Chapter 0166
Alexander
โYou saidโโ
โI know, Alexander. I know exactly what I said.โ Zacharyโs voice cuts through the air, sharp and impatient. His face is a mask of tension, deep lines of frustration carved into his brow. โHe never wanted to shift back. I didnโt even think it was possible. Do you have any idea how difficult it was for me?โ
โWhat are you talking about?โ Isabella demands, her voice tight.
โI told you it wasnโt easy. The process took time. I would wake up in Lycan form in the middle of a cornfield, having shifted in my sleep. Itโs not something you can just undo. Not when youโve started to see yourself as a monster.โ
โJust full of secrets, arenโt you!โ Julian mutters, shoving Zachary aside.
He drops to his knees, gathering Sophiaโs lifeless body into his arms. The devastation on his face is unmistakable. This is the deepest loss heโs felt since our parents. Nothing else has ever cut this deep.
โWe need to watch him closely.โ Titanโs voice rumbles in my mind.
โAgreed,โ I reply silently.
โMaybe this is what he needs,โ Titan adds.
โWhat are you talking about?โ
โHeโs spent his whole life only caring about himself.โ
โThatโs harsh. How would you feel if Athenaโโ Shit. Athena.
I quickly mindlink several guards, ordering them to secure the perimeter of the house.
โLetโs assume heโs escaped.โ Though walking out shouldnโt have been possible. โHow did he shift?โ I ask Zachary.
โI donโt know. He hasnโt been human in over a year. And like I said, he never wanted to change back. Trust me, I tried to help him. Brianna did too. He never wanted it. The only explanation is that heโs been shifting for a while now. He must have kept it hidden.โ
โAlexander.โ Theodoreโs voice echoes in my head. โHeโs gone.โ
โWhat?โ
โHe isnโt here. According to Ethan, he did shift back to human form.โ
โHow the hell did he get out?โ I snap.
The Rogue had been chained to a wall.
If he shifted, he could have slipped the chains. That much I understand.
But the cell was still locked.
The only way out was if someone physically let him out.
Not to mention, he wouldnโt have been able to just walk away. I saw what Athena did to his leg.
If we believe Ethan, heโs also claiming that Sophia was the one who helped Gabriel escape.
I glance at Julian, sitting silently on the floor. Heโs gently stroking Sophiaโs red hair.
Why would she help Gabriel? It makes no sense. She loved Athena. She stood against the woman who changed her, all to protect Athena.
โIโm right, arenโt I?โ Zachary asks. โI can see it on your face. And I know what I scent. I am right.โ
โIs he?โ Isabella presses. โHas Gabriel escaped? Has he shifted? Is he out there, moving through the pack like he belongs here?โ
โYes.โ
โNo.โ Zachary cuts me off. โHe wouldnโt be that stupid. Heโll hunker down somewhere. Somewhere he can hide in plain sight. Watching. Waiting. Heโll work carefully, spreading his scent throughout the entire pack.โ
โThis is your fault!โ Julian snarls from the floor. โYou! He came here because of you. Youโd better sleep with one eye open, Lycan.โ
Zachary doesnโt respond. Heโs quiet, deep in thought, completely unbothered by my brotherโs threat.
โYouโre hiding something.โ Isabellaโs voice whispers through our mindlink.
I look over at her. Her arms are crossed tightly over her chest as she stares at me. โI know you, Alexander. Thereโs something youโre not saying.โ
โAccording to Ethan, Sophia let him out.โ
โWHAT?!โ she shouts aloud, forgetting to keep the conversation private.
Everyone turns to look at her. She quickly drops her gaze.
โWhatโs going on?โ Zachary asks, stepping closer to my sister.
โSorry,โ Isabella mumbles.
โLook, I donโt know if itโs true. All we have is Ethanโs word, and heโs not exactly known for his honesty.โ
โHe saw him shift?โ Zachary frowns.
โAnd he saw who let him out. Which Iโm taking with a grain of salt!โ
โLet me guess. She did.โ He points at Sophia. โI canโt scent anyone else on her.โ
