Chapter 0474

Athena

โ€œWhy is there no news?โ€ I ask Zachary. The sun would rise soon, yet we heard nothing. Neither Theodore nor Evelyn had linked us.

I glance back over my shoulder. We were about a mile from home. Alexander must still be asleep, or he would be in my head, questioning my location.

โ€œA little longer,โ€ Zachary mutters. โ€œUnless you can get into his mind.โ€

โ€œI tried,โ€ I sigh. โ€œItโ€™s the same as alwaysโ€”nothing. I justโ€ฆ I need him dead. This urge to end him is overwhelming.โ€

Thereโ€™s still time. Theodore knows what to do.

How can you be so sure everything will work?

I have a hunch. Maybe you should talk about something else.

I nod. โ€œDid you know Alexander was a twin?โ€

โ€œNo, I didnโ€™t.โ€ He furrows his brow. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

Stillborn. Theodore told me. I probably shouldnโ€™t discuss it before speaking to Alexander, but Zachary was rightโ€”I needed a distraction. Nyx was no help at all.

โ€œAnd youโ€™re worried?โ€ he asks.

Everyone keeps saying Iโ€™m automatically carrying more than one. What if itโ€™s true and something goes wrong?

The boys are healthy, he tells me through a yawn.

โ€œThis doesnโ€™t stop,โ€ I say, pointing to my head.

โ€œItโ€™s good that youโ€™re concerned. Iโ€™d worry if you werenโ€™t.โ€ He smiles at me. โ€œYouโ€™ll find out soon. If youโ€™re still worried, just have Theodore do more scans.โ€

Theodore is leaving.

Since when?

โ€œHe told me heโ€™s leaving after we kill Levi. He wants to find his place. I donโ€™t want him to go, but I understand,โ€ I sigh.

โ€œWe all want to find our place in the world, Athena. Itโ€™s not the same for everyone.โ€

We stand in silence, hidden by the trees as the sun rises. โ€œWe should go after them,โ€ I mutter.

โ€œNo, we donโ€™t need to.โ€ He points up the road. Theodore is pushing Levi forward. Levi stumbles, struggling to stay upright. Evelyn is talking to another female.

โ€œWho is that?โ€ I ask quietly.

โ€œNo idea. Definitely a Wolf, but her scent is faint.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not from this pack,โ€ I mutter.

โ€œNo, she isnโ€™t,โ€ he confirms, his dark eyes fixed on the road as they approach.

Three times, Theodore has to pull Levi up from the ground. Levi is clearly falling on purpose, looking for an escape.

Zachary steps slightly in front of me. Itโ€™s his instinct when he senses a threat.

โ€œWho are you?โ€ he demands, his eyes locking on the long-haired woman.

Her golden eyes widen. She wasnโ€™t expecting such a blunt greeting. Itโ€™s how Theodore and Zachary differ.

โ€œHer name is Jasmine,โ€ Theodore answers for her. โ€œLevi was holding her hostage. He took her abilities.โ€

Not all, since she still has a trace of scent, Zachary glares at her.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t do it the same way as the others,โ€ Theodore explains.

A spell, Jasmine adds.

โ€œAnd you brought her here?โ€ Zachary asks.

โ€œWeโ€™re not inside Obsidian Howl yet,โ€ Theodore replies. His deep green eyes settle on me. โ€œAre you or Alexander aware that Crestwood City changed its name to Dawnmist?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œIt was a forced change,โ€ Jasmine adds. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t our Alpha. The new guy takes over.โ€

โ€œSo you thought we would take her in?โ€ I ask with a frown. I didnโ€™t want any part of this.

Theodore doesnโ€™t answer.

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ Jasmine tells us. โ€œI understand.โ€ Her gaze shifts to Theodore, who is holding Levi steady. โ€œI told you this was a mistake. Iโ€™m better off alone. I can figure it out.โ€
