Chapter 0039

Athena

I jolted upright in bed, disoriented. My mind was a foggy mess. I distinctly remembered heading toward the shower.

It took a moment to register my state of undress. I wore only my sweatshirt, my legs bare. My gaze darted across the room, landing on my discarded joggers and underwear draped over a chair. A wave of nausea hit me. Had Alexander done something while I was unconscious?

My eyes frantically scanned the room, searching for any sign of him.

โ€œStop overreacting, Athena,โ€ I muttered under my breath, scrambling out of bed. I hurried to the closet, grabbing fresh underwear and a pair of jeans.

There was no blood on the sheets. Everything seemed normal. Alexander had promised he would never cross that line. But what if Iโ€™d given involuntary consent while lost in a daydream?

I dressed quickly and slipped out of the room. On the stairs, I nearly collided with Alexander. His brow was furrowed deeply.

โ€œI was coming to check on you,โ€ he said, his voice tense. โ€œWe need to talk.โ€

A hard lump formed in my throat. Was he going to end our contract already? Or remind me yet again that I had insisted on it?

โ€œPlease, come to the office. Thereโ€™s a lot we need to discuss.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œAthena, I need you to engage with me. This is serious. I know youโ€™re upset, maybe even angry. But if this is going to be a one-sided conversation, I canโ€™t help you understand.โ€

I scowled. What was there to understand? I simply nodded.

Alexander rolled his eyes and stepped back against the railing, allowing me to pass. He followed a few steps behind, maintaining a careful distance.

In his office, he gestured for me to sit. He closed the door and slid the lock into place. My heart began to race. Iโ€™d never seen him lock this door before.

He remained behind me for a few seconds, doing something I couldnโ€™t see. Then he moved around the desk and took his seat. The deep frown still etched his features.

โ€œAthena, weโ€™re holding a man in the dungeon. He claims to be your brother.โ€

โ€œDominic?โ€ I asked, confused.

โ€œNo. He says heโ€™s your younger brother. His name is Caleb.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™tโ€ฆ There was only Dominic.โ€

โ€œI know thatโ€™s what you believe.โ€

Believe? Dominic was my only brother. Alexander had met him. He should know.

โ€œBut the prisoner insists Dominic isnโ€™t your brother. Biologically, heโ€™s your uncle. I have to admit, the family resemblance between this prisoner and you is striking. You and Dominic share no similar features.โ€

I looked everywhere but at him. Iโ€™d called Dominic brother until I was forced to address him as Alpha. There had never been anyone else.

โ€œAre youโ€ฆ Are you saying one of my parents had an affair?โ€

โ€œNo. He believes when you were bound the first time, he was erased from your memory. He didnโ€™t grow up in Silver Creek. He was rejected by the pack and eventually adopted by humans.โ€

His crimson eyes held mine as I struggled to process this. It sounded absurd.

โ€œYou are actually the eldest child of the Alpha. Thereโ€™s a reason you required a second binding,โ€ Alexander stated. โ€œWhen you turned eighteen, you were of age to assume the Alpha role. The Alpha gene surged within you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not an Alpha. Just look at me.โ€

โ€œYou may not believe it, but your blood tells a different story.โ€

I leaned my head back against the chair and closed my eyes. โ€œItโ€™s a lie.โ€

โ€œIs it? You were bound twice, Athena. Twice. I disagree with binding on principle, but twice? You would have to possess significant power. I think thereโ€™s truth in his story.โ€

โ€œYou believe him?โ€ I was shocked heโ€™d accept such a wild tale so readily.

โ€œHe isnโ€™t holding anything back.โ€

โ€œAre you going to kill him?โ€

โ€œNot at this time. Athena, look at me.โ€ I opened my eyes to find his focus entirely on me. The frown had finally vanished. โ€œDo you want to meet him?โ€

I shook my head.

โ€œIโ€™ll respect your decision. But may I ask why?โ€

I shrugged. I had no specific reason. I just didnโ€™t want to.

โ€œOkay,โ€ he muttered. He didnโ€™t press for an answer.

โ€œWhere did you find him?โ€ I asked softly.

โ€œSebastian found him while searching for Dominic and Victoria. The guy fell out of a tree.โ€

โ€œSo heโ€™s from Silver Creek?โ€ Curiosity got the better of me.

โ€œYes and no. Dominic expelled him. Apparently, heโ€™s been trying to help you.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œThe only thing he kept asking was if you were safe. If I had gotten you out. He hasnโ€™t demanded to see you. He just wants confirmation of your safety. And for me to tell you the truth.โ€

โ€œThat heโ€™s my brother?โ€

He clenched his jaw. โ€œUnfortunately, thereโ€™s more. He wasnโ€™t in human form when he fell.โ€

โ€œHe was a Wolf in a tree?โ€ Wolves canโ€™t climb trees, not in wolf form.

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t understand.โ€

โ€œHe resembled the creature that attacked my men.โ€ He studied my face closely. โ€œHe calls himself a Lycan.โ€

โ€œLyโ€ฆ Lycan.โ€ What in the world was a Lycan?

I pulled my knees to my chest, wrapping my arms around them.

โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know what that is.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not alone. Iโ€™ve been searching for information and found nothing. The prisoner claims the Silver Creek pack are the last of their kind. That theyโ€™re a dying race.โ€

It didnโ€™t sink in immediately. โ€œAre youโ€ฆ Am Iโ€ฆ Are you saying Iโ€™m one of them?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I whimpered. The beast that had attacked was hideous, a monster straight from a nightmare.

โ€œWe canโ€™t be certain, not until youโ€™re unbound.โ€

My whole life, Iโ€™d wondered what it would be like to shift. To run as fast as possible through the trees. I wondered if others truly enjoyed it. If they liked becoming an animal and feeling that total freedom. But I didnโ€™t want to become a monster.

โ€œDonโ€™t.โ€

He raised an eyebrow. โ€œDonโ€™t what?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t find someone who can unbind me. Please!โ€ I whispered.

He looked shocked. His eyes widened, eyebrows raised as he stared. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to be unbound?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNot if Iโ€™m going to become a monster.โ€

โ€œIs that truly what you want? Youโ€™ve been bound for nearly your entire life.โ€

โ€œThen it wonโ€™t make a difference, will it?โ€ I shrugged.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t be able to heal. You wonโ€™t be able to protect yourself. You wonโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œI understand,โ€ I whispered, lowering my head so he couldnโ€™t see the tears welling in my eyes.

He stood and moved to the window. I seized the opportunity to wipe my tears on my sleeve.

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ he asked quietly.

โ€œYesโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want to be a monster.โ€
