Chapter 0241

Athena

The twins slept through the entire night.

Not a single cry or whimper.

It should have been a relief, but part of me wished their first night alone hadnโ€™t been so flawless.

While they slept, Alexander made up for every moment weโ€™d lost since their birth.

I could still feel the effects this morning.

โ€œGood thing they slept,โ€ Isabella murmured, bouncing Evrin gently.

โ€œI know. Iโ€™m just beingโ€ฆโ€ I sighed.

โ€œYouโ€™re being a mom.โ€ Her dark eyes lifted to meet mine, and I knew what was coming. โ€œYouโ€™re really meeting with her?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œAre you nervous?โ€

โ€œWorried I might shift and kill her,โ€ I joked, but she stared back, alarmed. โ€œKidding. Iโ€™m kidding. I stayed calm when Seraphina visited. I can do it again.โ€

โ€œZachary said he wouldโ€”โ€

โ€œI know, and I appreciate it. But this is something I need to do alone.โ€ I sighed heavily. โ€œIโ€™ve been torn over this for too long.โ€

I hadnโ€™t spoken about it to anyone.

Most believed I despised Brianna.

But that wasnโ€™t entirely true.

I didnโ€™t trust her. Or her motives.

โ€œYou never said anything.โ€

โ€œI felt like I was supposed to hate her. And I did. She almost killed me. She thought she had.โ€ I shook my head, lifting Logan from his high chair. โ€œI couldโ€™ve ended her life multiple times. But I didnโ€™t. Sheโ€™s Zacharyโ€™s closest friend. He sees something in her that I donโ€™t. Or maybe itโ€™s just history.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œIโ€™m giving her this one chance. To clear the air.โ€

โ€œIf you need backup,โ€ Isabella said softly, โ€œyou know where I am.โ€

I set Logan down on the rug surrounded by toys and kissed his head. Then I kissed Evrin. โ€œYouโ€™re sure youโ€™re okay watching them?โ€

โ€œAbsolutely.โ€

I took a deep breath and stepped out the back door.

I walked toward Briannaโ€™s house.

She flung the door open before I could knock.

A wide smile stretched across her face.

Her dirty blonde hair was half-up, half-down.

She wore dungarees over a white tank top.

A cleaning rag was clutched in one hand.

โ€œYou actually came,โ€ she said, sounding genuinely surprised.

She tossed the rag out of sight.

I nodded.

She moved aside to let me enter.

Iโ€™d avoided her small home until now.

Her eyes darted behind me. โ€œZacharyโ€™s not with you?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ She sucked in her cheeks.

โ€œI wanted to come alone.โ€

โ€œRight.โ€ She gestured toward a small wooden table.

A steaming teapot sat in the center, surrounded by cups and biscuits.

โ€œWasnโ€™t sure what you preferred. I have coffee too.โ€ She motioned toward the kitchen counter.

She seemed nervous. A far cry from the arrogant woman she used to be.

โ€œPlease sit,โ€ she whispered, chewing her bottom lip. โ€œAsk me anything. Iโ€™ll tell you everything. I promise.โ€

I chose the chair facing the front door.

She slid quietly into the one across from me.

Her brown eyes avoided mine at first, as if she was deciding how to begin.

โ€œYou ran,โ€ I stated. โ€œAfter you thought you killed me, you fled.โ€

She nodded. โ€œI always swore I wouldnโ€™t become my father. But I did. When I stood over you, watching you bleed, I knew my life was over. I had become him. I hated myself.โ€

โ€œWe have that in common,โ€ she added quietly. โ€œNeither of us wanted to be like our parents.โ€

I swallowed hard, fighting the irritation that flared at her comparing us. โ€œYou killed your father?โ€

โ€œI had to.โ€

โ€œAfter me?โ€

She nodded, cheeks hollow. โ€œI became the thing I feared most. At the time, that mattered more than turning into a Lycan. Becoming Lycan was supposed to be my fresh start. A chance to belong to a pack that valued me.โ€

I scoffed, but she continued.

โ€œInstead, I became even more like what I hated. So I hunted him. I killed him. Then I ran.โ€

โ€œYou watched your father murder your mother?โ€

โ€œI saw worse growing up. He raped her. He beat her.โ€ Her voice grew darker. Tears welled in her eyes. โ€œHe put cigarettes out on her skin. Once, she dropped his plate. He made her lick the food off the floor. The list goes on.โ€

My stomach dropped.

That was degradation I had never experienced.

โ€˜Fucker,โ€™ Nyx muttered inside my head.
