Chapter 0214

Athena

โ€œBreathe.โ€ Isabella whispers.

I snap back instantly. โ€œIโ€™m not dead, am I? So obviously Iโ€™m breathing!โ€

I freeze mid-step, realizing how harsh I sounded.

Glancing over my shoulder, I see the hurt flash in her eyes. She was only trying to help.

The darkness had such a fierce grip on my heart it clouded everythingโ€”except thoughts of my sons.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I murmur, hoping she feels the sincerity.

โ€œItโ€™s happening, isnโ€™t it? Youโ€™re slipping.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ Iโ€™m trying not to.โ€

My gaze drops to my hands. I carefully run my fingers over the tips. The emerging claws felt terrible and wonderful all at once. Like releasing pent-up pressure. Is this how Gabriel felt?

โ€œYou need to talk it out. Remember what Brianna saidโ€”look at the bigger picture. See beyond the moment. Make it all make sense.โ€

I roll my eyes. Brianna and her theories. Though I have to admit, they helped a little. Even if I still didnโ€™t trust her.

โ€œTell me again what the lookalike said.โ€

โ€œIsabellaโ€ฆโ€

She raises a brow and crosses her arms. โ€œShe told me we share the same father,โ€ I repeat.

โ€œBut you donโ€™t believe that?โ€

โ€œI believed Caleb more. And look how that turned out.โ€

โ€œBigger picture,โ€ she mutters.

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t believe it. I couldnโ€™t feel her. I couldnโ€™t sense her, only what she is. Itโ€™s hard to explain.โ€

โ€œTry.โ€ She offers a small smile.

โ€œWith Sophia, I felt her presence. Same with Zachary andโ€ฆ Brianna. The other turned onesโ€”I felt their fear when they realized they couldnโ€™t defy me. There was even a flicker of recognition from Gabriel. But with herโ€”nothing. She looked at me with those big brown puppy eyes, but you know what it reminded me of?โ€

Isabella shakes her head.

โ€œThe way Dominic used to look at me. It wasnโ€™t hate. It was more. Like I was something he stepped in and scraped off on the grass. Thatโ€™s exactly what I felt when she looked at me.โ€

โ€œWhat did she say about your parents?โ€

โ€œShe claimed our father chose my mother over hers when he found his mate. But it makes no sense. The one thing I remember from my childhood is how deeply they loved each other.โ€

โ€œLike how Alexander loves you?โ€

โ€œMore,โ€ I whisper. I couldnโ€™t describe it. I just remembered the feeling. Or maybe I saw what I wanted to see as a child.

โ€œSo sheโ€™s older than you, but youโ€™re the Alpha?โ€

I nod. โ€œI donโ€™t think sheโ€™s much older. Alexander believes the Alpha blood comes from my motherโ€™s side. But they didnโ€™t care enough to tell me before they died. Before I was set up.โ€ I hear the bitterness in my own voice and close my eyes, taking a deep breath.

We were set up. Nyx adds quietly. She wasnโ€™t sure what to make of this Seraphina woman either. I was glad she kept her thoughts to herself.

โ€œWhy did you start shifting?โ€ Isabella prods, tying her hair into a bun. She was trying to keep it casual, like we were discussing movies. But I saw it nowโ€”she was testing me. Searching for a trigger.

โ€œI didnโ€™t realize at first. Alexander noticed before I did.โ€

The claws retracted the moment she walked away. Alexander made me let her go. Then he ordered everyone: if I show up at the gates or anywhere along the border, check my eyes. If theyโ€™re anything but blue, call him immediately.

โ€œIsabella, what if Iโ€™m meant to let this darkness take over?โ€

Her dark eyes widen as she searches for an answer. Finally, she says, โ€œI donโ€™t believe that.โ€

โ€œZachary came back from that place,โ€ she adds with a faint smile. I knew she secretly worried about him slipping back every single day. Even when she didnโ€™t say it, I knewโ€”because Zachary would appear minutes later, wrapping her in his arms without a word.

โ€œBut the others didnโ€™t.โ€ I wasnโ€™t looking for an excuse to turnโ€”I wanted to understand if this was my future. Iโ€™d rather be prepared.

She puffs out her cheeks. She has no answer. I steer the conversation back to what happened with Seraphina.

โ€œI think it was because she mentioned the twins. Thatโ€™s what triggered the shift.โ€

Nyx?

Not me, Nyx murmurs. That was all you.

I shake my head and slump into the large armchair.

โ€œAh, so you went mama Lycan on her.โ€

I grimace. โ€œThatโ€™s a horrible term.โ€

โ€œI probably wouldโ€™ve killed her if Alexander hadnโ€™t stopped me.โ€
