anyone else on her.โ€
