Chapter 0159
My frown deepens. โHe said I should believe that he would be the only one who ever wants our pups. What if heโs right? Have you heard anything from his pack? Crestwood City?โ
โHeโs messing with your head, Athena. Ethan will be executed publicly tomorrow. Nothing he says matters.โ He presses a soft kiss against my cheek. โBut yes, Iโve received word from Crestwood. It seems Ethan grew too power-hungry. The Beta has taken over as Alpha. He assured me the pack is relieved to see him gone.โ
I furrow my brows. It took me time to understand the bond between an Alpha and Beta. I always assumed they were unshakable. But my only references were Dominic and Marcus, and Alexander and Sebastian.
โSo they wonโt retaliate?โ
โIt doesnโt appear so.โ
โWhat about the Rogue, Gabriel? Will his sentence be carried out tomorrow?โ
โIsabella requested to speak with him first.โ
I jolt in surprise. โWhat?โ
โShe asked. I agreed. Maybe she can get him to talk. He hasnโt said a word to you, no matter how many times youโve tried.โ
Iโm shocked Alexander allowed it. Especially after what Gabriel did to her.
โAre you certain thatโs safe?โ I whisper.
โZachary and I will be with her. She wonโt be alone.โ
Later that evening, the three of them headed toward the dungeons. Isabella hobbled on crutches, much to Zacharyโs visible frustration.
โSheโll be alright,โ Sebastian murmurs beside me.
โYou canโt know that.โ
โYouโre right, I donโt. But neither of them will let any harm come to her.โ
I watch until they disappear from view, then turn back inside.
โWhat answers were you hoping to get from him?โ Sebastian asks, following me.
โIโm not sure.โ
โReally? Youโve been sneaking down to that dungeon for days. You must have wanted something specific.โ
โI wanted to understand how he became like that. But he refuses to answer anything.โ
โYou wanted to know how he turned Rogue?โ
I nod, a lump forming in my throat.
He studies me for a moment. โThat wonโt happen to you.โ
โYou canโt know that.โ
โDo you crave the taste of flesh?โ I hear the hint of amusement in his voice.
โNo. But what if I break? Or lose control? What if Iโm tempted into it? What if something so terrible happens that I let Nyx take over completely? What ifโโ
โAthena, thatโs too many โwhat ifsโ.โ He grins. โYouโve only fully shifted a few times, and only briefly. It would take a catastrophic event for you to become permanently like them. You have Alexander. You have the entire pack behind you. You arenโt a lone Lycan. Right now, you donโt need to worry about them. We have it handled. I promise.โ
Maybe I was overthinking it. Maybe Iโd let the silent Rogue get inside my head.
I nod as we walk toward the kitchen.
โDo you think there are more?โ I ask quietly.
โRogues? According to Theodore, itโs highly likely. We donโt know how many they marked. Brianna said the others found her over two years. So yes, there are probably more out there.โ
โAnd in the forest,โ I continue. โIt was like my body knew where to go. Like Nyx could sense them, but I couldnโt. How is that possible?โ
โDid Nyx know?โ
โNo, I didnโt!โ she snaps.
โShe says no. How, Sebastian? How was I able to track him without ever seeing him?โ
He smiles. โYouโre an Alpha, Athena. Itโs in your blood.โ
