Chapter 0197

The thought made my stomach churn. โ€œDid theyโ€ฆ touch her?โ€

โ€œNot in that way, I believe.โ€ Zacharyโ€™s voice was low. โ€œI questioned her carefully. They made her crawl. Drink from a bowl like an animal. Threw scraps at her. Forced her to sleep on cold floors. She has some bruises, but nothing more.โ€

โ€œHer parents?โ€

โ€œAll humans. No other wolves. Gabriel killed every one of them.โ€ He sighed. โ€œSheโ€™s six. Spent most of her life in chains. Itโ€™s a miracle she isnโ€™t completely wild.โ€

I was six when my world fell apart. She was even younger. Didnโ€™t understand why any of this was happening.

โ€œYou brought her here because of me,โ€ I whispered, watching the sleeping child in his arms.

โ€œYes.โ€ His answer was immediate.

โ€œWhat about Gabriel?โ€ Isabellaโ€™s voice was tense. โ€œHeโ€™ll come straight for her.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s safer here among wolves and Lycans. At least she can learn what she is. Imagine if she shifted among humans with no control.โ€

His words dragged Caleb back into my mind. I shoved the memory away. How much of what he said was even true?

โ€œAlright,โ€ I murmured.

โ€œThank you, Athena. You wonโ€™t regret this.โ€

Zacharyโ€™s gaze shifted to Isabella. She had been quiet. โ€œAlexander, would you mind holding Lottie? I need to speak with my mate.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s your responsibility, Zachary,โ€ Alexander warned.

โ€œHe will.โ€ I cut in.

Alexander shot me a look but held out his arms. Charlotte snuggled against his chest. The sight of him holding her made my heart swell.

He noticed my expression. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

I smiled and nodded. Maybe things would be alright.

Alexander set up a small fold-out bed in our room for Charlotte. Zachary and Isabella were still talking outside. It was getting late.

He had skipped the pack run again. Tonightโ€™s events made it necessary.

Charlotte was still asleep when he laid her down. He tucked the blanket around her and made sure her teddy bear was close. I didnโ€™t know how long Iโ€™d been asleep when the whimpering started.

I sat up and turned on the lamp. Alexander was already moving toward her. He wasnโ€™t happy about wearing shorts to bed.

She lashed out as he tried to calm her. Her nails scratched his cheek. The marks vanished instantly.

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t know itโ€™s you,โ€ I said softly. Her eyes were squeezed shut. Sweat beaded on her forehead. She began to cry, calling out for โ€œDaddy.โ€

โ€œCharlotte,โ€ I whispered. โ€œItโ€™s Athena. Youโ€™re safe.โ€

โ€œDaddy!โ€ she screamed.

Our door nearly splintered as Zachary burst in.

Her cries softened into sobs as he gathered her into his arms. He murmured soothing words to her.

โ€œSay what you want, Zachary,โ€ Alexander smirked. โ€œBut youโ€™re a dad now.โ€

Isabella paced my room. Her limp was less noticeable now. โ€œWhat am I supposed to do, Athena? He was gone for a month. Comes back with another female.โ€

โ€œA child,โ€ I corrected. It was too early for this.

โ€œIโ€™m not ready to be a mother. I thought weโ€™d have amazing sex. Instead, he brings someone else.โ€

โ€œA six-year-old.โ€

โ€œHow am I supposed to compete with that?โ€

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t want you to compete. Youโ€™re his mate.โ€

โ€œShe calls him Daddy.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s insane.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not. He saved her from a nightmare. It wouldโ€™ve gotten worse as she grew. He protected her. Like a father should.โ€ Unlike my own.

โ€œIโ€™m jealous of a six-year-old!โ€ She groaned and dropped into the chair by the window.

โ€œBasically. But sheโ€™s more like you than him. Sheโ€™ll need guidance. Help understanding sheโ€™s a wolf. Zachary canโ€™t do that alone. Give her time to adjust.โ€

She nodded. โ€œLook at you. So understanding.โ€

โ€œI know what itโ€™s like to live in fear.โ€
