Chapter 0141
โBy this Zachary guy?โ
โYes.โ
โAfter what she did to me?โ
โWhat she did was horrendous, I am not disputing that. And I am thankful that she didnโt kill you. But just like you are haunted by your parents death, she is haunted by what she did to you.โ
โGood!โ I lie back and glare at the ceiling. โShe deserves to be haunted.โ
He stays silent and finishes his shower while I simmer in the quiet. Soon, he slips into bed and pulls me close. โI am not asking you to forgive her. I am not asking you to become friends with her.โ
โI donโt understand why she is here.โ I whisper, holding back tears.
โShe didn't have to help me find Sophia, but she did anyway. Without her, Sophia might not be here.โ
โThat doesn't answer my question.โ
His hands settle on my stomach as he sighs. "I donโt have an answer right now. Or at least nothing that will make you feel better.โ
I sit up and stare at him. โYou always have an answer.โ
He says nothing. In the dim light, I watch his chest rise and fall. This wasn't like him. He always had answers. His silence unnerved me as much as Brianna's presence.
At the breakfast table, I bury my face in my hands. I felt awful.
โCome on.โ Theodore speaks gently. โYouโre almost done.โ He points to the book before me.
โSorry,โ I mumble.
โAlexander mentioned you weren't feeling well this morning.โ He offers a kind smile.
โNo one warned me about this part of pregnancy. And I'm so sick of ginger biscuits!โ
He chuckles and taps the book again. โTry to focus.โ
I read a few lines and look up. โHas he said anything to you?โ
โAbout Brianna? No.โ
โBut he's with her right now.โ I glance toward the window.
โHe said heโs giving her a tour.โ
โWhy?โ
โI didnโt get to ask. But I assume itโs so she knows her way around.โ
โDo you think heโs mated to her? Is that why heโs so welcoming?โ
โWhat?!โ Theodore chokes on his drink, spilling it across the table and my book.
โIt's just... I was mated to Marcus and Alexander at the same time. He could have another mate.โ
โThat explains why you look exhausted. Were you up all night worrying about that?โ
I avoid his gaze.
โAthena, I donโt know if itโs your hormones or youโre genuinely overthinking, but thereโs no way. Alexander is honest. You know how long he searched for you.โ He shuts the book. โLetโs go for a walk.โ
โIโm supposed to be resting.โ
โWhat good is rest if youโre just lying there stressing?โ
Stepping into the warm morning sun, I spot Alexander standing alone. His arms are crossed as he watches the pack.
โYou should be in bed if youโre not studying!โ He grumbles as we approach.
โWhere's Brianna?โ I demand, and he raises a brow.
โGetting settled in her temporary quarters.โ His crimson eyes shift to Theodore. "Give us a moment?โ
Theodore says heโll catch up later and winks as he leaves.
I take a deep breath and ask the question that haunted me all night. โIs there something between you two?โ
โI've been waiting for you to ask since I read your thoughts last night.โ He smiles, trying to ease the tension.
โAnd?โ
โNo.โ He pulls me into his arms. โYou are my only mate. You are the one I love. You are the one carrying my children.โ
โThen help me understand because I feel like Iโm going crazy!โ I fight back tears.
โI think she can help you.โ
I open my mouth to respond, but only shake my head in confusion.
โAthena, if youโre carrying Lycans, we need someone with more experience. Itโs new to you, new to most of us here. Sheโs not the person she was. But sheโs lived as one much longer than you have.โ
Images flash in my mind. Her hands gripping my face, her thumbs inches from my eyes as she slammed my head back repeatedly. Pain shoots through my skull as if itโs happening now.
โThe others who hurt you kept hurting you. She left because she couldnโt live with what she did, and sheโs carried that guilt ever since.โ
โShe told me the same thing.โ I mutter.
โYou donโt believe her, or you choose not to?โ
