Chapter 0141

โ€œBy this Zachary guy?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œAfter what she did to me?โ€

โ€œWhat she did was horrendous, I am not disputing that. And I am thankful that she didnโ€™t kill you. But just like you are haunted by your parents death, she is haunted by what she did to you.โ€

โ€œGood!โ€ I lie back and glare at the ceiling. โ€œShe deserves to be haunted.โ€

He stays silent and finishes his shower while I simmer in the quiet. Soon, he slips into bed and pulls me close. โ€œI am not asking you to forgive her. I am not asking you to become friends with her.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand why she is here.โ€ I whisper, holding back tears.

โ€œShe didn't have to help me find Sophia, but she did anyway. Without her, Sophia might not be here.โ€

โ€œThat doesn't answer my question.โ€

His hands settle on my stomach as he sighs. "I donโ€™t have an answer right now. Or at least nothing that will make you feel better.โ€

I sit up and stare at him. โ€œYou always have an answer.โ€

He says nothing. In the dim light, I watch his chest rise and fall. This wasn't like him. He always had answers. His silence unnerved me as much as Brianna's presence.

At the breakfast table, I bury my face in my hands. I felt awful.

โ€œCome on.โ€ Theodore speaks gently. โ€œYouโ€™re almost done.โ€ He points to the book before me.

โ€œSorry,โ€ I mumble.

โ€œAlexander mentioned you weren't feeling well this morning.โ€ He offers a kind smile.

โ€œNo one warned me about this part of pregnancy. And I'm so sick of ginger biscuits!โ€

He chuckles and taps the book again. โ€œTry to focus.โ€

I read a few lines and look up. โ€œHas he said anything to you?โ€

โ€œAbout Brianna? No.โ€

โ€œBut he's with her right now.โ€ I glance toward the window.

โ€œHe said heโ€™s giving her a tour.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t get to ask. But I assume itโ€™s so she knows her way around.โ€

โ€œDo you think heโ€™s mated to her? Is that why heโ€™s so welcoming?โ€

โ€œWhat?!โ€ Theodore chokes on his drink, spilling it across the table and my book.

โ€œIt's just... I was mated to Marcus and Alexander at the same time. He could have another mate.โ€

โ€œThat explains why you look exhausted. Were you up all night worrying about that?โ€

I avoid his gaze.

โ€œAthena, I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s your hormones or youโ€™re genuinely overthinking, but thereโ€™s no way. Alexander is honest. You know how long he searched for you.โ€ He shuts the book. โ€œLetโ€™s go for a walk.โ€

โ€˜Iโ€™m supposed to be resting.โ€

โ€œWhat good is rest if youโ€™re just lying there stressing?โ€

Stepping into the warm morning sun, I spot Alexander standing alone. His arms are crossed as he watches the pack.

โ€œYou should be in bed if youโ€™re not studying!โ€ He grumbles as we approach.

โ€œWhere's Brianna?โ€ I demand, and he raises a brow.

โ€œGetting settled in her temporary quarters.โ€ His crimson eyes shift to Theodore. "Give us a moment?โ€

Theodore says heโ€™ll catch up later and winks as he leaves.

I take a deep breath and ask the question that haunted me all night. โ€œIs there something between you two?โ€

โ€˜I've been waiting for you to ask since I read your thoughts last night.โ€ He smiles, trying to ease the tension.

โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ He pulls me into his arms. โ€œYou are my only mate. You are the one I love. You are the one carrying my children.โ€

โ€œThen help me understand because I feel like Iโ€™m going crazy!โ€ I fight back tears.

โ€œI think she can help you.โ€

I open my mouth to respond, but only shake my head in confusion.

โ€œAthena, if youโ€™re carrying Lycans, we need someone with more experience. Itโ€™s new to you, new to most of us here. Sheโ€™s not the person she was. But sheโ€™s lived as one much longer than you have.โ€

Images flash in my mind. Her hands gripping my face, her thumbs inches from my eyes as she slammed my head back repeatedly. Pain shoots through my skull as if itโ€™s happening now.

โ€œThe others who hurt you kept hurting you. She left because she couldnโ€™t live with what she did, and sheโ€™s carried that guilt ever since.โ€

โ€œShe told me the same thing.โ€ I mutter.

โ€œYou donโ€™t believe her, or you choose not to?โ€
