Chapter 0420

Zachary

I knock on the office door and get no answer. Thatโ€™s odd. I expected Alexander to be here already. The meeting with Caleb starts in less than five minutes.

I step inside and move to the far right corner. I position myself behind the desk, near the window. I need a clear view of everyone in the room.

Luc shows up next. He spins in front of me deliberately. He lifts his shirt just enough to prove he isnโ€™t hiding weapons in his belt.

โ€œYou actually listened for once.โ€ I mutter.

โ€œIt might shock you, but I care about my daughter. I can follow rules when it matters.โ€

I donโ€™t answer. Alexander walks in yawning. โ€œI need to talk to both of you after this.โ€

โ€œAbout my little girl?โ€ Luc asks.

โ€œNoโ€ฆโ€

Heโ€™s cut off as Caleb arrives. Caleb checks his watch. โ€œIโ€™m not late, am I?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right on time.โ€ Alexander tells him. โ€œTake a seat.โ€

โ€œWhat about my daughter and his kid? Shouldnโ€™t they be here too?โ€ Luc challenges. โ€œSince this is about them.โ€

โ€œDO NOT call him that.โ€ Caleb growls through clenched teeth.

โ€œI donโ€™t want either of you speaking.โ€ Alexanderโ€™s crimson eyes shift between them. โ€œYou both need to listen.โ€

He points at me. He already asked me to explain how I found Charlotte. He believes it will help Caleb understand. โ€œDo you know how Charlotte lived when she was young?โ€ I ask carefully.

โ€œYes, I know what Seraphina did.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not talking about Seraphina. Iโ€™m talking about the Humans she sold her to.โ€

โ€œThis has nothing to do with her attacking my son.โ€

โ€œMaybe not. But you deserve to know. It might help us understand why she pinned Liam down.โ€

Even Luc doesnโ€™t know the full truth about how I found her. He only heard bits and pieces. As long as she was safe, he was satisfied. But I often wonder if he noticed the cracks in her soul too and just stayed silent.

His eyes flash toward me. I can see his anger rising to the surface. He paces in the background. His hands are balled into fists. Heโ€™s like a live grenade, ready to explode.

'Tread carefully.' Alexander links me while watching Luc.

'Heโ€™s unarmed.' But that doesnโ€™t mean Luc wonโ€™t hit something.

โ€œShe was just a child.โ€ Caleb mutters sadly as I finish explaining how she ate from a bowl like a dog the first night I saved her.

โ€œShe learned to survive on nothing. She had nightmares for almost a year. They finally eased to maybe once a week.โ€ I glance at Luc. Heโ€™s staring into space, probably imagining how heโ€™ll make Seraphina suffer for what she did to his child. โ€œCharlotte has kept everything bottled up for so long. I knew one day she would explode. She didnโ€™t attack him for fun. She attacked Liam because of what he said.โ€

Caleb looks down.

โ€œHe hasnโ€™t told you what he said, has he?โ€ Alexander asks.

โ€œHeโ€™s sticking to the same story. He claims he asked for a pencil and she snapped. But I know itโ€™s not the whole truth. She has nightmares; he sleeps soundly, without a care.โ€

โ€œHe called her poison. Told her someone would kill her in her sleep.โ€ I mutter. Hearing Brianna tell me that made my blood boil. โ€œHe wouldnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHe did.โ€

Caleb narrows his eyes at me. โ€œShe told you that.โ€

โ€œNo, she confided in a friend. I believe her.โ€

โ€œMy son wouldnโ€™t say something like that.โ€ Caleb shakes his head dismissively.

โ€œThen bring him in here! Iโ€™ll find out if the little liar is telling the truth!โ€ Luc snarls.

Alexander raises his hand to silence everyone. โ€œCaleb, how would Liam know about poison? Itโ€™s not something taught to children that young.โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œHeโ€™s never mentioned it before. Not even when fighting with his brother. I donโ€™t think Zoe and I have ever discussed it. Maybe we did without realizing he was listening, but it wasnโ€™t recent. If you havenโ€™t noticed, Alexander, weโ€™re not a family that goes on hunts or to war. We havenโ€™t even joined a pack run because we donโ€™t feel welcome among the Wolves.โ€
