Chapter 0245

Seraphina

I down another gulp of wine, my blood boiling. โ€œYou want to bring in someone else to assist me?โ€ Julianโ€™s dark eyes remain fixed on me. He still hadnโ€™t grasped the simple fact that aside from him, no one else worked for me. Or with me.

โ€œAthena despises her. You witnessed it yourself when Brianna leaped from that tree. The fury in Athenaโ€™s eyes was unmistakable.โ€

โ€œThen why is the girl still breathing?โ€ I refill my glass as he searches for a response. โ€œAccording to your intel, how long have they been in the pack? A year?โ€

โ€œApproximately.โ€ He shrugs, as if the timeline is irrelevant. โ€œPerhaps my brother is preventing it.โ€

I let out a derisive snort, suppressing the hysterical laugh threatening to escape. โ€œThat never stopped her before.โ€ Julian had detailed all the others my dear sister had eliminated. So what made this Brianna so exceptionally special?

โ€œWouldnโ€™t an inside contact be advantageous?โ€ he presses.

โ€œAnd you believe she is that contact. How do you expect her to gather intel if Athena loathes her?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s Damienโ€™s closest friend.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€ I counter. โ€œThat means nothing if they arenโ€™t sharing secrets. I will admit, Iโ€™m impressed she located my home. Sheโ€™s the first to ever manage that.โ€ I pinch the bridge of my nose, a headache forming. โ€œRepeat everything she told you. Now.โ€

He rolls his eyes but complies, recounting Briannaโ€™s words. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you just mind-link me?โ€ I demand when he finishes.

โ€œIโ€™m not a complete fool. Thatโ€™s precisely what she wanted. I needed to interrogate her first. Gauge her true allegiance.โ€

I roll my eyes right back at him and take another large swallow of wine. โ€œMy point is, hearing it firsthand allows me to detect lies. Secondhand information is unreliable.โ€

โ€œShe wasnโ€™t lying.โ€ His tone is utterly confident, but confidence doesnโ€™t equate to correctness. Iโ€™ve spent decades surrounded by liars. Very few are ever convincing. โ€œIf Alexander had sent her, he would have provided a pack vehicle. Not some beat-up rust bucket she hotwired. I know how Alexander operates. He always flaunts his power.โ€

โ€œUnless Alexander wasnโ€™t the one who sent her,โ€ I suggest.

Now itโ€™s his turn to roll his eyes. โ€œMust you challenge everything I say?โ€

โ€œOh, honey,โ€ I purr, a cold smile touching my lips. โ€œIโ€™ve been playing this game far longer than you. You may be older, but your tactics are all pack-learned. You see only the immediate threat. You solve only the obvious problem. You consistently miss the larger chessboard. You were merely surviving on your own before I found you.โ€

I pause, watching him huff in irritation. Why do men always resist the truth? Why must they always assume control and believe their plans are infallible?

โ€œIf she shows up againโ€”and she undoubtedly willโ€”you call for me immediately.โ€

He gives a curt nod of acknowledgment. Iโ€™m already calculating, trying to discern if her curiosity was genuine or a clever ruse to gather information for Alexander and Athena.

Brianna returns the very next evening. Her dirty blonde hair is tied in a loose, messy bun atop her head. Strands frame her pretty face. She checks her reflection in the rearview mirror before stepping out of the old red car.

โ€œHello, Brianna,โ€ I murmur, emerging from the shadows.

She doesnโ€™t startle at my voice like most would. โ€œI wasnโ€™t expecting you.โ€

โ€œYou were hoping for my mate?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ she replies, folding her arms across her chest. โ€œSince he was here yesterday, I assumed it would be him. Besides, he made it clear he wouldnโ€™t let me speak to you.โ€ Her chocolate-brown eyes drop to my hands. โ€œI see no gun. I hope that means youโ€™re not going to shoot me.โ€
