Chapter 0159

My frown deepens. โ€œHe said I should believe that he would be the only one who ever wants our pups. What if heโ€™s right? Have you heard anything from his pack? Crestwood City?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s messing with your head, Athena. Ethan will be executed publicly tomorrow. Nothing he says matters.โ€ He presses a soft kiss against my cheek. โ€œBut yes, Iโ€™ve received word from Crestwood. It seems Ethan grew too power-hungry. The Beta has taken over as Alpha. He assured me the pack is relieved to see him gone.โ€

I furrow my brows. It took me time to understand the bond between an Alpha and Beta. I always assumed they were unshakable. But my only references were Dominic and Marcus, and Alexander and Sebastian.

โ€œSo they wonโ€™t retaliate?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t appear so.โ€

โ€œWhat about the Rogue, Gabriel? Will his sentence be carried out tomorrow?โ€

โ€œIsabella requested to speak with him first.โ€

I jolt in surprise. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œShe asked. I agreed. Maybe she can get him to talk. He hasnโ€™t said a word to you, no matter how many times youโ€™ve tried.โ€

Iโ€™m shocked Alexander allowed it. Especially after what Gabriel did to her.

โ€œAre you certain thatโ€™s safe?โ€ I whisper.

โ€œZachary and I will be with her. She wonโ€™t be alone.โ€

Later that evening, the three of them headed toward the dungeons. Isabella hobbled on crutches, much to Zacharyโ€™s visible frustration.

โ€œSheโ€™ll be alright,โ€ Sebastian murmurs beside me.

โ€œYou canโ€™t know that.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right, I donโ€™t. But neither of them will let any harm come to her.โ€

I watch until they disappear from view, then turn back inside.

โ€œWhat answers were you hoping to get from him?โ€ Sebastian asks, following me.

โ€œIโ€™m not sure.โ€

โ€œReally? Youโ€™ve been sneaking down to that dungeon for days. You must have wanted something specific.โ€

โ€œI wanted to understand how he became like that. But he refuses to answer anything.โ€

โ€œYou wanted to know how he turned Rogue?โ€

I nod, a lump forming in my throat.

He studies me for a moment. โ€œThat wonโ€™t happen to you.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t know that.โ€

โ€œDo you crave the taste of flesh?โ€ I hear the hint of amusement in his voice.

โ€œNo. But what if I break? Or lose control? What if Iโ€™m tempted into it? What if something so terrible happens that I let Nyx take over completely? What ifโ€”โ€

โ€œAthena, thatโ€™s too many โ€˜what ifsโ€™.โ€ He grins. โ€œYouโ€™ve only fully shifted a few times, and only briefly. It would take a catastrophic event for you to become permanently like them. You have Alexander. You have the entire pack behind you. You arenโ€™t a lone Lycan. Right now, you donโ€™t need to worry about them. We have it handled. I promise.โ€

Maybe I was overthinking it. Maybe Iโ€™d let the silent Rogue get inside my head.

I nod as we walk toward the kitchen.

โ€œDo you think there are more?โ€ I ask quietly.

โ€œRogues? According to Theodore, itโ€™s highly likely. We donโ€™t know how many they marked. Brianna said the others found her over two years. So yes, there are probably more out there.โ€

โ€œAnd in the forest,โ€ I continue. โ€œIt was like my body knew where to go. Like Nyx could sense them, but I couldnโ€™t. How is that possible?โ€

โ€œDid Nyx know?โ€

โ€œNo, I didnโ€™t!โ€ she snaps.

โ€œShe says no. How, Sebastian? How was I able to track him without ever seeing him?โ€

He smiles. โ€œYouโ€™re an Alpha, Athena. Itโ€™s in your blood.โ€
